The Mass Effect franchise's marketing has always heavily focused on male Shepard while promoting ME1, ME2 and so far, ME3. While I can't complain about how male Shepard looks (because he's pretty), I do think it's weird that EA and BioWare have chosen to focus on the wrong Shepard. It turns out I'm not the only person who identifies Commander Shepard as a female. BioWare's David Silverman confirmed via twitter that a female Shepard trailer was on the way. "...There will be a #FemShep trailer. We actually had a meeting on her yesterday. We are working on the look now."
Female Shepard has long been hailed as the better acted Shepard, mostly by me. The credit for that goes to Jennifer Hale and her amazing voice acting. Since many gamers, both male and female, prefer female Shepard, there was a demand to see more trailers that featured her. In true internet fashion, if you whine about it enough, they will change it.
I'm curious, how many G4 readers play with a female Shepard too?

Ok first off, I really Honestly don't get what the fascination is with guys playing Female characters. I've only ever played a hand full of games as a female, only because I absolutely have to. EG Castlevania Order of Ecclesia, Parasite Eve, and of course Metroid. When I play games I often times try to immerse myself in my character to take on a sense of what they feel, I have no desire to feel the world through a woman's eyes. That being said.
I thought Malesheps Voice Actor did a fine job. The model of the avatar I also did after myself and think it turned out a damn shade better than most of the uninspired male-shep models I've seen. Key word being Most.
Anyhow I can understand a female wanting to play a female char, I get it. However I've never seen so many guys clamor over FemShep. A few of the reasons I've read is due to "Steamy Same Sex" Scenes. WTF ?! Seriously ? C'mon guys if only play the ME games for the chance to watch some psudo-porn, save some time and go to an actual site for that sort of thing., the internet has millions of them.
If you want to play through an awesome game with a great story then keep them seperate.

compared to Hale Mark Meer is a joke.

I totally agree about the better acting part... The male Shepard is just so Drone like it seems harder to read his emotions...

OK, I'll admit it: I created a fem shep knowing you could have steamy blue alien lesbo sex with her in ME1. But having played both, I think I still prefer fem shep.

I have a male AND a female Shepard and the female is my main Shepard so this is good news. Can't wait for the 3rd game!

I've never played as femshep bit after reading this I may run through ME1 & 2 as a female. Hopefully there's some same sex relationship options tho lol

I too play FemSep, imported from ME1 to ME2, it took me about 5 or 6 hours to get my FemSep to look good, after playing for a while I noticed she looks like a young Alissa Milano go figure, now every time I see Alissa Milano I expect her to say "I should go"

I modeled my shep thru me but I also played as a femshep for a different experience and its more thrilling. FemShep has more of an edge. Everyone remember the renegade sequence when the blue suns recruiter thinks you're just another stripper?

I do, but as my second play-through usually. I've got the most amazing looking male shepard, (kinda like Kaim from Lost Odyssey, but more manly), so that bias plays a role >.<</safety_wrapper&g t;

Never played a the female and I love playing as females in games.
Just seemed like they made cannon Mass Effect about the male and I didn't want to be left out the loop.
Have I been missing out? Because the male shepard does have a lot of questionable delivery.

I'm a guy, and I prefer FemShep. I have my "main" playthrough as FemShep (Renegade when dealing with enemies, paragon when dealing with most allies/friends), and then a full paragon BroShep, and a full renegade FemShep. I have certainly found Hale to be a more convincing voice actior personally.

I played a Female Shepard in ME1, but I play a Male Shepard as my "official" version of the character to play through the trilogy. I don't have a preference between the two in terms of voice acting--I think both Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale are fantastic voice actors--but I play games like Mass Effect for the experience of putting myself in an adventure story. And since I'm a guy, part of that means picking a character of the same gender as me.
Nothing against folks playing characters of the opposite gender, it's just not the way I roll for the most part. :-)

What happened to the discussion thread? Why can't i see it?

Yep, I prefer femshep. In ME1, my first two characters were male, and then on the third and every game since then I went with female Shepard. And she's the one I've decided to carry through ME2 and ME3. Like another guy said earlier, the male voice actor seems to be pretty good with the important lines, but seems a bit inconsistent and unemotional when it comes to common dialogue situations, especially paragon choices as opposed to renegade. Where as I feel the female one seems to be spot on pretty much all the time. This is all from a male gamer perspective, but it's not like that matters much.

I guess I'll throw in my opinion. I think both Hale and Meer are awesome.
Meer to me sounds more believable as a career military officer, which Shepard is, regardless of background. However Hale does deliver more emotion in her performance. I prefer Maleshep, but to each their own.
I do hope, however, that they don't completely switch to femshep in the trailers; give both actors their screentime.

I've played both femshep and dudeshep, dudeshep's voice is so dull compared to Jennifer Hale's voice acting work as Femshep. This is the only game i actually prefer playing as a female character and btw, i'm a dude.
greeknerd
I am a man and I prefer my character to be a dude, but if you like Fem Shep then more power to ya.

I <3 playing FemShep, I am a girl and I enjoy controlling a bad ass female that can take down half the galaxy. Hale does a great job with the voice, my favorite is still her awkward "I...should go" conversation ender :) my friends and I have fun one liners to tack on to the conversation every time she uses it.

Am i the only one who doesn't care :P

I'm female and basically always play a FemShep, though I have one male that I've played through both games. 20% of playthroughs being female is already a very large percentage where sales are concerned, but since 40% of gamers are female according to the ESA, ME3 can do better. So glad the marketing will be what it should be, at last!
I enjoyed Mark Meer, but his performance was inconsistent to me. He nails the big lines, but neglects the smaller ones. IMO Jennifer Hale puts a bit more gumption into her performance--all of it. I feel Shepard is a more unique and original character as a female, because every action hero in movies and games these days is--well, a hero and not a heroine! FemShep is a nice change.
Despite how some people talk, I don't think most male gamers are so petty that they can't stand Femshep at last having her day in the sun, like some people hated Rosa Parks for at last not sitting at the back of the bus. I think that's just a sad, juvenile minority. I think most of us are stoked, because exposure for FemShep is exposure for roleplaying--for the fact that ME is not just another shooter. It's an awesome, awesome hybrid that plays like a serious science fiction action thriller. That you get to choose what Shepard looks like, blond or red-haired or black-haired, pale or medium or dark, male or female, background, personality, class, all of it--it's part of the brilliance of the series.
Choice in Mass Effect is a major part of the awesome, and everyone should take advantage of it no matter which kind of Shepard they prefer.
