Minecraft Sells 500K Copies, Now Has 1.6 Million Users

Updated: 12:47PM PST: In a tweet, LulzSec has promised to "lay off" Minecraft while preparing for a new target. Another tweet, posted a few minutes later, names that target as League of Legend's login servers.

Minecraft, EVE Online and the Escapist Magazine servers were targeted by hacker group Lulz Security as part of their #TitanicTakeoverTuesday, the group announced via their Twitter account.

While we've been able to play Minecraft single-player in browser, the multiplayer servers cannot be accessed. This was done purposefully, the hacker group claims. No official announcements from anyone on the Minecraft teams.

EVE Online is meanwhile completely down, having shut the network off themselves to investigate the attack which LulzSec is claiming responsibility for. The CCP Games' massively multiplayer space sim announced their breach via Twitter and Facebook.

The Escapist's website likewise cannot be accessed at all, though they're mum on why. No updates on their social media sites.

Isn't Minecraft a free-to-play beta game from an indie dev team? Exactly how bored are hackers of this gen??? >_>

This hack seems completely undeserved. What did these companies do to bring this on? I was on the fence on how I felt about the PSN hacking, since Sony brought it on themselves with the over-the-top reaction to the Geohot PS3 jailbreak, but Minecraft, EVE, LoL, and Escapist didn't do anything wrong, as far as I know.

This isn't cool. People enjoy eveonline, minecraft and I personally am a member of the Escapist. None of which seem like places that deserve what was done to them.

Note: This was a DDOS strike, not a HACKING attempt. Hacking means they're going through and accessing stuff from the site itself, rather than just overloading the servers with a multitude of hits (which this was). Article needs to be renamed.

I just wanna know how many people that commented, actually play the games that have been hacked? If you have than your opinion means nothing because 3/4 of the human race is incapable of making an unbiased statement.

Sucks to be you If you're hacked, but the truth is that companies definately aren't doing all they can to protect the information we give them. The road goes both ways, the companies wouldn't get hacked if their security was as good as it should be, and there would be no need for people to hack for the same reason/. So quit your pissing and moaning and get over it because I'm tired of people calling the hackers "terrorists and vandalists" when you refuse to see both sides of the story. I'm not sympathizing with the hackers or bashing on the companies, I'm just trying to make people realize that what they're doing is only as bad as the hacked companie's lack of regard for our information's safety.

Yay! Hackers! Thank you SO MUCH for doing little more than making our lives miserable. After all, we've created such havok for you by minding our own business by playing out games. We've harmed you greatly, and you need to teach us a lesson for what we've done. We'll never be able to make up for not doing anything to you, and we deserve do have our fun ruined by you.

So again, thank you. We need you to cause problems for us when we cause none for you. Stick with your misguided views of life, and never stop making people unhappy just because you're mad at a company.

What happened to my post? haha well...

Ya know instead of just attacking... Why couldn't LulzSec just contact the companies, tell them what they think about the security of their networks, give a harmless example, and accept whether the companies accept it or not. It'd wouldn't have caused such an inconvenience to others. I don't know man, this is just a thought I guess.

Oh and why don't they just start up their own security thing for networks. Sounds like a good idea to me.. Ah, I don't know anything about them but once again, it's just a thought I have...

Couldn't they just like... Contact the companies and inform them to be more secure with their networks or something like that? Instead of just attacking. I mean, telling them what they think about how the security should be and what to watch out for and what not, giving them a harmless example of possible attacks and just accept whether or not the companies will accept what they say or not? I don't know. just my thought ya know. It'd be less of an inconvenience to others too.

Oh, and why doesn't LulzSec just make their own security thing for computers or something. Just another thought. P=

It's vandalism pure and simple. The excuses are BS and I seriously hope they find these idiots and file charges.

Those who claim they are helping are delusional. They are on the same pedestal as terrorists. There is no excuse for them releasing info of million of innocent customers, FBI agents, or police officers, potentially ruining mullions of lives over fraud or theft. There is no excuse for them hacking PBS just because they disagreed with their opinion on a documentary. There is no excuse for them to attack a small indy developer. There is no excuse for them to attack random game developers.

The internet is not a secure place, we already know this! I bet G4 could get hacked just as easily! You know why I still use it, because all of my info has been stolen 10 times over by now! Besides my credit card number, there is literally nothing left for them to protect. Saying they are doing this to protect us by showing security flaws is madness. I could show security flaws in every school in the United States, that does not make it right to start burning down schools to make a point.

League of Legends too... at least they are back up now. If I find you I shall smite you with an entirely delicious fattening meal to attack your arteries.

This is just effing ridiculous. I`m sure that soon, everyone affiliated with lulzsec will get a life sentence, and sued for millions by each company.
