Battlefield 3

Battlefield 3 has been under heavy fire from some gamers lately due to the announcement of the Physical Warfare DLC pre-order bonus. Physical Warfare is being given to people who buy from certain retailers in the UK, and today DICE, Battlefield 3's developer, has responded to the controversy. Before we get to that, let me explain what happened. Day 0 DLC is nothing new, Dragon Age 2 had it, L.A. Noire had it, but when it was announced that one of the year's most anticipated first-person shooters was going to offer launch-day DLC, the internet got very angry. Many thought the DLC would give certain players advantages over others, and in a competitive game that's not okay.

A Reddit campaign was organized to boycott Battlefield 3 and the entire thread was filled with animosity towards the DLC. But what exactly was in the pack that made everyone go bonkers? Well, The Physical Warfare DLC will include an exclusive light machine gun, an early unlocked shotgun, and, depending where you pre-ordered the game, you'll either get a flash suppressor weapon mod or flechette ammo for the aforementioned shotgun to add an extra punch. Gamers seem most angry about the flash suppressor. It's the only one that's going to be available in the game for the SKS sniper rifle, and it reduces enemy awareness of your position, allowing snipers to stay stealthy. Keep in mind, all of this DLC has only been announced for the UK now but more retailers will be added to the list soon, according to DICE.

The Back to Karkand expansion pack is still confirmed as a pre-order bonus for all Battlefield 3 orders regardless of where you buy the game from. It will include some of the best maps from Battlefield 3 including Strike at Karkand, Gulf of Oman, Wake Island, and the Sharqi Peninsula maps.

After everyone on the internet went crazy, DICE responded with a brief FAQ, saying, "Owning these items will give you a more varied arsenal, but it will not give you a significant advantage on the battlefield." A similar campaign featuring exclusive for-pay items was offered by EA for Battlefield: Bad Company and the internet raised their pitchforks then too. EA eventually backed down and ceased the idea, but the FAQ leads me to believe that they're sticking to the items in the Physical Warfare Pack this time around.

Here's the full FAQ regarding the Physical Warfare Pack:

Q: Is the Physical Warfare Pack available in all regions, or just in the UK?
A: It will be available worldwide at select retailers. It was first announced in the UK. Exact details for other countries and retailers will be announced at a later date.

Q: Will Physical Warfare Pack imbalance the game?
A: The three exclusive items in the Physical Warfare Pack were specifically chosen not to be overpowered or imbalance or break the game in any way.

Q: Why do I want the Physical Warfare Pack?
A: Owning these items will give you a more varied arsenal, but it will not give you a significant advantage on the battlefield.

Q: Is the Back to Karkand expansion pack exclusive to pre-orders?
A: No. You can also buy it separately if you do not pre-order Battlefield 3. Back to Karkand will be available the exact same date after the launch of Battlefield 3 no matter if you pre-ordered or buy it separately.

Q: When will the Back to Karkand expansion pack be released?
A: We have not yet announced the Back to Karkand expansion pack release date.

Q: How much does the Back to Karkand Expansion pack cost?
A: We have not yet announced a price. However, it will be included in the Limited Edition at no extra charge.

Q: Do I have to choose between Back to Karkand and the Physical Warfare Pack as my pre-order bonus?
A: No. There is no way you can pre-order Battlefield 3: Limited Edition and not end up with the Back to Karkand expansion pack at no extra charge. On top of this, select retailers all over the world will carry the Physical Warfare Pack. Exact details for other countries and retailers will be announced at a later date.

Q: Why do you offer pre-order bonus items?
A: Because we believe in rewarding our core fanbase with special offers -- such as giving them the Back to Karkand expansion pack at no extra charge.

And there you have it. What's your take on Day 0 DLC and the fact that Battlefield 3 is going to have it? Will it turn you off the shooter if you have to choose one perk over the other when you pre-order it? What do you think of the whole controversy? Let me know below.

Battlefield 3 is coming out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 25.
