The Wii U from Nintendo might only support one controller per console at launch, according to Shigeru Miyamoto in an interview with Australian magazine Switched On. While Nintendo is currently researching what to do about "if someone brings their controller to their friends house and they want to play together on Wii U," as Miyamoto put it, the current direction seems to be towards using a Nintendo 3DS as substitution for another Wii U controller.
"...it might be just more convenient for people to use their Nintendo 3DS and have a way to connect that," Miyamoto said.
What this makes me wonder - and worry, if just a little - is the Wii U cost of both console and controller. It may be more convenient from a technology perspective to utilize already-existing hardware like the 3DS, but unless the Wii U controller is triple-figure priced, it can't be more convenient from a consumer perspective to pick up a $250 piece of hardware if all they want is a second controller for their home console.
When it comes to the Wii U, what we know is still minimal compared to what we could know. As Nintendo continues to release information, research and specs about the system we'll keep you updated. But in the meantime, why don't you tell us what you think of this latest detail?

i think they are saying you can only use one wii u controller per system. not that you can't play multiplayer. for that i think you just use a wii mote.
MasterKiller64
You people do know you can still use all of the wii's controllers like the classic controller right? Remember the demos, with 1 WiiU controller and 4 other Wii controllers.
LOZ4EVAH
Yeah uh you can still use the classic sontroller to play I guess......so that's at least comforting BUT I wanna way to plug it in the CONSOLE not in the Wiimote

I'm sure all this just implies that the 3DS would be the CHEAPER option to purchasing another wii U controller; sad

So...Nintendo's Gameboy Advance/Gamecube connection was the inspiration for their next console? They do realize how abysmally horrible that failed?
Duckhunt89
What the hell? How are they going to make a Smash Bros. game if you can only use one controller per console? WTF Nintendo!?

Uh oh! I know I can't stand multiplayer but I don't mind playing with someon in my house or with my wife....u mean to tell me I have to buy a 3ds as a second controller? Wuts the point. That makes zero sense and wut a way to sell the 3ds... sham nintendo.... shame.... FIX THIS!!!

Aren't you going to be able to play the new Wii U games using the existing Wii Remote and Nunchuck. From what I understand is that you will only be able to use 1 Wii U controller but you can still use the Wii Remote and Nunchuck to play the same game, its just the experience will be different. I think that is their intention. That if you are playing couch multiplayer that the person using the Wii U controller is experiencing the game differently then the ones using the wiimotes. Which if done correctly would make for some interesting gaming experiences.
I don't think it was a fail, as they gave us a concept and now our brains are buzzing to find out the answers and will keep wanting to find the answers (i.e. the product buzz effect). You only show a little bit as time goes on.
I do believe that this console will not be ready for next year. I would say it will be ready for reveal early 2013, around the time the 3DS was launched. Unless they have alot to show at E3 2012. And if they do they better have some excellent 1st party support. I better see a new Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Super Smash Bros, Pokemon, Kid Icarus, F-Zero and so on (any few of those as launch titles would be good).

How can you make a console with just support of one controller?? It's one thing to have the console only come with one controller included, but even that is something I've always been against. That's the whole point of gaming is to incorporate everyone in the experience. I really hope this will change as time draws closer to its release, but if it not, then they will lose a ton of consumers.

Based on this, Nintendo may not truly have a next gen console that could play games to their fullest capacity when it launches. I'd say it's almost better for them to get it right from the beginning rather than releasing and fixing.

I think it's hilariously arrogant of Nintendo to think that just because you have a WiiU you would also have a 3DS to use as an extra controller, something not even my kids think is a "must have" console and are perfectly happy with their DSs. The WiiU is kind of looking like a disaster but, you are right, the details are pretty scant right now on this thing.
