At its E3 2011 press conference moments ago, Nintendo revealed the name of it's next home console. The device will be called the Nintendo Wii U. It will be available "next year."
According to Nintendo head Saturo Iwata, the idea of the new console is to make a game platform that is equally satisfying to both hardcore and casual players. Iwata boiled it down to two words: "Deeper and Wider."
Nintendo also revealed the Wii U's new controller, with built in screen, which seems like the system's most innovative feature. It's backwards compatible, and compatible with other Nintendo devices like the Balance Board. Contains a touch-screen, microphone, gyroscope, and backwards facing camera.
The Wii U controller features a 6.2-inch HD screen, the new controller also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers These features are in addition to the Classic Controller button scheme – two analog Circle Pads, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons.
Nintendo says the innovative controller will "enable a breadth of game-play experiences while appealing to both casual and dedicated video game players." Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus controllers.
"It was not designed to be a portable video game system," according to Iwata. "The images on the controller are generated by WiiU and transmitted wirelessly," Iwata explains. Although WiiU can be used without a TV, with the monitor built into the controller.
"It's a new structure for home entertainment," Iwata said.
Check out the Wii U and it's controller below:

Oh, but that's not all. In fact, if you'd like the official details straight from the horse's mouth, simply read below for the Nintendo E3 2011 press release in its entirety, including tech specifications, more controller details, and games not announced during the conference:
At the E3 Expo, Nintendo introduced a new paradigm for video games and home entertainment: Wii U™, a new console that includes a controller with a 6.2-inch screen. Adding a second screen to the living room creates a multitude of new video game experiences while offering families a variety of options to customize their entertainment.
Previously, video games played on a home console have been confined to the TV and offered identical viewpoints to each player in a multiplayer environment. Furthermore, watching TV and playing console games have been completely separate experiences. The new controller removes these boundaries, creating a more dynamic and fluid gaming and entertainment experience. Visitors to the E3 Expo will see firsthand the type of gaming experiences made possible by Wii U and the new controller such as:
In single-player games:
- The new controller can display information on its screen that does not appear on the TV.
-
The information and viewpoint can also change in the new controller based on the orientation of its gyroscope.
In multiplayer games:
-
The player using the new controller can have a different experience than those looking at the TV. This will offer a wide variety of competitive and cooperative opportunities.
In addition to the 6.2-inch screen, the new controller also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers. Adding these features to the Classic Controller™ button scheme – two analog Circle Pads, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons – will enable a breadth of game-play experiences while appealing to both casual and dedicated video game players.
Wii U combines motion-sensing game play with the ability to support full HD graphics. Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote™ or Wii Remote Plus controllers. The system is also backward compatible and can play all Wii games and use all Wii accessories. The Wii console has sold more than 86 million units globally and greatly expanded the overall audience for video games. Wii U aims to expand that audience even further. Developers worldwide are already working on new games and experiences for the console.
“Wii U redefines the structure of home entertainment by fundamentally changing how the TV, the game console and the Internet function and interact together,” said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. “The experience enabled by Wii U and the new controller takes players deeper into their games, while reaching out wider than ever before to be inviting to all kinds of gamers.”
Nintendo 3DS™, which lets users see 3D images without the need for special glasses, launched in the United States on March 27 and continues to evolve. Owners will find that their Nintendo 3DS experience is different every time they pick up the system, thanks to new content and updates delivered by Nintendo, by third parties and exchanged between users.

Just to clear it up for those of you it is a console the console hooks up to your TV just like any other but it wirelessly connects to the controller to show you the screen(like remote play on the PSP/PS3) This was really disappointing to me because it is like the Wii! It is going to be a fad because the thing their are pushing is you don't need your TV but for the games that are truly innovative (the ones that use your TV and the remote in conjunction) you can't play using only the controller for obvious reasons. Those games are cool but they will fade because their is only so much fun you can have flinging your finger forward towards your TV to throw things. It's motion control. Plus playing on the controller, this will be do-able anywhere (mostlikely) on the NGP using 3G with remote play just like the PSP. No go for me It's a fad it will do good at the beginning but it will fade.(So far I'm 2/2 in predicting the sales perfecly for new peripherals. IE... The move and Kinect)
The cool thing for me is the new Zapper because as someone who actually hunts and owns and uses weapons. I always want to aim like an actual gun when using the zapper but you can't! But with the Wii U you actually can with that new screen.Overall I am not impressed with the Wii U. P.S. The controller looks a little unwieldy.

i was expected for "the wii hd" something else! but is look like another accessory for the nintendo wii.
Draconian
Nintendo to the unsuspecting world, -
"HEY GUYS REMEMBER WHEN THE GAMECUBE THAT HAD THREE GAMES THAT WORKED WITH THE GBA? WELL!!! EEEEEE!!!! we made a controller that is just like that...ALSO YOU GET A FREE NEW CONSOLE WITH PURCHASE OF THIS NEW CONTROLLER!!!!!!"
sonicwind510
That's wut it is? A controller? Why would I, as a hardcore gamer go from a 50 inch hdtv to a 6 inch? The wii u is hd but it's 6 inches! Nintendo will get 3rd party company games but they will be diluted. Would u buy assassins creed on the wii or ps3? And no trophies. U know wut? The whole e3 was garbage (other than zelda ) NOTHING was interesting and no surprising news. Oh luigi's mansion 2. Yipee! Smdh. Better luck next year everyone. I am looking forward to tokyo game show. I'm sure it won't b a let down.

Do some research before ignorantly commenting on these news posts.
There is a NEW console called Wii U. The current Wii is no where capable of playing HD graphics seen in the demo's and the tech demo they played.

The NEW CONSOLE will also use existing peripherals like the Wii Remote / Balance Board.

WTF nintendo, all the hype about how powerful the console is going to be and this is what you show. I need a drink.

the controller looks fine. No one complains about Ipads and tablets being uncomfortable. The only difference is your hands will be spread a little further apart. Big whoop. The system is packing more power than anything out there (not counting PC), great first party games, and an impressive amount of third party support (Batman:Arkham City, Assasin's Creed). Nintendo is not only keeping their players but trying for new ones. Open your mind's people. X-Box 360 controllers are uncomfortable, but fans got used to it. The Wiimote was weird at first, but now even PS3 has motion controls. 2 screens on a handheld seemed crazy, but the DS is the best selling system ever. The system looks great, I am open minded toward the controller, and can't wait to trade my Wii towards this. In a few year's no one will even think twice about the size of the controller. Nintendo always makes great games.

What a joke... SO nintendo's new console is an inventory screen lol, really appealing to the hardcore nintendo...

This is not a console. They called it a controller.
High_Lord_Knightmare
Alright you all. It is a new console. You can see it in the video. They just highlighted on the controller because to see another HD console will not be too exciting. The system itself is called the WiiU, and that tablet is just THE CONTROLLER!!!
redheadREDEMPTION
I wouldn't really call this a console. Its more of a new controller than anything.
helrazor343
That looks interesting, well what can I say I guess I'm a fan of Nintendo, as it stands I see more than just potential, and that's just from what they've shown (I'm really excited for the implications it has for customization), just tell me the cost so I can decide.

Corporate kamikaze.
Such a shame!!
KillerWhiteNova
It looks like the Sega Game Gear knocked up a Wii remote and the Wii remote attempted a self abortion with a cloths hanger and failed thus birthing the bulky and retarded looking Wii U!
testerjs
Im pretty sure that the controller is part of the new console. The Zelda game they were showing didnt look like a Wii game. But then again, they didnt mention it as more than a controller. I hope it was more than a controller.....
Crash486
It appears to be a physical console with a touchscreen controller. You can see pictures of the console itself on IGN and Kotaku. Probably the most confusing reveal in the history of e3.

WOW! G4 the land of the fanboys. Look Microsoft and Sony don't care about you. It's okay to be intrigued by a new console. They won't care. They already have your money. It has HD graphics a new interesting folder. You can browse the internet with it. You can continue to play a game on the controller while your mommy and daddy hog the tv. Now how well this all works remains to be seen. But to be not at least interested means that you are a little fanboy and I feel sorry for you. By the way I only own a 360.
