Wii U: Nintendo's New Console;

At its E3 2011 press conference moments ago, Nintendo revealed the name of it's next home console. The device will be called the Nintendo Wii U. It will be available "next year."

According to Nintendo head Saturo Iwata, the idea of the new console is to make a game platform that is equally satisfying to both hardcore and casual players. Iwata boiled it down to two words: "Deeper and Wider."

Nintendo also revealed the Wii U's new controller, with built in screen, which seems like the system's most innovative feature. It's backwards compatible, and compatible with other Nintendo devices like the Balance Board. Contains a touch-screen, microphone, gyroscope, and backwards facing camera.

The Wii U controller features a 6.2-inch HD screen, the new controller also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers These features are in addition to the Classic Controller button scheme – two analog Circle Pads, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons.

Nintendo says the innovative controller will "enable a breadth of game-play experiences while appealing to both casual and dedicated video game players."  Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus controllers.

"It was not designed to be a portable video game system," according to Iwata. "The images on the controller are generated by WiiU and transmitted wirelessly," Iwata explains. Although WiiU can be used without a TV, with the monitor built into the controller.

"It's a new structure for home entertainment," Iwata said.

Check out the Wii U and it's controller below:

Wii U: Nintendo's New Console;

Oh, but that's not all. In fact, if you'd like the official details straight from the horse's mouth, simply read below for the Nintendo E3 2011 press release in its entirety, including tech specifications, more controller details, and games not announced during the conference:

At the E3 Expo, Nintendo introduced a new paradigm for video games and home entertainment: Wii U™, a new console that includes a controller with a 6.2-inch screen. Adding a second screen to the living room creates a multitude of new video game experiences while offering families a variety of options to customize their entertainment.

Previously, video games played on a home console have been confined to the TV and offered identical viewpoints to each player in a multiplayer environment. Furthermore, watching TV and playing console games have been completely separate experiences. The new controller removes these boundaries, creating a more dynamic and fluid gaming and entertainment experience. Visitors to the E3 Expo will see firsthand the type of gaming experiences made possible by Wii U and the new controller such as:

In single-player games:

  • The new controller can display information on its screen that does not appear on the TV.
  • The information and viewpoint can also change in the new controller based on the orientation of its gyroscope.

In multiplayer games:

  • The player using the new controller can have a different experience than those looking at the TV. This will offer a wide variety of competitive and cooperative opportunities.

In addition to the 6.2-inch screen, the new controller also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers. Adding these features to the Classic Controller™ button scheme – two analog Circle Pads, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons – will enable a breadth of game-play experiences while appealing to both casual and dedicated video game players.

Wii U combines motion-sensing game play with the ability to support full HD graphics. Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote™ or Wii Remote Plus controllers. The system is also backward compatible and can play all Wii games and use all Wii accessories. The Wii console has sold more than 86 million units globally and greatly expanded the overall audience for video games. Wii U aims to expand that audience even further. Developers worldwide are already working on new games and experiences for the console.

Wii U redefines the structure of home entertainment by fundamentally changing how the TV, the game console and the Internet function and interact together,” said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. “The experience enabled by Wii U and the new controller takes players deeper into their games, while reaching out wider than ever before to be inviting to all kinds of gamers.”

Nintendo 3DS™, which lets users see 3D images without the need for special glasses, launched in the United States on March 27 and continues to evolve. Owners will find that their Nintendo 3DS experience is different every time they pick up the system, thanks to new content and updates delivered by Nintendo, by third parties and exchanged between users.

A new system update is now available for the Nintendo 3DS system. Users who connect to a wireless broadband Internet connection and install the system update will instantly gain access to the Nintendo eShop, which contains a variety of games and applications for download using a cash-based system.

Users can browse original 3D software, 3D Classics (select classic video games re-mastered in 3D), classic Game Boy™ and Game Boy Color games, and more than 350 games and applications currently offered for the Nintendo DSiWare™ service. Visitors can also see videos and screen shots for games, plus see how other players rank games.

The system update also provides Nintendo 3DS owners access to free items, including an Internet browser that can show 3D images on sites specifically designed to show 3D images, a download of a re-mastered 3D version of the NES™ classic Excitebike™ game (free until July 7) and Pokédex™ 3D, which lets users discover and view more than 150 Pokémon™ from the Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version games in visually engaging 3D.

Nintendo also announced a huge lineup of upcoming new and fan-favorite franchise games, many of which are playable on the E3 Expo show floor in booth 4922.

  • Nintendo 3DS: Super Mario™, Luigi’s Mansion™ 2, Mario Kart™, Kid Icarus™: Uprising, The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, Star Fox 64™ 3D, Animal Crossing™, Paper Mario™, Picture Lives!, The Rolling Western™.

  • Nintendo DS™: Kirby™ Mass Attack, Professor Layton and the Last Specter™, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker™ 2 and Super Fossil Fighters™.

Nintendo kicked off its E3 Expo Presentation by announcing a number of initiatives to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda. A re-mastered 3D version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches for Nintendo 3DS on June 19, while Wii owners will see the arrival of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in the 2011 holiday season. Additionally, Nintendo announced a tour of orchestral concerts featuring music from the beloved franchise. Additional commemorative activities will be announced at a later date.

For the duration of the E3 Expo, Nintendo will provide fans with exclusive videos and Nintendo content on the Nintendo Network. People can visit http://e3.nintendo.com to watch developer interviews, get all the information about new games and see coverage coming directly from the show floor. The same exclusive content also will be streamed through the Nintendo® Channel to Wii owners who have a broadband Internet connection.

I know that everyone is focused on the controller, but did they talk about the on-line experience? Has it changed from the very minimal Wii experience?

Long time Nintendo buff (obviously). Was really hoping for a 'non-gimmick' powerhouse system this year. When I heard the name 'Wii U' I thought "Here we go again..." However, after seeing some of the possible applications, my opinion slightly changed. It is refreshing to see that Nintendo is finally gaining some third-party support. Like the Wii, the potential is there; how developers will utilize the technology is really what will define the fate of the Wii U. Here's hoping...

I had to weed through the confusion so I'll try to explain

Wii U (seriously hate the console name) is an actual console. It is visible in quite a few of the videos that Nintendo showed but it looks so much like a Wii (slightly updated) that it's easily overlooked since the focus was on the controller. The messed up thing is that the Wii U is backwards compatible with everything Wii. In essence the Wii is worthless (or will become worthless) since Wii U is basically what everyone thought "Wii HD." Motion control won't die since it was such a huge selling point for the Wii so "WiitabletU" (funny cause that's what it looks like) follows suit with motion control.

This console has potential, just like the Wii did when it first released. The biggest issues that were not explained are console price point (we'll know next year more than likely), the tablet controller price (anything above $65 would have a massively negative impact for the console) and if third party developers will actually utilize the screen in an effective mannor (no menu only or map only display). The controller itself needs to be powerful and capable of delivering HD as well

I don't get it. I mean yes I missed the conference but so far all I've seen is pictures of the controller.

What's the console look like? I can't find anything other then this WiiU Controller which makes me think that the WiiU is just that... a Wii with an extra letter to sell a handheld system since that's the only thing keeping Nintendo afloat right now.

Was everyone here facepalming so hard from "You can play New Super Mario Bros with your Mii!" that they missed the part where they showed Assassin's Creed and Ninja Gaiden? That's what people wanted, right? Mature games with modern graphics?
If Nintendo can get some good exclusives then they are back in the hardcore market.

To start off, I'll say that I'm intrigued with the direction that Nintendo is heading with their WiiU. 6.2" touch screen in the middle of the controller, two analog sticks, a normal amount of buttons, a camera, and a few other pieces of tech. Lots of impressive claims were made about the WiiU, the fact that you don't need a TV and there is no lag between the system and the controller when a TV isn't used. Third party developers are excited about the possibilities and promised new games for the WiiU

Unfortunately, the same kind of promises could have been said about the Wii when it came out. Third party developers where excited about motion controls. However nothing ever came of it. Nintendo was really the only developer for the Wii. Nintendo also failed to integrate a few key components like HD support and a proper game controller. Instead Nintendo seemed to force developers to use motion controls. Thus they severely maimed their own brand in my opinion.

My other worries about the WiiU are this: no specs for a brand new system where announced, lag between controller screen/TV/system, price, and actual game play. All 4 of these send up red flags about a system to me. I would like to know how it compares to a PS3 and Xbox360 in computing power. Does it only do 720p and not full HD? There are just simple specs that should be released when you announce a new system.

Lastly until I see actual game play and not something that is pre-rendered I will remain skeptical at best.

Its not just a controller , it a new system they were just focusing on the controller for its unique capabilities. I'm personally excited about it , seeing as it will be able to handle games like Arkham city.

I'll explain cause I was confused like everyone else:

Wii U is a console, it was visible in quite a few of the videos that they showed. It looks undeniably like a updated Wii which is a bit of a letdown and the main reason why the conference got so freaking confusing. The system is backwards compatible with the Wii so if you haven't gotten a Wii yet don't bother just wait for the Wii U. The controller is massive but provides a "home portable" device which is interesting if the controller can display HD graphics, and developers don't do dump stuff like menu's and other unnecessary crap like they have done on the DS.

Longtime Nintendo buff (obviously). Had high hopes of a 'non-gimmick' powerhouse system this year... When I heard the 'Wii U' name, I thought 'Damnit... here we go again.' However, after seeing a few of the application possibilities and the fact that Nintendo is finally gaining some third-party support, my opinion was slightly altered. As with the wii, the possibilities are there; how developers will utilize it will remain to be seen.

your just seeing the controler dont get confused there is a new console and it will be able to do everything and more as the 360

I really don't understand the confusion. You could see the console in the videos and if that wasn't enough just a little bit of thought would make it clear it's a console; the wii doesn't do HD.
