We got to check out Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary last night at Microsoft's "Best of E3" Showcase event, and we learned a lot more details about the game. First and foremost: Halo: Combat Evolved is a very awkward name. Halo: Combat Evolved HD wouldn't have been that bad. But name issues aside, the game actually looks very impressive. Everything from weapon effects to orchestral music (the team spent a lot of time at Skywalker Sound tweaking the audio) has been improved.
Most telling is the "Classic Mode" that they put into the game. At the touch of a button, you can flip from the uprezzed version to what Halo: Combat Evolved originally looked like on the original Xbox. That was originally going to be a menu item, but it is so visually arresting that the team decided to make it more immediate. We were dropped in to the opening moments of the game, and when they changed it to the original graphics, it's shocking to see how different the game looks. The water effects alone will blow you away. You'll be thinking "Whoa. Halo looked terrible."
But Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary looks very impressive. Read on for more details, and a list of the things you may not know.
The game is actually running two engines simultaneously. The classic engine runs to make the game play the exact same way that it did in the original Halo, and then they're running a graphical engine on top of that to provide the uprezzed visuals. 343 Industries worked with Austin-based Certain Affinity (and creators of the newly announced Crimson Alliance) helped build the new version of the game, while Saber Interactive is working on the multiplayer, which is actually running using the Halo: Reach engine.

What that means is that you're going to get extremely upgraded maps in the multiplayer (Damnation alone seriously looked off the charts impressive over the original map), and abilities like jetpacks and armor lock as well. That's something that wasn't even present in the original, and you'll be glad you have those jetboosts to help you get around.
Terminals are making a comeback and being retrofitted into Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Except you won't be reading text on them like you did in Halo 3. Instead, you'll be watching full-motion video narrated by Guilty Spark. It will fill out the story of the Halo universe, and hopefully lead us into Halo 4.
- The game is disc-based, although 343 is "exploring other distributuon options."
- The game will retail for $39.99.
- Halo Waypoint will be integrated with Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and there will be some secrets revealed there.
- When asked about the possibility of the same treatment for Halo 2, a 343 spokesman said "That's a good question... which I will be evasive on! Right now we're really excited to be talking about Halo: Combat Evolved."
- The game will "ship with seven maps," including one Firefight map, but you can probably expect more via DLC.
- The extremely overpowered Magnum pistol is making a triumphant return.
- There are more secrets yet to come, and those will be revealed over the next few months, including at 343's "Halo Fest" in Seattle, which runs during PAX East.

I hope Halo 4 brings more to Halo than Halo:Reach did, Reach was more an expansion pack, with a few Halo 1 things thrown in.

Am I reading this right? Halo: CE Anniversary will have ONLINE multiplayer? If so i dont understand why people are complaining about them using the Reach engine. it actually adds something new to the online mulitiplayer experience while still giving options for more classic matchmaking game types. remember halo: ce for the xbox didnt have online multiplayer. this seems like a great idea (the re release) and cant wait for it to launch
Gryphon12
hope they remake all the games better

I don't know...a remastered combat evolved sounds great, but the game being remade using Reach is a real turn off. Reach was complete and utter tripe (and this is coming from a long time halo fan) and I don't like the idea of paying for the exact same game just with a different story.

SWEET!!!Halo is my favorite gaming franchise EVER. And i was bummed out when Bungie left...but i have faith in 343i and hopefully they do a good job with Halo 4(not entirely sold on that concept),but will definately buy Halo:Remastered(as i like to call it)!!! Awww...brings back memories =)

Gonna try to answer some of your questions.
The IP Halo is owned by Microsoft. Halo development was underway even before MS bought Bungie. I believe that Bungie was working on the Marathon games, which are similar to Halo. When MS and Bungie split several years ago, the IP Halo was left with MS and Bungie got their freedom from MS.
This separation is what allowed Bungie to start looking at other game development possibilities, which led to the Activision deal. But Bungie still had a contractual obligation to create more Halo games for MS which were ODST & Reach.
I think I have this right, please correct me otherwise.
343 Industries are developing Halo 4. But where is Ensemble Studios who developed Halo Wars? Or did Ensemble become 343?

Re-mastering CE will be good practice for 343 studios. I would believe that's why they're doing this project in preparation for Halo 4. Granted some people who made the Halo's came from Bungie itself the company as a whole is new at working on a AAA grade game.

I was a BIG Halo fan but my interest has waned in the last few years (has it really been THAT long since Halo 1 came out?), but I am actually excited about the original Halo being available again. I kinda brings back the old magic but in HD!
I hope everyone realizes that with developers now getting a handle on the consoles true potentials (running two engines on top of each other for instance), it is now time for a NEW 'next gen' PS and XBOX right? Start saving you money because the are only a year or two away.

I might've gotten this had they actually set the campaign to the reach engine and the multiplayer to the original engine. Now whenever I see the game I'll be thinking "wow, they had the potential to make it look so much better". I feel like they should wait and release halo 2 HD with this for $40. Only way it'd be worth it to anyone who isn't a giant fan of the series
AngelsandDemons
why the hell would I want to see the original graphics?...that's the amazing feature the author chose to highlight...my ballz
