Microsoft TV Service To Be Announced at E3?

Xbox 360

We've been hearing various reports and speculation regarding Microsoft offering television programming since way back in 2007, but today a new rumor has hit the 'net that suggests that one of Microsoft's big E3 2011 announcements will be an IPTV service that will basically turn your 360 into a cable box.

If Winrumors' sources are to be believed, a new subscription level, "Diamond," combines Xbox Live with Kinect-controlled IPTV watching and music services to create what would be a pretty rad media suite. It fits in perfectly with M'Soft's long term plan of taking over the world through gamers' entertainment centers.

According to the rumor, Microsoft would love to show off its new joint at its pre-E3 media event on Monday morning (9:30 AM PST), but may not be able to; there are reportedly last minute, frantic negotiations going on to secure the necessary rights for the demonstration.

If you want to be the first to find out whether or not this rumor is true, point your browser to G4's E3 site, where we'll be live-streaming the Microsoft press conference.

I'm already paying close to $2500.00 a year for cable and internet through comcast. If Xbox can offer a cable service that rivals that of comcast, I'll be all in. But I can't help but wonder what that would do with issues of overheating of consoles due to a new highly excessive use of you 360. Because your console isn't on all day, but when you include cable viewing in with gaming use, then that will definitely be an issues for any console. I hope Microsoft has looked into that as a factor if this rumor is indeeed true.

with bandwidth caps from the ISPs how is IPTV supposed to be viable anymore? I'd cut my tv company off today, regardless of what new thing MS has, if it weren't for the fact that I'd totally bust my 150gb/mo cap. I'd love to have my 360 be my box-to-rule-my-tv, but if MS doesn't strong arm at&t and comcast to get rid of the caps it can't play. and I sure as hell wouldn't pay for "diamond" level anything if my ISP is gonna prevent me from using it the second half of every month

This is cool, but I would much rather have a Youtube channel or the ability to IM people on facebook. Or better yet, a web browser.

I hope Microsoft does offer a cable internet service through Xbox. That would be so cool. I don't care for Comcast customer service too much because they don't care too much for me.

If they can offer cable TV at a cheaper rate than Comcast, Dish Network, and/or DirecTV this could work in their favor. I'd pay extra for a Diamond membership if it meant saving a few bucks each month.

Using a machine that has been know to overheat for more hours than we already are is probably a bad idea. Does it come with the red ring channel?

g4tv (channel) is not even about gaming 90% of time you tune in, only game shows they got is xplay and attack of the show is kool, but they seriously need to stop playing god damn cops on all the time, g4 site way better then their channel so xbox tv thing offering g4 ain't a huge attraction. G4 please have more gaming shows on channel.

Yep- they've been using 360s as Cable boxes for over a year now in Canada- so its not really a question of "can it be done?" - they've been doing it already.

If this offers a la carte programming I'm all over it. I'll order HBO and G4 and be done; they're the only two stations I ever watch. If not....meh.

depending on how in depth it is I might actually do this (like if it not only does the whole tv thing of showing tv shows when they actually air but also do things like netflix, then I might replace my netflix sub for this
