Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Preview

Call of Duty Elite, a subscription-based Call of Duty service, will launch this fall with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, according to The Wall Street Journal. Activision Blizzard confirmed the service today, saying that Elite players will have access to extra content, like map-packs. A subscription to Elite won't be required for multiplayer.

Activision hasn't revealed the price of the service yet, but according to the WSJ's report, it will be less than fees for "comparable online-entertainment services" like Netflix.

Parts of COD: Elite will be free, including socia/matchmaking aspects of the service, although full details on how these will work, haven't been revealed yet. The WSJ article also mentions game analysis tools "modeled on stock-trading websites" that delve deeply into your game, "gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful" for gamers... interesting.

Activision head Bobby Kotick told the WSJ that he isn't worried about "pushback" from gamers, because Elite won't be required to play online. While Kotick didn't reveal specifics, he did say that the Elite COD service represents an "enormous investment," and will provide things that would have been impossible without a pay service.

Activision's plan here is obviously to further monetize one of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time, but its success will be determined by how willing players will be to give up the credit card digits, so, players, let me throw it to you: Are you going to sign up for "Elite" when it launches this fall? Answer in our comment section.

i love cod, but this is ridiculous!! what could they possibly offer to make someone possibly want to subscribe to a console fps!!!??? looks like i will be subscribed for what i assume will be a day-one free trial and the corresponding months to get the map packs out of it.

I have to hand it to Activision, they're really smart in the short term, which is all they care about. I'll bet 95% of the people on here who are saying they won't buy the game, will end up getting it. I'm sure Activision will make part of it free, but it will be like every expansion pack they've released. Your friends have it, you don't, so you're the pain in the butt and the reason that no one can play everything, and you'll cave and buy it the subscription. I quit playing online a long time ago because of Call of Duty, so I can say with confidence that I won't be paying anything for online. And I'll even go so far as to say, if they don't focus a lot of their attention on the single player campaign (which they quit doing a long time ago), I won't even pick it up for that, either. The days where COD is just an automatic purchase for me are gone. I just think it's hilarious that they've never made a game where the online portion wasn't broken, and now they're so bold as to actually charge for it. Amazing.

THIS IS RUBBISH! Honestly, I didn't like COD when it first came out. I was a Halo fan. But I got it because a friend recommended it to me, now I love it. They cannot make an Elite, If they do all the good gamers who are a bit poor will be left in the dust. I am a good player and I know I am not getting it when it comes out(Elite that is). And I wont be as upset if they still allow the new map packs to those who do not have Elite. But the point is, don't make an Elite subscription, you will loose to many customers. And if I cannot buy the map packs when the game and Elite comes out. You lost another one.

Ya'll just a bunch of whining losers, that just complain!
Read closely thass all I gotta say!

"ELITE will provide things that would have been impossible without a pay service"
They can't constantly be making new things for FREE, it cost money you know! This will provide the money they need to be making constantly make NEW things.

1+1 dumb oeioke(: or ya'll just don't got money like ME?? xD Your gonna get it anyways, you already know. So don't say your not.
Honestly I think your doing all that complaining so you can hopefully change Activision mind, NOT GONNA WORK. Man up

I won't pay it, but I'm glad it's only optional. On a completely unrelated note, when is "Battlefield 3" coming out?

This is just Activision's grab at more money they shouldn't be reaching for. There's also talk of "premium services" upcoming in WoW too....What exactly is a premium service when you already have a monthly fee?

i guess it depends, right now i'll say no way! but if it stops people from hacking and rotten kids from playing with adults i might do it..depends on how it's set up and what you get for the subscription...everyone is saying no right now, but if they have it set up in a way that's not expensive then they will pay, they pay for stuff like final fantasy, and other games that have a monthly fee!

and once again activision proves it's a greedy pimp. Whoring out it's best ho for way more than she's worth making every player broke. Then infecting them with aids so they have to pay their monthly medical fees because they're told it will help them survive. Meanwhile the pimp is laughing while dusting off that old ho once again for the next year.

You can like or hate what i said but it's the best metaphore for what activision is doing.

Don't you make enough to put your kids through college and pay for your God knows how many solid gold houses you have Bobby (Money Money Money) Kotick of us already?

Why don't you just have to two vers of COD:MW3 when you release it, a normal vers at $90 (that's what we pay for games in the Land Downunder) and then a money grabbing, bend me over the desk and have me with your shotgun vers at $200 for the 'Elite' Subscription.

I'm a fan of the COD series, but I now way am I going to be paying a subscription fee, Battlefiled # and Skyrim you have my undivided attention.

Bobby K I hope you choke on the bills.

I don't like the way the video game industry is heading. Subscription based content, Online pass, and DLC. Having to purchase 3 maps for 15 dollars that should have been released with the game and DLC content that comes out within the first week or month of the games release is really starting to get on my nerves. I am truly sick of the Call of Duty franchise. I don't want to buy another COD ever again with it's EA Sports like yearly release of the same game with a different skin. I used to love COD, but it's just gotten worse and worse since the release of MW2. That being said, I just keep buying the damn things. I keep saying I will not buy MW3. We'll see if I can stay strong and I am not interested in "Elite". (Battlefield 3 looks promising)
