The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences and the Entertainment Software Association puts together a jury of experts each year who select video game artwork to be a part of Into the Pixel. Today, they are announcing 17 works that will become a part of this installation that will travel around the world, beginning at E3 2011, which you can check out right here.
"Now that public institutions have accepted video games as a legitimate form of art, there is no question that video game art has and will continue to have a place in the contemporary art scene," said Martin Rae, president of the AIAS, thereby thumbing his nose at Roger Ebert. When you see these pieces of work up close, either on the screen or in a gallery, there's no denying that a lot of artistic skill and love goes into these pieces, which include work from unreleased games like BioShock Infinite, Orcs Must Die!, Uncharted 3, and more.
Seeing is believing, so head after the break where you can take a look at all of the pieces that were selected, along with a list of the winners.

I HATE this type of self serving double talk. Ebert (and others) do NOT claim that there is no ART in video games, only that the GAME itself cannot be considered ART or an art form, simply because it is interactive. No one will say a movie is not a form of art, but it would NOT be if everyone could take the movie and change it at whim thus destroying the original (take 'colorization' of classic black and white films for instance). Same goes for painting, sculpture and other forms of STATIC art. Don't like Picasso's original art? Then lets repaint the original over and over again then rehang it, but wait, here comes some shmoe with a different take, so redo it yet again. That is NOT art, it is opinion.
There is plenty of art in any video game, hell they have entire teams working on the art work for a game, but no matter how pretty or good a game can be (take L.A. Noir, for instance), the game itself is NOT art and never could be. Not as long as anyone can come along and change the message.

Some of these games I've never even heard of, some were of course to be expected. Except Alien Swarm. Out of all of VALVe's games, I wouldn't of expected that one's artwork to get chosen.
