OpEd: The Sony PSN Security Breach - Why I'm Angry

According to Sony, the shutdown of the PlayStation Network will cost the company an estimated $171 Million. The word comes by way of a revised earnings statement Sony issued in advance of their Thursday earnings report.

According to the company, the breakdown of PSN Network Outage expenses is as follows:

  • The current estimated cost of the personal information theft protection program for customers. "This program includes a set amount of insurance to cover a certain amount of identity theft losses that may be incurred by our customers in certain regions within a set period with respect to misuse of their personal information."
  • Costs of welcome back programs that offer customers certain services (such as games, music and videos) for free
  • Customer support costs
  • Network security enhancement costs
  • Legal and expert costs
  • The impact on our profits due to a possible future revenue decrease.

There could be more costs associated with the outage, of course. As Sony itself says, laying out the possibility of losses from lawsuits, and, if it turns out people's credit card numbers were stolen, and used, that could cost Sony as well. Here's how the company laid it out:

"These amounts are our reasonable assumption based on the information currently available to Sony. So far, we have not received any confirmed reports of customer identity theft issues, nor confirmed any misuse of credit cards from the cyber-attack. Those are key variables, and if that changes, the costs could change. In addition, in connection with the data breach, class action lawsuits have been filed against Sony and certain of its subsidiaries and regulatory inquiries have begun; however, those are all at a preliminary stage, so we are not able to include the possible outcome of any of them in our results forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2012 at this moment."

... got an idea Sony and Nintendo should team up it would be good for both ... on the gameing front anyway xbox has stolen games from both and I being a prexbox gamer see that xbox has been trying to kill Nintendo and Sony for awile and I tend to like older Nintendo titles and newer PlayStation games if they were to join forces they could maybe even end the disloyalty of xbox players because most gamers have more then 1 system by more then 1 company

I expected to see more loses actually, but that is only the number for PSN.

Wonder what the combined total of PSN and SOE is, not to mention the lose of monthly revenue from those who refuse to resub to any SOE mmo ever again (or so they say).

Wow people come on. Everyone hating on Sony. Like I have stated on other sites and their forums; There has been no evidence that anyones accounts or money have been stolen. Get over it, the PSN was down a month. Oh no.... Here come the fanboys of other consoles chiming in with how horrible sony is and all that. All it boils down to is anyone who actually has to pay to play online is jealous that being a PS3 fan and having that console as your choice for gaming gets to play for free, it has blue ray, the PSN plus package pays for itself the moment you get it with free games, themes, avatars, or whatever else you will. It also already allows for 3D gaming. All these things the Wii or Xbox 360 cannot do. Long story short everyone, this will all be a thing of the past after a little while and sony will be just fine, with the PS3 and even more so with the PS4. And look out for their new portable NGP, it will blow the 3DS out of the water...it already has!

well 171 million is better than that 24 Billion at worst estimate. Sony will rebound and see where it goes from this point on.

Im a Playstation fanboy, I have owned every console, I loyally provided sony with revenue, I have all three systems, and two of the ps3 (for which I bought a defective model, sorry other fanboys they breakdown too), I have my platinum on Uncharted and My alien tornado gun for MGS4.

That being said Sony has been nothing but let downs this whole generation.

The Sony Playstation 3 came with PSN for free. When it crashed, fanboys got mad, so Sony used millions that they had to fix the hack that brought it down and please the fanboys that stuck around.

171 million seems low when you think about it. when there are about 70 million PSN users thats about $2.50 for each user. I thought it would be higher.

Lets try a Conspiracy Theory...What if Sony sabatoged itself because of the loses they were suffering by Xbox and Wii...that way they could file bankruptcy, re-establish, and start all over again to try to take over the top again...kind of like Chrysler did years ago...hey i'm just sayin...
