The Road to E3 2011: Sony Report Card

It seems like such a long time ago, but at E3 2010 Sony was looking good. The publisher will certainly have the most interesting – and difficult – transition to this year’s expo. With the massive leak of private user information and the shutdown of the PlayStation Network last month, things are looking hazy for the future of the brand, but one thing is for certain – the company will have to execute the best E3 showing of all time in order to recover.

Enough about the future, let’s now look back to the past – and see just how Sony fared at last year’s show.

E3 2010 Sony Press Conference »

Sony’s press event lacked the bombast of Microsoft’s bizarre Cirque Du Soleil inspired Kinect unveiling, and nothing could really match the water-cooler excitement over Nintendo’s 3DS, but that didn’t stop the publisher from putting together a slick, well-received presentation. With a strong focus on tech – 3D gaming and the Move controller were at the forefront - and a solid lineup of big titles, Sony’s presence was rock-solid, if a little predictable. AAA games were trotted out as expected, including LittleBigPlanet 2, Gran Turismo 5, inFamous 2, Killzone 3, and Final Fantasy XIV Online, along with the multiplatform Dead Space 2, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, and Medal of Honor.

The only big surprises were the announcement of a brand new Twisted Metal and the news that Portal 2 would be available for the platform, despite Valve CEO Gabe Newell’s previous feelings about the PS3. In fact, Newell himself showed up onstage to hawk the title, saying it would be the strongest version.

The only unfortunate element (from a 20/20 hindsight point of view) was the degree to which PlayStation Network’s success was highlighted and presented as integral to the platform. CEO Jack Tretton even went on about the ways people play games, watch movies and so forth on the service, "Because they appreciate all the ways it connects to their lives”. Ouch.

Here’s a cheat sheet of all the goods with links to videos, both promised and delivered.

On the report card, Sony gets a solid B+ from 2010’s performance. With only a couple of noteworthy surprises, and the attendees’ general lack of enthusiasm for Move, it can’t quite compare to Microsoft and Nintendo’s flashier showings, but the sheer number of quality titles brings the grade well above average.

This year, Sony will be going live with their major press event on Monday evening – the eve of the show proper. We’re expecting to see more focus on the big exclusive titles – you can be sure we’ll see big names like Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, The Last Guardian, Resistance 3 and more of Twisted Metal, the gorgeous-looking El Shaddai and Dark Souls, as well as get more details on the NGP (next generation portable).

It would also be nice to get a sense of where PlayStation Network is headed, and what fans can expect next. Sony’s in the odd position of recovering from a disaster yet still boasting a truly exciting lineup in the works for 2011. No matter what happens this year, we’ll be covering it – so get your popcorn ready and park your browser here for E3 2011 coverage.
