Sony has denied claims that their servers were running outdated software and that they lacked firewalls. The rumors were presented during a Congressional hearing by security expert Dr. Gene Spafford. Sony's senior director, Corporate Communications and Social Media, Patrick Seybold, released a statement denying these reports.
"The previous network for Sony Network Entertainment International and Sony Online Entertainment used servers that were patched and updated recently, and had multiple security measures in place, including firewalls."
Dr. Gene Spafford of Purdue University testified that Sony may have been using outdated software and they knew it. According to Dr. Spafford security experts monitoring forums knew Sony was using outdated versions of the Apache Web server, and it "was unpatched and had no firewall installed." He went on to say the issue was "reported in an open forum monitored by Sony employees" several months before the attack. Links to these forums, proof they existed or were written by someone with any authority on the matter were absent from the testimony.
I'm not saying either side is lying, but they can't both be entirely correct. Who do you think is right?

Well Sony has stated that it could be almost June before PSN is back up now. From what it sounds like now they are no longer going with the partial functionality they said would be up last week. It is going to be all or nothing and gave a date of May 31st. So it looks to be down for the rest of the month for all of you who are really wondering.

the only reason why i think Sony is just full of BS, is because the server has been down for so long. Come on Sony!!! whats taking you so long to get it up and runing. if it was MS, it would have been up with in 72 hours. I bet you, they are upgrading their servers now. its a perfect time since the network has been hacked. Oh ya, lets not forget the so call attack from this weekend Sony claims, which they stopped. How can anyone testify that Sony "MAY" have been doing anything? Sony "may" have found a cure for cancer, or the common cold.....but they DIDN'T! This "Dr. Gene Spafford" should get a good old fashioned beat down. It "MAY" even wise the doc up.

Why is it that they were all about giving us dates like, "in a few days" or "in the coming days" at frst. But now its been a while, and theyre not giving us any update as to when they believe itll be up? If they cant get it up right now, at least give us honest estimates on the time frame that it will be.

Hackers hack stuff. I know its a shock but also "Security Experts" are supposed to secure stuff. There is more than enough blame to go around; so any company that blows its own horn paints a target on itself, not just Sony. The fact remains that Sony made a stand; hackers took it as a challenge and Sony's security experts weren't expecting the stars to align leading to this major intrusion.
In summary: Hackers can be mean, "Security Experts" aren't always the best, a people like you and me are still up the virtual river without a paddle.

yes they both can't be entirely correct, and you can't say one is entirely lying, determining what is considered out of date maybe the problem. Sony could think 2 year old crap is not that old hahahahahahahahha, hey they did take a week to tell us that info was stolen, and even if they didn't know exactly what was stolen they still knew there was a breach, and didnot tell us, Sony likes to dance around the truth end of story.

Well it does seem like Sony's servers were outdated being. If you notice that other online games (like the ones for PC) usually have some downtime to update known and unknown issues. Since owning a PS3 I've only seen about 3-5 updates through Sony, and these were mainly 5mo. to a year kind of update. Only thing that really seemed to get an update was the PS Store and not any kind of info on a security update.

I think were blamming the wrong people if it wasn't for the hackers we wouldn't be talking about this right now,I just want to get back to playing on line, I'm jonesin' need my fix, but if it's not over soon I'm trading in my ps3 for an xbox, I mean come on they should have had it fixed by now.
