Sony has denied claims that their servers were running outdated software and that they lacked firewalls. The rumors were presented during a Congressional hearing by security expert Dr. Gene Spafford. Sony's senior director, Corporate Communications and Social Media, Patrick Seybold, released a statement denying these reports.
"The previous network for Sony Network Entertainment International and Sony Online Entertainment used servers that were patched and updated recently, and had multiple security measures in place, including firewalls."
Dr. Gene Spafford of Purdue University testified that Sony may have been using outdated software and they knew it. According to Dr. Spafford security experts monitoring forums knew Sony was using outdated versions of the Apache Web server, and it "was unpatched and had no firewall installed." He went on to say the issue was "reported in an open forum monitored by Sony employees" several months before the attack. Links to these forums, proof they existed or were written by someone with any authority on the matter were absent from the testimony.
I'm not saying either side is lying, but they can't both be entirely correct. Who do you think is right?

I honestly think that I am the only person that isn't upset by sony getting hacked. Just a little note, It doesn't matter what kind of security sony had, the people that hacked into their servers had linux on their computer, that person was going to get in no matter what. No questions.

stop complaining about getting the PSN back up and running...seriously. They're doing the best they can to secure both you and themselves. If they were to put the PSN back up, who's to say the hackers aren't gonna do the same thing again? Its not that simple. If you got other things to do then do it. You can still play online games on your PC if you want to, just to keep yourself entertained for while. If you have families, spend time with them instead of blabbing online about how you do so. Just give Sony the time that they need and don't expect an official date until they're sure that they have you completely protected if this were to happen again.

Too much "work" to accomplish any of these? I wonder how much physical exertion these people actually exert on a daily basis aside from going to actual "grown up people" work and work their thumbs on a controller......

To all the people saying get psn back up asap, think about what you are saying. the network has been down all this because of a hack, if they bring back to soon and it gets hacked again, what good will it have done? Just let them get it right and play Portal and Mortal Kombat with a real person next to you instead of over the internet for a bit longer.

There had to of been something not up to date or up to specs with the type of access the hackers were allowed. Now just take a minute too and think about this. If they were not outdated why is it taking them almost a month to update their online network infrastructure now???

Due to Dr. Spafford being an IVY League university employee, his opinion can't be trusted. Why you might ask, because Ivy league universities place their importance on the professors and not their students education. That vanity should never be taken lightly. He is using reports to make is educated assumption, instead of being on hand to know the facts first hand. Interpretation can kill facts, and the Dr. should know better. Then again he is a "Boiler Maker," reason enough to stick his nose in the clouds.

Is anyone else getting sick of roomers becoming news and being taken as fact. I don't even care at this point who is lying, stop spending all your effort on finger pointing and fix the network. I also hope the hackers who did this spend the rest of their lives in VD ridden agony. And if they thought they were doing something "noble" then i guess all the computer skill in the world doesn't lead to any common sense.
