Howard Stringer, the president of Sony USA, has posted an apology letter on Sony's website, and while the letter doesn't offer any more info on the attacks or Sony's response, it is an interesting read. We already know that Sony is offering PSN gamers compensation for their stolen data, as well as hugely beefing up security for free, but Stringer's letter is the emotional, personal response to the issue. Stringer apologizes to gamers, writing:
"As a company we — and I — apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack."
Stringer goes on to explain the amount of time that Sony took to notify consumers as to the security breach:
"I know some believe we should have notified our customers earlier than we did. It’s a fair question. As soon as we discovered the potential scope of the intrusion, we shut down the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services and hired some of the best technical experts in the field to determine what happened. I wish we could have gotten the answers we needed sooner, but forensic analysis is a complex, time-consuming process. Hackers, after all, do their best to cover their tracks, and it took some time for our experts to find those tracks and begin to identify what personal information had — or had not — been taken."
I was most struck by this quote from Stringer:
"In the last few months, Sony has faced a terrible earthquake and tsunami in Japan. But now we are facing a very man-made event – a criminal attack on us — and on you — and we are working with the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world to apprehend those responsible."
While the entire letter is carefully crafted, neutral corporate-speak, the above paragraph almost seems to show anger at the situation and the people responsible, as well as tying Sony and gamers together as co-victims in the security breach. Tacitly comparing the security breach to the recent natural disasters in Japan is a bit tasteless, but it shows the seriousness with which Sony is taking the situation, and exactly how disastrous they regard it as.
Of course, most PSN gamers are most interested in one question: When will the PSN be back up? According to Stringer, it will be in the "coming days."
"In the coming days, we will restore service to the networks and welcome you back to the fun. I wanted to personally reach out and let you know that we are committed to serving you to the very best of our ability, protecting your information better than ever, and getting you back to what you signed up for – all the games and great entertainment experiences that you expect from Sony."
So, what do you think of Stringer's letter? Let us know in our comment section.

oh and one last thing.. don't be pissed at Sony for this... be pissed at the a** wipe hackers... Sony is just trying to fix what they broke.. why be mad at the one who's trying to fix things? you guys make no sense who are going on about how you hate sony because of this..
tymyshoe
seriously? you gamer's are a bunch of idiots... first off learn to live without videogames.. go outside and do something.. second.. most of you are on the free ride with sony so they aren't OBLIGATED to do anything for you.. just the people who pay for the service.. third.. it's an apology.. stop whining about "learn how to really apologize" i swear gamers just love to whine about anything and everything.. get a life.. ya it sucks that the PSN is down.. i'd rather have it up but it's not the end of the world..

Personally this feels very much like Sony trying to keep their customers. While that is expected of any corporation, It personally makes me very cautious due to it's effects on those who read it and then immediately allow a 'letter' that was Designed to to simply make sure that Sony loses the least amount of money as possible, to sway your oppinion. If Sony said "Hey we screwed up, we recommend these awesome single player games or hey why not crank up a LAN party while we make sure everything is okay." I would have Immensely more respect than their current misdirection tactics of "You know there's this group that doesn't like what we did, and by golly look at this here's a 'mysterious' letter that showed up in the second attack AFTER we started pointing fingers at the very same group." and the BP Approach of "Were sorry" and "we are in the same boat as you" (of course they were in a yacht and the gulf coast is STILL in a dingy infested with headcrabs.
Comparing an inconvenience to loss of life is not simply tasteless it is even deplorable, In fact it shows a Corporate structure trying to use a devastatingly horrible event to get leverage on a financial situation, it shows the lack of real sincerity from the Corporation

ok 1st of all i don't think in any way was he comparing the earthquake and tsunami to this crash. He was just stating that those things had an affect on them previously and now they are having this "criminal" incident he wasnt saying oh this is so much worse than all that. I believe you are reading a little too much into the statement. Second I agree with him we were attacked just like they were it affects us all. Whoever did this is malicious there are always going to be hackers, but why would they attack other people/gamers/hackers information who do they think they are zero cool or something. It's not 1995 this isnt a movie and angelina jolie is not going to F@%$ u if u hack something so what's the point?

I feel that it is a bit late 4 an apology letter. There is no point in apologizing 4 something that happened 3 weeks ago. He should of been spending his time on putting Playstation network back online. No one wants to hear how sorry Playstation is. All we care about is knowing when we will be able to play online again.

Just fire this creepy old man. He is like 45 years old and a Fan Boy... It is annoying and embarrassing. Any time there is something bad about Sony the tag is "other peoples misfortune" I understand that this Fan Boy thinks that is so hilarious that he needs to put it in EVERY single time. If it is an Xbox problem, you will never see this clown making a joke of any kind. Ether fire him, or get someone else who isn't as rigidly biased as a Fox reporter. I am sure he can go back to creepily watching little kids on a playground.
skitofit
i think Sony needs to bring back Linux. thats what this is really about.
iBeDunDidDat
You know who is laughing about this? Bill Gates.... Y you ask.... Cause he knows he's getting my money... Today! FUG YOU SONY! THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!!

I've been a PS fan since day one and I'm never leaving. I even own a 360 and I still never abandoned my PS3. I would gladly play PS offline than xbox live.
mttmercado

just because they use the word, "apologize" it doesn't mean its an apology or that they are apologizing... "As a company we and I apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused by this attack." what are they apologizing for? they aren't. They basically are saying "whoever attacked us is a real ass because they caused you inconvenienced you" they are not saying that they messed up in any way or did anything wrong. It is not an apology.
Dehnyen
Apology accepted. I never was mad at Sony for this. That's just ridiculous. People in todays world are so soft. Their lives are so deprived of anything truly meaningful that they can't handle a handful of weeks with no PSN. I mean yeah, it's annoying. I want to play Portal 2 co-op. I miss the store. I miss it all in general. But damn, to be so outraged? Stupid.
akadkinson
I got your back SONY. I'm not going anywhere.
NinjaSaku
This is where true Playstation fans will truly shine, and i for one would never EVER say ill switch to 360 because i for one and a true PS fan boy
jaysun3535
Sony has written us a letter of apology and all we can do is spit in there face that says a lot for sony fan base but it will be funny to see W.O.W or MICRO$OFT database get hacked but let me guess y'all will blame blizzard and Microsoft for what happen instead of the people that caused it or what if they just stop online gaming for all media cause of these hackers then who would you blame we would have a bunch of mod controllers and chipped systems and a bunch of whiny ten year olds who will have to play alone the ones who lives on COD and GOW will have to face one thing that we all will miss what we had so in the mean time shut the hell up and play your story mode on your PS3 titles and the PSN will be back later
over9000!!!!
if its not back up by sunday afternoon i'm officially switching to an xbox 360. I'm not letting those hackers ruin a third gaming weekend
