Sony will offer a free identity theft protection service called "AllClear ID Plus." The service will be available through Debix, Inc, one of the nations "most reputable identity protection firms." The service will be provided for both PSN and Qriocity account holders in the US. The plan will be a free of charge for 12 months. Sony will begin sending out activation emails in the next few days. This offer is limited however, you must redeem your code by June 18. Keep reading to see a list of details on what the program will provide PSN users.
NEWS: Sony Responds To The U.S. House of Representatives -- Anonymous Possibly Involved
Here are some details for the AllClear ID Plus protection plan.
- Cyber monitoring and surveillance of the Internet to detect exposure of an AllClear ID Plus customer’s personal information, including monitoring of criminal web sites and data recovered by law enforcement. If his/her personal information is found, the customer will be alerted by phone and/or email and will be provided advice and support regarding protective steps to take. The customer will also receive monthly identity status reports. Debix works with an alliance of cyber-crime experts from the government, academia and industry to provide these services.
- Priority access to licensed private investigators and identity restoration specialists. If an AllClear ID Plus customer receives an alert, or otherwise suspects that he/she may be the victim of identity theft, the customer can speak directly, on a priority basis, with an on-staff licensed private investigator, who will conduct a comprehensive inquiry. In the case of an identity theft, the customer can work with an identity restoration specialist to contact creditors and others, and take necessary steps to restore the customer’s identity.
- A $1 million identity theft insurance policy per user to provide additional protection in the event that an AllClear ID Plus customer becomes a victim of identity theft. This insurance would provide financial relief of up to $1 million for covered identity restoration costs, legal defense expenses, and lost wages that occur within 12 months after the stolen identity event.
A similar plan is currently in the works for other countries but as of now is only available to US residents. An identity theft plan that would cover up to $1 million dollars in damages is a surprising offer. It lets gamers know Sony is serious about protecting their users' data going forward. However, I'm not thrilled about the offer only being available until June 18.
What do you think? Is this identify theft protection plan a good idea?

Only available to people in the US? Typical. The UK almost always gets screwed over, be it release dates, videogame availability, or protection in times where your identity may have been stolen.
GJ, Sony. GJ.

I think ill sign up for the offer, but I am sticking with the PSN cards. Than once i get a 360 again I will go with the MS cards there. Because its true when this could have easily happen to MS, only difference between MS and Sony is MS has a obligation to get their service back up in short time since you pay for the service.

This seems like it could be a good idea but I don't like that it's only free for 12 months. My husband had to cancel his credit card because we stupidly used it on the Playstation Network and then shortly after that Sony Online Entertainment got hacked into and I had to cancel my card because I used it on EQ2.
In theory, however, this seems like a good idea. I do like that coverage is up to one million dollars but to me it seems like a plan covering identity for up to such a large ammount would be pretty pricey.
One thing is for sure... From now on out I will only add funds to my PSN and EQ2 wallet with the pre-paid PSN and SOE cash cards.
If they ever come back online, that is.

Well Sony has never really been reliable or really backed up their merchandise so this is quite a surprise to me. I'm glad to see out of all their merchandise they plan to take care of their gaming platform, but they do need to step it up. Getting hacked once is understandable, but twice and a possible third this weekend, plus a possible law suit means they need to work hard to get themselves back up there. I actually know quite a few people have already sold their PS3s and got 360's because they feel like they can't trust Sony, and would be safer with Microsoft.. which does make sense since they have decades worth of experience with security software. I'm a big Sony fanboy, except for this generations PS3, they're last in the running for consoles and they need to start pulling themselves together and start stepping it up or I fear Sony might just get knocked out of the race if this stuff continues. They're taking the right step forward, lets hope they can keep moving forward.

This is a good move by sony, I almost feel this is a little over the top but better safe than sorry.

Why is June 18th not enough? You have over a month to sign up, that is plenty of time, and if you dont well thats your fault. Dont be lazy and handle your buisness

So I will be protected for free for one year, but I have until June 18th to redeem the offer. But after that just like with my laptop, I will have to pay 50 bucks or more in order to keep it??
Why should I be excited about this?? What if the network isn't even up by the 18th?? then What?? Would I just have to just pay for it out right??

Sounds like a good deal, I mean a whole year of Identity protection is pretty sweet considering i'm sure my personal info is on numerous websites and servers that are hackable so this is a great.

Itd be nice if I could change my email because for some reason I can't access it.

i have a 360 and a PS3 maybe sony needs to charge a fee for it's online looks like that the way it's going to be anyway with this charge for your ID only for one year looks like the days of playing online are slipping away as we speak

Congrats to Sony, maybe nothing will happen, maybe there was really nothing really stolen, but is good that they are caring for their users. That right there will give them their credit back. Good job.

Why are people still hating on Sony? If they do see through on this and give this to all their customers, this would cost them so much money, not to mention all the business they have lost cause of this whole thing. Sure Sony should have spoke up sooner about the specifics of the attacks, but this, at least to me, makes up for the delayed response.

Good on you, Sony.

this is exactly why prepaid credit cards were invented, worst case scenario thief gets the balance on the card, as opposed to something that could potentially ruin your credit forever , I'm lucky I had a debt card on my account and I highly doubt anyone would bother with it as opposed to a credit card with a $12,000 spending limit.

It is nice to see this offer to insure the security of the users accounts but I wonder how much this going cost SOE.

Damn. Sony has been getting into some suckey stuff lately, and 2011 was supposed to be the big year for them. Glad I don't have a PS3, but it sure does suck for Sony & people that do.

Not only that, as further compensation for all that we the customers have endured; Sony is offering 3 FREE, " Sonic the Hedgehog " games, and you get to choose what three you would like.
