The Noir of L.A. Noire: Why Rockstar

According to Rockstar, upcoming open-world crime game L.A. Noire will ship on three discs for the Xbox 360.

"L.A. Noire was always going to be a massive game, from the size and detail of the world to the length of the cases, and of course, the sheer amount of MotionScan data required for the faces of over 400 actors in-game," Jeronimo Barrera of Rockstar told Kotaku, "To tell the story and make the game we wanted to make, we knew that it was going to take an entire single layer Blu-ray disc and three Xbox discs."

Lest you think you'll constantly be getting off your couch a hundred times to switch discs, Rockstar says that you'll only have to swap out DVDs twice, and they happen at "natural breaks between cases."

"Since the game is built around the concept of progressing through individual cases from desk to desk, players on Xbox will find disc-swapping is hassle-free," Barrera said.

Before you start imagining that L.A. Noire will be three times as long as Rockstar's single-disc Grand Theft Auto 4 or Red Dead Redemption, keep in mind: One of the main features of Noire is the facial-video technology. Basically, the cut scenes are meant to be more detailed than any other game I've ever heard of, and that, no doubt, will take a whole of disc space. Speaking of disc space, that Blu-Ray on the PS3 is seeming pretty useful right about now, eh?

While Nikole "Zipper" Zivalich says she hates switching discs, I feel it's a nostalgic trip back in time to my youth of playing PC games, some of which came on like 8 floppies that had to be switched constantly. What do you think?

I think a good game is worth playing no matter how many discs, Mass Effect 2 and Dead Space 2. I have played so many pc titles with multiple cds, more than I could name, all of them worth it. Do I wish that X-Box had gone with BlueRay, of course, but who knows what the future may hold. I'm not sad I preordered it on X-Box 360.

I wish the next game systems to come out have built in disk changers, call me lazy, but that would be great...

It may be 3 discs now, but when there are enough copys sold after it being on store shelves for 7 months like Halo Reach, Fallout New Vegas, & Call of Duty Black Ops it'll hit the Games on Demand section in the Marketplace. So it's not really that bad for anyone on the Xbox Live Network.

Multi-disc games are OK by me. More discs=better graphics/more content/more hours of gameplay. Remember Final Fantasy VII? That was a box set compared to the newest title in the series. Plus, it took a LONG time to complete.

L.A. Noire may or may not be a 50+ hour game, but they are using new tech that require a lot of disc space. If anything this will motivate MS to create DVDs that use the same formatting as the Xbox 360 games today, but with twice or 3 times the megabites.

This doesn't surprise me actually. The was originally built for the PS3 and after the it went multiplatform the PS3 was still the lead system but oh well, It's still be good you just have to take a break.

Will Rockstar employ the usual 1152x640 resolution with quincunx anti aliasing for the PS3 and 1280x720 with 2x multi-sampling anti aliasing for the 360, the same way they did in GTA and RDR

Exactly. This will still be an awesome game regardless of how many discs it requires on Xbox 360.

I own a PS3, and I almost MISS swapping discs. Hahaha, it's almost nostalgic, ya know? But one disc is still cool.

And I have no idea why people are still saying "PSN is down, GET OWNED".., LA Noire is a SINGLE PLAYER GAME. Too bad you First-Person Shooter fanboys wouldn't know anything about that.

All this fanboyism is sickening. Three discs? So? It's the same game. Who cares?

You guys trying to use this as some excuse to bag on Xbox is ridiculous. It'll still be an awesome game, Rockstar was well aware of this while making the game, and this nothing new to any Xbox gamer with Mass Effect 2.

Get over it fanboys, your PSN is still down which means all that awesome hardware isn't really worth much when the majority of PS3 owners play online, and now you're just reaching for something to try and get on Xbox about. This is not it.

Look on the bright side, at least you'll have a brand new game to play without even have to worry about multiplayer. Unless LA Noire offers multiplayer, then you lose again.
