Things just keep getting worse for Sony. Only one week after the first class action lawsuit was filed against Sony due to their massive security breach resulting in a PlayStation Network outage, a second one has been filed in Canada for the tiny amount of $1 billion. Toronto law firm McPhadden Samac Tuovi LLP is filing against Sony Japan, Sony USA, Sony Canada, and "other Sony entities", saying that due to breach of privacy Sony must pay their client for the "costs of credit monitoring services and fraud insurance coverage for two years".
Their client is a young lady named Natasha Maksimovic, a 21-year-old from Mississauga. Maksimovic said in a statement, "If you can't trust a huge multi-national corporation like Sony to protect your private information, who can you trust?" and went on to say, "It appears to me that Sony focuses more on protecting its games than its PlayStation users."
While the first lawsuit filed against Sony did not admit the amount in damages that the Rothken law firm expected from Sony, the $1 billion price tag this time around seems like stretching it a little, don't you think?

problem is Sony has had such outdated security it is boarder line on incoputence, so yeah they should be sued because they turned sum 100 million of there costumers into victums by there neglect.
So when they were giving each other pats on the back and raises they should have been doing something about the pproblem but look at Sony's history they have a long chain of sweeping things under the rug till it gets broken.
And with 100million possable identity thefts.
So it's almost as if Sony handed the information of these people to the hackers.
also fyi lawyer + doctor = vampire :p

i like how all these retarded kids think sueing sony is the wrong way to do things and that we should be sueing the hackers...
excuse me but how do you sue someone you cant find or even know his or her name?
this is how it works, we sue sony for what ever amount and then sony in turns sues the hackers for the same amount thus losing nothing, thats how it works because you retards seem to think that psn users should just ignore this and be happy...well...yeah good luck on breaking that wall down with your face
and as others have said on the ps blog, sony is equally at fault because they had lapse security and very out dated security tech, the hackers AND sony are at fault and like i said...people would love to sue the hackers but again, how do you sue someone you have no idea is? let alone this hacking being an inside job...

and crap are getting heavier. But i wish the best to all, both Sony and those affected by it. Good luck and start working on privacy protection, like maybe Lifelock, seriously.

Obviously lawyers are starting to salivate and trying to milk some bucks. But free credit monitoring for all 'potentially' affected customers should be a given.
To all those defending $ony as being a victim, i disagree. They solicited our trust by asking for our personal and financial data and then failed to safeguard it. Yes hackers are the real criminals here, but in my view, $ony was negligent in protecting our data.
I also find humor in that the $ony-only fanboys are quick to minimize the impact or outright forgive $ony. We all know what their reaction would be if this happened to M$...

good for sony

I'm sorry, Sony should have a Data Security Officer.
A company holding 77+ million users data and you don't have a guy making sure the security is up to par... As a multi billion dollar company you're telling me that SONY isn't at fault on this?
Knowing and being warned their security sucked months before it happened.
Sony just became the poster child for why big companies NEED security.
And as we just saw on C-span the secret service did a study showing that hacking could be avoided using latest patches of apache... Which is free. 92% of the breaches were easy 96% of them could have been avoided with a single patch!
Sony It is your fault. As much as I hate the kid in the basement taking you to the cleaners. PAY A PERSON TO SECURE OUR DATA before it is needed.

These stupid idiots think they are even gonna get a dime i doubt that

Also everyone better pray non of these cases actually succeed because if they do, they can have a catastrophic effect on the world's economy. Just imagine if a precedent from this case is set that states every company is liable for every single customer who's info gets illegally stolen and they have to pay each for "damages". It would basically wipe out even the largest companies over-night!
And just image the fraud that could spark between rival companies. Instead of legally competing with a rival company, why not hire a couple of hackers and steal their customer's info just to bankrupt the company overnight = insta no more competition.

Admittingly, I saw this story earlier today, and only one word came to mind when seeing this, GREED. I have a feeling that this isn't the end of lawsuits against Sony. Mainly because of the scale this network breech has gotten major attention around numerous news outlets and the internet. This news getting into the wrong person's ears (namingly lawyers who see it as an opportunity to make this retirement), and using the reports to convince people into suing a large corporation (in this case Sony) for an absorbited amount of money that might not have even anything to do with how much the plaintiffs have lost. Something makes me wish that these people could see the crap that the lawyers that are representing them selling them. Because in truth, at the end of the day, whether they win or lose in court, the lawyer's still gonna be looking for those payments in legal fees. And if they don't have it, all it'll be is eff you, pay me. Very true, consumers are the victims in this travesty, but to say that Sony isn't a victim in all this is a straight up lie. Because no matter how big they are, whether you love them or hate them, they're a business, and they're losing money because of this, as well as taking shots to their reputation.

I love the way 90% of the people who do not care about their credit or card info either:
A: Are using their parents card.
B: Are stupid stoners who do not really get credit and the real danger they could be in.
C: Think they are some kind of hacker psychologist; yet do not seem to understand no one would do this for anything but money. The money is coming from some where and they didn't steal Sony's bearer bonds; they stole YOUR information. I can not believe, especially based on how many people I know in RL do not really even seem to think the PS3 is that amazing, are willing to roll over or turn a blind eye to getting totally rammed in the rear by a HUGE corporation. Stop acting like Sony is Nintendo. They are not the cute under dogs. They have made and sold EVERYTHING in the tech world for decades and now they have to pay for ONE mistake. Jesus people demand some respect from people you give your money to.

it sounds to me that shes trying to score out of this incident and just whipped up a sorry ass story to make her look like the victim. if she was so damn worried about her credit card info she would do what a normal person would and just cancel it.
Kadziet
Lol. Why sue Sony? Sue the hacker I say and put him into jail for a long time lol. I'm losing my patience a bit but I'm stilll completely loyal to Sony. Sure it's been down but I've been burning through games I've barely played. Sony is a victim of the hack too. Also it's pretty convienient the price of the Xbox 360 dropped the same day the PSN went down. Shifty right?
I'm hoping it's up soon.

Leah Jackson posted this story. Not so surprising. Please include your cynical opinion, I hated the article due to the lack of it not being unprofessional (Your Staple is needed).

Wow 1 billion for personal data theft. The same personal data that these same people post on facebook without a second though is now worth 1 billion. I could easily understand the billion if a half a million or more users had credit card data stolen, but this is ridiculous. That data is completely valueless. If you are stupid enough to fall for a phishing scheme, you deserve to have your money taken. Sites like Facebook are just saling this info off to the highest bidder and no one is suing them.
Another thing is to quote Sony's address to the House of Representatives "We discovered that the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named Anonymous with the words We are Legion." " With that the motivation of this attack seems more political than just theft. Maybe they were trying make a statement about how much Sony cares their consumer. Who knows? What is important is that while that did give Sony some horrible PR, they look like the a-holes that they are. Then again maybe someone was taking advantage of the whole hacker debacle and took the opportunity to breach the security and frame Anonymous as a distraction.
Anyways, this lawsuit is pretty stupid and we'll know more when the FBI or someone other agency catches the "intruders." G4, I know you're trying to cover every little detail but you shouldn't waste your time covering asinine lawsuits that amount to nothing. It seems as though that this story is being milked for all its worth. I'd rather you just repost the PSblog with comments and thoughts from the G4 staff. If it's obvious that something has no merit, why would you even give it the time of day?
Shuklar
It's a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT morons, meaning the money isn't used by just one person. Any PSN user would be entitled to file a claim under the same lawsuit in order to pay for the credit monitoring services.
Just like I don't support her stupidity and greed, I don't support the stupidity of G4 users.
JustTheBeginning
Excuse my mean-ness but this is just a dumb girl who has no idea who the internet works. There is no company in the world that is 100% safe from hackers. That does not mean they are not trying or are negligent just because they were successfully attacked. Hackers are just like terrorists, sure looking back the airlines and cocpits were vastly under-protected but that still does not mean its the airline's fault for 9/11, same goes for here.
dino2100
it seriously doesn't even come that close financially to get credit monitoring..... Not sure how much it would cost for fraud insurance.
TheBRADLeyB
Well we don't even know if Criminals even WANTED this Data. It may have been Anon just taking the System down or then again the Anon attack could have alerted other hackers to Sony's Weakness and they capitalized.
I mean people can say if this didn't happen to Sony it would've happened to MS or Nintendo but I don't buy that. I don't buy that all of a sudden after an Anon attack and it becoming rumored the information wasn't encrypted that some hackers randomly decided to go after Sony. Additionally why not go after Microsoft which was I am assuming a lot more people on it and a lot more CC Info.
I'm not bashing Sony here, I'm just saying I think it's hasty to say, "Well if it wasn't Sony it would've been Microsoft!" that's like saying if it wasn't Kennedy who was victim of Assassination then it would've been whoever he ran against (Nixon I believe).
Also you have to recall that unless Sony can say exactly which members had their information stolen that 13,000 could be ANY of the 77 Million... So they can sue easily for the time, money and inconvience of having to change all their CC information. Sounds weak but I'm sure it'll hold up in court.
Also how does Sony not know what Information is Encrypted and what Information isn't?
Rayzorshark
FYI...this is a class action lawsuit on behalf of approximately 1 million Canadian Playstation network users...not just one woman.
kapassikey
rule of the thumb, no company or entity can be trusted 100%. but as one guy once put it "its like your wearing a bullet proof vest and i shoot you in the head and then blame you for not having a bullet proof skull" lol.
the woman just wants to get rich quick by taking advantage of the situation probably. and most likely (personal opinion) is white. gives her a field power bonus
