The Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta has been tossing more hot lead than an Aperture Science turret lately, and plenty of that rain of pain is coming courtesy of the new weapons in the game. We've put together a video guide to help you understand the new weapons, and to make it easier for you to decide which one needs to be your chosen tool of destruction.

Shotguns in Gears of War are points of serious contention. Some people love them, some people hate them, and everyone has been killed by them at one point or another. The Sawed-Off Shotgun is a new addition to Gears, adding an even more lethal weapon than the Gnasher to close-range combat. It has a slow reload time, but is dead up close as it turns opponents to goo.
Sniper rifles in Gears matches are something you sprint for if you're good with them, or things you avoid if you're clumsy and you don't want your head blown off. Now there's a new power weapon that can kill you with literally one shot, where the old sniper only guaranteed you a one-shot kill if it was a headshot. With the new One Shot, it lives up to its name by liquifying enemies at range. Plus it beams out a laser sight that will have people in its path peeing in their pants.
Retro is all the rage these days, and even Gears is getting a taste of it with the Retro Lancer. This was the weapon used by Gears before the current Lancer came into service. You'll quickly notice two things about it: 1) It doesn't have a chainsaw; instead it features a pop-out bayonet that comes in to play when you hold down the B button and roadie-run into enemies. And 2) It is incredibly inaccurate but deadly lethal at close range. It's a shotgun deterrent as well, and one of my current favorites.

the sawed off shot gun ruins close range battles in my opinion in the game makes it way too easy, The hammer burst needs abit more recoil besides that i like every thing about the beta. They should tone down the sawed off abit or or change it to a double shot as in fire twice instead of both shells in one shot and tone down the damage slightly... i think at least

Wow, Im impressed. Epic games (more like Epic fail) had a chance to fix there multiplayer twice now, but failed to do so...twice now. Call me crazy, but I personally don't think getting one shotted by some noob roadie running with a shotgun is fun. Thats all people do in Gears 2, and it's all people did in the beta. I find it baffling how people see that as "enjoyable".

i dont know about any of you but nothing beats the feeling of downing an enemy and then waiting till all their teammates going up to revive and turning all of them to smoothies with the sawed off. getting a quadkkill is awesome!

Oh yeah and meleeing with the hammerburst is a good way to embarass someone, and i dont get why people dont do executions as much, especially this guy in the video who had a downed enemy in a safe position like 10 times, might as well do something cool and gnab a some extra points then just give the guy a lame kick and run off

The person with the one shot had 5 or 6 easy shots and never took them, you really need to learn how to pull the trigger. Also whoever was using the sawed off, how do you miss a person twice at point blank range?

It took me a little while to come around to this beta. But now that I've learned a lot more, it's a lot more enjoyable. These new load out weapons, retro lancer and sawed off shot gun, are your best friends. Learn to blindfire with the sawed off, and you'll be deadly. Keeping a good distance in front of you and your enemy when using the retro lancer is key. When faced with a shotgun enemy, counter every roll and sprint with a roll of your own to keep that solid distance between you guys.

Saw some interesting stats for this game:
US pre-orders are at 449,000, 22 weeks out.
At 22 weeks reach was 103,000 and COD was 78,000.
This could be the biggest game of 2011.
