Xbox Briefly Unbans Live Accounts?

Microsoft Xbox Live Team Comments On Sony PlayStation Network Security Breach

While Sony's PSN problems are the talk of the gaming world (and the rest of the world, for that matter), Microsoft's Xbox Live Network apparently had problems of its own last night. Scattered reports from the internet suggest that Microsoft unbanned a bunch of previously banned Live accounts, then banned them again several hours later.

According to commenters on hacker websites, some time last night, gamers with Xboxes that were forbidden due to "flashed" harddrives suddenly were allowed to play multiplayer games. Within a few hours, the consoles were banned once again.

My immediate thought: Microsoft is probably working around the clock to keep their network from being intruded upon, and somehow accidentally, briefly unbanned the accounts... but there's always the darker possibility that someone who isn't Microsoft flipped the "unban" switch. Microsoft hasn't commented on the unbannination, so we have no way of knowing what exactly happened. That leaves the floor open to you, reader. Feel free to speculate at will in our comment section.

Microsoft is trying to set a world record for most D-bag hackers logged on. LOL! Seriously, I doubt it was hacker either MS is trying to prevent network intrusion or taking care of the MW2 fisher D-bags.

I think that they were/are compromised. As I have been hacked recently and as far as Xbox was concerned I made the purchases. My Xbox was shut off and I was sitting next to my computer. I suddenly got emails via my smartphone confirming my purchases. I quickly changed my password and disputed the charges with my credit card. I also email Microsoft and called them. they refunded one charge but the other one they said it had to have been made by my Xbox and I assured them nobody would be able to do so as I was watching a movie from my DVD player on the TV my Xbox was connected to and my Xbox was off!!! Those greedy little money grubbers wouldn't give me my money back but my credit card helped me out and claimed fraud against them. not only that but CHASE said this has been going on for a while. Microsoft just tell us your stuff has been hacked and stop scamming these credit card companies into covering the money you owe us.

I have a question to all the Microsoft and Sony fanboys how is this funny? How is this a joke? You no life retarded idiots sicken me. I understand what being a fanboy is being about but making fun of this on either side is just being an a hole. Grow up, my god maybe it would be funny if you account stuff got stolen on either xbox or psn. And some used your credit card right?

@ILL_GoOn its so funny to you I will lol if your info get stolen at one point would that not be funny?

I have both a live and psn account and this is just horrible whats happening. While it appears nothing happening with live right now and it may of been test I hope Microsoft has a strong security. As with psn this is sad, I am now worried and to the people saying that s what sony deserved? No did the people who bought a psp or ps3 deserve there service to go down and account info to possible be stolen.

Who ever is doing this now needs to be arrested this is not a game anymore its a crime.

I miss the old console wars sega vs nintendo where it was straight up console bashing and games no online or worries. Whats happening now is not to be joked about.

speaking of which I wonder how nintendo is reacting to this. In terms of users, Wii, 3ds, dsi have a bigger instal base than 360, and psp- ps3. Now I am not sure how many people have credit cards to there accounts but that is still a lot of people. And we are not sure who is doing this and there reason. It may be against only sony and there players or it could be all three.

One last thing @Tomselwick you are both right and wrong pc can be the worst for this before when console had online gaming it was the only area it could happen with. The only reason why it is better now is with all the security with sites but even still nothing is safe.

PS I did not notice any lag last night on live I was playing reach, which either way if there was lag or not it would be hard to tell with that game as there is usually lag .

What the heck is wrong with people?

MS needs to stop acting Macho and Step up there game?
MS said hacking only happens to Sony?

Neither one of these statements is true.

I'm sure MS is constantly doing everything they can to keep information secure. WHICH BTW Phishing is not hacking people, It's not MS' fault if you get phished because you put your password into a website to receive free MS Points.

Additionally MS has not said ANYTHING about Sony getting hacked. They 'No Comment' ed that.

I understand people are upset they can't play PS3 games online right now but c'mon let's stop making stuff up and trying to start console wars.

I don't go running around making up stuff about Sony.

Bottom line is that as much as everyone would like to believe, MS is not out of the hacker's reach. They all need to stop playing Macho mas Macho with the consumer's and step up their games because it looks like the hackers already have.

This whole debacle is why it's best to play online with a PC game instead of console networks.

On the best case scenario side this sounds like Microsoft went "whoops" and took off the banned accounts or had to unban to do a system's check. Worst case scenario someone tried to hack Microsoft and was just only able to hit the unban button. Either way Microsoft needs to make sure there are no holes in their net because if there is, that's probably MILLIONS of PAID accounts exposed to the world.

Could be a mistake by Microsoft or it could be hackers toying with XBOX Live to remind MS that their not as secure as the fanboys believe.

I find this to be a generous gesture from Microsoft. I bet they unbanned all consoles to give people a second chance, or help those who bought a used console that was already banned when they bought it.
