playstation network psn logoAccording to Sony's Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, Patrick Seybold an "unauthorized person" has obtained PlayStation Network Users' personal information, including name, address, password, login. According to the company, it's possible that credit card data has been accessed as well. In other words, things just went from a inconvenience to a potential catastrophe for millions of PlayStation 3 users.

According to Sony:

"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

Sony's full statement is under the cut.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

  1. Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
  2. Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
  3. Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

You may wish to visit the web site of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General, and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone (877) 566-7226; or www.ncdoj.gov. We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment

We'll have more info as it develops.

    I also have to wonder what Sony plans to do for people that have subscriptions to things like PS+ or DC Universe Online. Those people paid to have a certain amount of time using those services, and have lost one week, and potentially more because of this. I know the Infamous 2 beta has been extended by Sucker Punch since nobody can use it now.

    I suggest that everyone memorize their new password when the online services get back online, and put it on manually, so you would not have to worry when something like this happens again. I am a dedicated Sony PS3 user and I am by their side. Its not their fault that some low life,( probably living in a warehouse, with apet rat to keep him company), with no absolute social liufe whatsoever, decided to screw with a company that would rather provide than takefor its user. I hope U see this u Incredibly mindshot individual. Because I amgoing to find yu.

    Okay, so I have a question that perhaps one of you could help me with. Back in the beginning of March I deleted my credit card info from the PSN (I was avoiding DCUO charging me with a subscription fee after the free month). To my knowledge, I completely deleted any card info I had. But am I in the clear? Or might Sony have kept that information somewhere else in the nebulous virtual space of the PSN? Should I still worry or not? Thank you, to anyone who has the time to answer.

    BWAHAHAHA! i canceled my visa the moment sony kinda, sorta announced they had been hacked.
    Sony has left millions of peoples credit cards at risk by not announcing this sooner. Theres no way they didn't see this as a huge obvious possibility when they knew that personal information was stolen which they likely knew immediately after the hack.

    @Ouroboroschoke

    If you read the agreement about your information you provide, you would know that SONY and any other company for that matter is not capable of protecting your information. At no time in history has personal information had any form of protection outside of isolationism.

    Six days of not knowing if anyones information was stolen, or it could have been six days for the public to be aware of what actions SONY is taking. Again you are blinded by your upbringing and unable to think for yourself. Proof is in who you hold blame to. SONY is not to blame, but George Hotz (GoeHot) is. He made the Jailbreak public, and Sony was right to attempt to sue him over it. Guess everyone at Anon wanted new conmputers, so they attacked the network anyway.

    Hay Kevin Pereira, have you thanked your best bud George Hotz for jailbreaking the PS3. One small action leads to many large acts. Guess you weren't thinking when you had your interview with him and sounded as if your condoned his action publicly. Down with structure take it to the man. The man is never the victim just the bystanders who play by the rules. The recent hacking of the PSN is a direct result from George's jailbreak. Without the information he riped from the system these hackers would have never reached the magnatude of stolen information that they did. Oh and as to George Hotz not condoning stealing, it looks now like he orchistrated the whole affair.

    Despite how i'm not taking this out too hard on Sony, it won't change the fact that Sony is in some deep caca now.. they're going to have trust issues as much as I already think they realize.. I wonder how they'll make it up to their fans.

    Well good thing I don't use my credit card or gave them my cards info. Stupid hackers let us have fun with our networks. Well can you blame Sony for this at least they are trying to get the problem solved so that we can get to playing on the network.
