playstation network psn logoAccording to Sony's Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, Patrick Seybold an "unauthorized person" has obtained PlayStation Network Users' personal information, including name, address, password, login. According to the company, it's possible that credit card data has been accessed as well. In other words, things just went from a inconvenience to a potential catastrophe for millions of PlayStation 3 users.

According to Sony:

"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

Sony's full statement is under the cut.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

  1. Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
  2. Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
  3. Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

You may wish to visit the web site of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General, and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone (877) 566-7226; or www.ncdoj.gov. We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at 1-800-345-7669 should you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
Sony Computer Entertainment and Sony Network Entertainment

We'll have more info as it develops.

I love all you people saying "OMG wah wah it's SONYS responsibility to proctect MY INFORMATION wah wah." Shut up. It's YOUR information. It is first and foremost YOUR responsibility. You gave it to Sony. If you hadn't well, there would be nothing to worry about. You people act like youre all entitled to something. Give me this, give me that, compensate me, this is Sony's fault blah blah.

Fall off of the world please.

My information is on there too. Am I blaming Sony or asking for some ridiculous compensation? No. I'm gonna take proper actions with my personal info to protect it. Hey, guess what? Here's a little secret. Sony isn't YOUR personal guardian. Gasp! I know, it's hard to swallow. So shut up, man up, realize that these things happen and take care of your own stuff. You're not entitled to anything just because you are you. Get over yourselves.

Why are people mad at Sony? That would be like going up to someone who just got shot, and yell at them for not being able to heal themselves. Seriously people, leave Sony alone.

    LOL...

First off... you can't just blame hackers. How many DOD or NSA or CIA hacks have happened? not many, because of the incredible walls of security that overlap. They have ridiculous budgets for security They have to watch out for insiders... Hackers will always hack, and no matter how pissed off anyone gets, that won't change. Grow up

Second.... who is to blame? Sony for offering this kind of service for free. They can't afford to staff the hundreds of people who do nothing but troll software and networks for vulnerabilities. Microsoft does it, any respectable fortune 500 company does it. Quit whining about your info getting jacked if you want free online service. You DO get what you pay for.

SONY and SONY alone! is responsible for this. Not some overweight 30 year old with no life who was made fun of in school and wants to get revenge and feel powerful. If Sony is so confident that they are better than Microsoft or Nintendo, then they need to charge for the service and create more jobs for IT security Experts to adequately protect their customers.

Sorry to be so blunt, but this is just the harsh truth.

There's no use in trashing Sony. They had great security, hackers are just smart. They use their knowledge for bad instead of good. I have a credit card on my account, I'll be pissed if it's taken. But I won't be pissed at Sony, I'll be pissed at the douche hacker who stole it.

People need to realize that they are never 100% secure, the hacker found that tiny hole that was practically impossible to see and exploited it. What I'm more pissed about is that this happened over my Spring break. I'm just happy that Sony is rebuilding it from the bottom up. I'd rather know my info is secure than play over my break prone to another attack.

I know a dude personally who is one of these "super hackers". I jokingly accused him of being Anonymous. He quickly denied that he was but said that Anonymous had asked for his help in taking PSN down O.o

I seriously cannot believe all of the people defending Sony! How much of a complete sheep can you people be?! WOW! The hackers are to blame, yes, but so is Sony. Their security was so crappy, 19 year olds were able to hack in and bring down the ENTIRE network AND have access to 70 million users' information! Come on people! I enjoyed my PS3 (when it worked), but this is completely ridiculous! This is also not the consumers' fault, as the few incompetent kids are saying. This is a new low for Sony, and we need to make sure this doesn't happen again. Any person who has had a problem with a Sony product can tell you how arrogant and careless they are about their own devices. This is our chance to change this. If you take a look at this sad excuse for a statement Sony released, you'll notice they can't even apologize, they're so arrogant. They know this will blow over because people are going to let it. They're screwing us all over! Don't take this from them! They don't care about you!

I Think this is both sony and the hackers fault i mean going after hackers is like playing with a hornets nest you just dont do it. Sure the xbox and other online services could be hacked but they haven't cuz they are not as arrogant as sony. If Sony would have try to higher the hackers that broke the code and get them on their side then maybe this wouldn't have happened, but they try and sue them instead. I'm just curious, why haven't a hacking group came out and say that they have done it.

Forget not being able to connect online or play COD multiplayer, we are talking about my credit info (potentially) being hacked. This ain't a game, and why are people here arguing about Xbox and PS3? Please grow up and realize this is bigger than what system you own.

Wow. This is not going to turn me away from Sony P.S. 3 at all.I never ever use a real credit card to buy products online Sony ,I use the pre-paid Sony money cards only. I heard about the hack attack on Sony ,their servers where under attack. I.B.M. which sold the advanced micro cell processor chip to Sony was well worth it,I.B.M. should step in and save Sony from the brink, they really should help out Sony Corporation right now. /|\^.v.^/|\---->

Wow. Ok so e-mails, billing addresses, credit card #s, login ids, and passwords. I hope everyone is taking precautions such as refreshing passwords on any common logins for other sites and requesting new account numbers for their credit cards.

This is pretty bad, 80% of blame to the hackers who did the deed and 20% of blame to Sony for inadequate security measures. lets hope Sony ups their defenses and that the hackers get bored and move on (or even better, arrested).

Good luck to everyone updating their accounts. So far no odd activity on my credit cards.
