playstation network psn logoAccording to Sony's Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, Patrick Seybold an "unauthorized person" has obtained PlayStation Network Users' personal information, including name, address, password, login. According to the company, it's possible that credit card data has been accessed as well. In other words, things just went from a inconvenience to a potential catastrophe for millions of PlayStation 3 users.

According to Sony:

"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

Sony's full statement is under the cut.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

  1. Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
  2. Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
  3. Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

I expect a hefty HEFTY fine PLUS 1 year community service PLUS 1 year jail time to whoever is responsible for hacking the PSN.

Sony is NOT to blame for this. When a bank gets robbed you don't blame the bank; You blame the robber. Same is true for this case.

The right thing for Sony to do is to do the aforementioned sanctions (Or better) for this felony. Whether it be GeoHots or Anonymous or whichever douche is responsible.

Wah wah wah. don't blame Sonny.... wah wah wah, don't blame sony. Yes I'll concede that it's not Son'ys fault for being hacked, but can we at the very least place blame where it RIGHTLY belongs for SIX DAY wait everyone has gone through for this tiny morsel of information? I own all three consoles and I can safely say that even if my credit card is okay, that my info is never going back on my ps3 ever again.

I am tired of all the people blaming Sony for this, it wasn't their fault! Wish more people could understand this!

It's was "whoever" thought it would be OK to attack Sony and steal all of our information who is at-fault. All networks have security flaws, and it's a hackers(crackers) job to find even that one back door to be able to gain access in to the network, long and the short of it. I am seriously not pissed at Sony, AT ALL. PISSED AT THE STUPID HACKER(S) THAT THINK IT'S OK TO HACK IN TO A NETWORK AND STEAL INFORMATION!

This was a personal attack on Sony and there was nothing Sony could have done to stop it. Not all companies have money to just throw around to pay hackers to find their flaws in the network and fix them.

Especially with all the people saying: It took them 6 days to tell us our information was compromised?!? Sony didn't even know about it, most likely. And even if they did or didn't, they wouldn't be able to tell you RIGHT AWAY, until they got a lawyer, etc. in place to stop all the frivolous lawsuits that would arise who think it's Sony's fault their information got taken. When, in fact, it was the hacker that stole the information, not Sony. You were also the one who put your credit card information on their servers, not Sony.

And to all the people who keep complaining that Sony still hasn't given you enough information or useless information, they have given PLENTY, and I Thank You, Sony. What more do you want people!?:

*Told you the servers got hacked, by an outside source
*Told you they are working around-the-clock, rebuilding the network to prevent future attacks
*Told you they hired a security firm to help them
*Told you that your information was compromised
*Telling you they are not sure EXACTLY when the servers will be back up (better than a time-frame and then not making that time-frame)
*Took the servers completely down before more damage could be done
*Giving you the information needed to check on your credit history/information and how to prevent future attacks to your credit

If this is not invaluable information to you, I don't know what you are smoking.

So please people, the best thing we can do is be patient as possible, and hope for the best, we are all in the same boat, and just as pissed as the next person, but not at Sony. Also, if you are having an aneurysm because the PSN is still not up, you made to rethink your life ;)

Keep up the work Sony, and just praying for the PSN to be up as soon as possible. I am still a loyal customer Sony, even though I am still a little pissed :)

that is why i never use the internet to give out personal information that is sensitive for ignorant Ahole hackers to steal. and yes they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.. i take this kind of thing personal and it would be the same as some thief coming into your home at which time i would not call the police until i have had my turn with them if you catch my drift.. anyone that will go this far and do what some bastard hackers have done to Sony needs to be put into a cell with a few gang members that can do their thing to them short of marriage. and thats not a bad idea.. marriage to some prison gangsters is just what these hackers need.. as the old saying goes. what goes around comes around.. and i do beleive in KARMA.. It's just a matter of time.. payback is a bitch !!
