According to Sony's Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, Patrick Seybold an "unauthorized person" has obtained PlayStation Network Users' personal information, including name, address, password, login. According to the company, it's possible that credit card data has been accessed as well. In other words, things just went from a inconvenience to a potential catastrophe for millions of PlayStation 3 users.
"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."
Sony's full statement is under the cut.
Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:
- Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
- Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
- Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.
We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:
U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.
We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

Everybody think of it this way. If this problem isnt solved quickly it will be with the help of other companies and agencies. And it all goes to hell I will think of it like in the movie Deep Impact were humanity had to start over. Im not gonna get all gay about it but we PSN users might just have to start over from square 1.

POWER TO THE PSN

I originally thought this had something to do with Anonymous, now I'm not so sure. Idiots cheating the system are always going to take advantage of the others. Had this been Anonymous doing this to the Sony CEOs rather than the consumers on the games servers (if that 'was' their original intention) then they could claim being a "Robin Hood". If this is them again, having pulled a switch-a-roo, I say damn them... hang them by their balls, covered in honey over a fire ant mound.

Guys don't blame Sony, it's not their fault that this happened. People who would piss off millions of PS3 users seriously got some balls, but they gotta get a friken life. Hope they get arrested and fined. And all you XBOX 360 users don't laugh till you piss yourself, your next

Due to Sony's intervention (hacking resulting in sony shutting down the network) I have discovered the following over the last week...
1) did you know we have over 6 solid full hours of sunlight outside these days? 2) i was very upset when I learned my dog died several months ago, but I failed to notice until only recently when I finally decide to refill his dog bowel 3) another big surprise when I showered today to notice i seem to have gained 20-30 pounds and a second gin, its hard to see my chumpy now! 4) I've seemed to forgotten how to masterb@te, thanks Sony for making this new & exciting again : ) 5) I've had time to pay months of over-due bills and got my water turned back on (thus the shower) thanks again Sony, 6) my parents also sent a big thanks Sony for unplugging me as they are ecstatic to hear my voice since I now have time to answer the phone. they have called off the missing person search, 7) if PSN continues to be down I might, stress, might even go out some evening and attempt to gain intercourse with a mildly attractive female, 8) and thankful for all this free time for wonderful things like type this message, maybe I'll try to find a job today : ). 9) anyone have any stats on the sudden increase of United States's GDP over the last 7 days...hmmm?
In summary, thanks Sony for Unplug Intervention and reminding me of why I buried myself in online play in the first place. I miss all you kids shouting mom jokes and making funny voices. Lets just hope online SIMS does not get hacked or else I might have to end it all.

I never seems to amaze me enough to know that when things like this happen and we hear about it all the time, no one takes their own precautions or actions to protect their own identity. We live in this ridiculous illusion that other people are responsiable for what is yours. Your indetentity and personal info is yours and you should protect it like you would protect your child (if you have one, if not, pretend). I must get those stupid cell phone smihing scams a couple times a year telling me something is wrong with my credit. #1, I have none and want none, they F$#@ up your life. #2. Ask your bank or card company how they will contact you if there is a problem.
Be proactive people and not reactive. Sure, they hold some responsibility to protect your information but come on..Is it REALLY all up to them only. I don't think so, you were raised to be an adult so act like one and take some of the blame for yourself.
