According to Sony's Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media, Patrick Seybold an "unauthorized person" has obtained PlayStation Network Users' personal information, including name, address, password, login. According to the company, it's possible that credit card data has been accessed as well. In other words, things just went from a inconvenience to a potential catastrophe for millions of PlayStation 3 users.
"If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."
Sony's full statement is under the cut.
Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:
- Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
- Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
- Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.
We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.
Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.
For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.
To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:
U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.
We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

honestly, there is literally NO system that is completely safe from hackers, no matter how much security is used. I hate hackers and think that they should find a better use of their skills, like getting a real job. Someone with their technical experience could get very well paid without running the risk of having federal agents trying to get them.

I just hope that Sony send us an Confirm email to reset our password but don't inculde Birthday date, that be A HUGE Mistake, because i Already made an account and i forgot what Birthday date i put in, i just can't lose my rare account i created, everybody really likes me

People on here are saying that we shouldn't be blaming Sony for this.
Oh really?
Should we not be blaming Sony for giving these alleged crackers (not hackers, people. Learn your terms) a SIX DAY head start on using said information? They couldn't have told us this earlier?
Or how about the fact that their system was so thoroughly violated... couldn't they have had a back up plan or better security for the MILLIONS of accounts? You'd think if several million people were trusting you with their confidential information... you'd take that pretty effing seriously.
So yes... we should blame Sony for everything they failed at in this incident. This is something they should've been prepared for but clearly weren't.

i ahve feeling that psn outage will last atleast a month and likley having users create a new psn account do to the psn rebuilding

people saying Sony should up their security than, tell that to government that cause they have the best of the best and yet still they get hacked into. 100% security is the land of big foot and peter pan. so xbox community saying $60 is saving you from not getting hacked on xbl you better see what the hell your drug supplier is giving you cause whatever it is im sure he's making good $$$ off you.

HACKERS are to blame the same hackers that say they do what they do for us. Well if u support these jerks u are a idiot because now we cant get or game on and our info may be out there for them to use. "F" them and anyone that support them, And for them XBOX fan boys out there as i recall y'all service went down for 2 weeks in 2008 and y'all pay for that HAHA at least we don't pay so it hurts less. PSN FOREVER AND YES I AM A FANBOY SO BURN IF U WANT I CAN TAKE IT IM A BIG BOY.

and that's why you make countermeasures for hackers BEFORE you get hacked.

Sony is so screwed right now, thats why I never put my credit number on my psn account. I always bought the psn cards instead. What surprises me is that after the whole thing with Geo hacking his ps3, Sony still failed to secure their customer's psn accounts. Instead they spent their time to go after one hacker that only hacked his own ps3, not his psn account. Sony decided to go sue one measly hacker, now Sony has to worry about their 70 million customers suing them for being unable to protected their customer's information.

This is ridiculous. Basically you're telling me hackers may have gotten near every single piece of my personal information, the information that I TRUSTED Sony with? I think people are certainly within their rights to be pissed at Sony rather than the hackers. It should not have been easy to get in and do this and with an effective security system it should not have happened. This is terrible Sony. Good luck regaining a fanbase large enough to compete with Microsoft now.

I had a feeling this happened. Seeing as how before the network went down, I was trying to just go onto the PS store, and I got the error message saying error: failed to add funds to your account. Also, seeing as how it had been revealed (allegedly) that Sony doesn't even encrypt credit card info when it's sending info between servers during online transactions through the PS store, as well as its recent debacle with both hacker group Annonomous, and hacker George "GeoHot" Hotz, you had to think some hacker (or hackers) had to be bold enough to see this as a potential opportunity. I do blame Sony a bit for not strengthening up its security in time to prevent something like this. But truly, I'm more pissed with the hackers. Was ready to enjoy Portal 2's CO-OP last week, but you douchebags had to come and steal people's credit card info. I truly hope that your're found in the holes that you live in, your computers and PS3's are ceased and destroyed, and you're sent to prison for so long that by the time you get out, you forget on how to use a computer. It's nice to know the complete reasoning for why Sony took down the PSN, and it's nice to know that they're doing a major fix to the PSN to make sure that this doesn't happen again. Because if this does happen again, it'd be unexcusable.

I guess it's a good thing I was forced to use the psn cards you buy at a brick&mortar store.
I deleted my card information since I couldn't buy anything, so I hope I'm not affected.

Its funny the titles says COmprimised info for PSN yet it clearly states "may have been obtained" Love reading two contradictions in a "Journalist's" post
cardinalsfan1122
The good thing is if this is anonymous or someone from anonymous they probably won't steal credit card information (it's not really their MO) But this is horrible I hope the tool who did this gets caught and fast.
