Is this the Wii 2? Nintendo has released an official statement confirming a new console, codenamed "Project Cafe", will be playable at E3 2011. No details on the new Nintendo console have been announced except for the fact that it will arrive in 2012. The company promises to announce the console's specs and more during the annual industry trade show later in June.

Here's the statement from Nintendo:

"Nintendo has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011.

We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.”

While Nintendo hasn't revealed any further details on the alleged Wii 2, which is codenamed "Project Cafe," there are a number of reports about the system's specifications, including the word from IGN's sources that the Nintendo project will "out perform the PlayStation 3's NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor. Like the Xbox 360, the system's CPU will be a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset, but the clocking speeds will be faster." Supposedly, the system will support 1080p output with the potential for stereoscopic 3D as well, granting it the additional nickname "Wii HD". Price-wise, Project Cafe is predicted to retail for between $350 and $400.

"Project Cafe" is rumored to have an interesting touchscreen controller as well, but Nintendo has remained tight lipped on the console's specifics. We've speculated on what the Wii 2 console might have inside, but what do you think is coming? A beefier console than the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, or another Wii, marketed towards a more family friendly demographic?

If the new Nintendo console's strategy is to "out-power" the major consoles on the market, it basically represents a 180 degree turn from the guiding philosophy of the Wii. The Wii was always a system designed to be less powerful, but more user-friendly and with broader appeal than the 360 and PS3.

We'll keep you updated right up to E3 (June 7-9), and, of course, our E3 coverage will be massive, featuring news, previews, videos and much, much more.

I really hope this isn't another NINTENDO!!! I was 10 back when the Nintendo came out and I really need Nintendo to make games that are not the 100th iteration of the games I played back when I was 10. Nintendo your original audience has grown up, it's time you did the same with your games. I love the fact that you translate well to kids, but I'm not a kid any more.

Wow talk about the worst kept secret ever. To be honest I would have thought that Nintendo would have annouced their new console at last year's E3. Truth is that Nintendo is in the perfect position to bring a new console to market. They will have a 1-2 year lead over both Sony and Microsoft. Most Wii owners are ready to move on to a new, more powerful system. Guess Nintendo was just waiting for sales of the Wii to start slipping. Well it's more like they have gone off a clif. I am a bit concerned about the price. If it ends up being $300 it's something I can live with.

I hope it's really an HD system and doesn't focus on Motion Controls and instead has a real Controller and games i'd want to play. I'd easily buy it if so.

Nintendo has finally released the Nintendo Wii 2, but come on can't Sony and Microsoft come out with a new console to compete with Nintendo!!!

Grrrr, I finally just bought a Wii last summer (August). Reggie said they had no plans for a new console at last years E3 (I thought). I kept putting off buying the Wii, and eventually I Thought I only NEEDED it for Skyward Sword. Once I got it, I ended up getting a few games that I love. Twilight Princess (I have it on Gamecube too), Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Metroid Prime 3 (wish they would sell the Trilogy again), Batman the Brave and the Bold and a few more. Having said all that, man I can't wait to have a good look at this thing in June. It sounds awesome. I wish I had just bought my Wii at launch...

As interested as I am in hearing more about the new console. I can't help but think that it's just going to be a stronger Wii. Nintendo has never slipped on making innovative consoles, but it seems a little early to just give up on the Wii like this. 2012 is right around the corner, and Sony and Microsoft both don't even have plans to relelase a new console until 2013 or 2014. So this may in fact actually be a good thing for Nintendo to where they can dominate the market and have a 2 to 3 year head start on the competition. Or this will blow up in their face, where consumers may think it's too soon to have another console.

I'm guessing it will still be about easy user interface and playing with the family, but they will probably add more that will appeal to the hardcore gamers as well. I hope they have less crappy third party games and Nintendo games. I am also hoping for a big change from the Wii. It was a fine console, but I lost my appeal for it after a few months. I didn't like the motion controls much for some games and I hated all the third party games. Anyways, I can't wait to see what Nintendo will do with this one!

I don't see this as a big deal. If it's great, I'll still wait to buy it.

As long as it comes with wireless N card, Hdd with sata 3, USB 3.0 and ethernet jack with gigabit, i 'll trade both my console in for it.

I wonder how Nintendo is going to compete in the online field of things. If the rumors of it being on par or surpassing the PS3 and 360 are true, then that would mean that this new console can support third party ports properly. And if Nintendo can support such ports, it would mean that it would enter the field of supporting those games in a manner similar, better , or ,if they insist on the whole friendcode thing, much worse than how the PS3 and 360 operates.

As it stands Nintendo is pretty much a total stranger to how 3rd party games get support and exclusives. This new console can potentially put them in the position to change the current " DLC exclusives" model that the other two consoles are subjected to, or fill in an entirely new niche once again much as the Wii had when it first hit shelves.

Either way though, they need to step up their online system as well as the quantity of quality titles available as it's something the Wii has been lacking...
