Is this the Wii 2? Nintendo has released an official statement confirming a new console, codenamed "Project Cafe", will be playable at E3 2011. No details on the new Nintendo console have been announced except for the fact that it will arrive in 2012. The company promises to announce the console's specs and more during the annual industry trade show later in June.
Here's the statement from Nintendo:
"Nintendo has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011.
We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.”
While Nintendo hasn't revealed any further details on the alleged Wii 2, which is codenamed "Project Cafe," there are a number of reports about the system's specifications, including the word from IGN's sources that the Nintendo project will "out perform the PlayStation 3's NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor. Like the Xbox 360, the system's CPU will be a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset, but the clocking speeds will be faster." Supposedly, the system will support 1080p output with the potential for stereoscopic 3D as well, granting it the additional nickname "Wii HD". Price-wise, Project Cafe is predicted to retail for between $350 and $400.
"Project Cafe" is rumored to have an interesting touchscreen controller as well, but Nintendo has remained tight lipped on the console's specifics. We've speculated on what the Wii 2 console might have inside, but what do you think is coming? A beefier console than the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, or another Wii, marketed towards a more family friendly demographic?
If the new Nintendo console's strategy is to "out-power" the major consoles on the market, it basically represents a 180 degree turn from the guiding philosophy of the Wii. The Wii was always a system designed to be less powerful, but more user-friendly and with broader appeal than the 360 and PS3.
We'll keep you updated right up to E3 (June 7-9), and, of course, our E3 coverage will be massive, featuring news, previews, videos and much, much more.

POLL: Will the hardware limitations of Nintendo's Wii U prevent it from being successful?

I think so, to be honest. It's basically a 360 with extra power, and Nintendo's gimmicks are over. That's why their stock tanked.

i hope they bring back Earthbound/Mother for this console :)

I also can't wait to see Mario in HD!!!!

This looks good. Can't wait till it comes out. Since Nintendo has all the momentum in E3, they should start with a bang and announce GTA 5 and try to get some other top sellers. Like trying to get MW3 or Battlefield.

so, alot of people are talking about how nintendo needs to cater to the hardcore market to survive, and i know this sounds terrible, and we all hate to hear it, but honestly, casual gamers make the video game market. if nintendo wants to survive, literally, it needs to keep this casual base, but if it wants to produce quality, it needs to make the technical leap its headind towards right now. this advancement will either make or break nintendo, and im hoping it only gets better. personaly i hope nintendo does great things, and if they combine the wii (via backwards compatibility) with this new system while moving forwards, they will cater to both casual gamers, and to "hardcore" (i hate that term) gamers.

i have not been a nintendo fan since the days of the s.n.e.s. but i don't like the i-movement eather it's to much like barny and dora plus deago all four are lame but i like the 3ds and i hated the wii i got one back in early 2009 when my part kentucky was experincing a majer blackout for eaghteen days straght but when i finaly played it i wanted kick to my oun @$$ the only nintendo product i have bought since than is the 3ds i tried the

i use the playstation portable sorry but i love the ability to change memory
and i am not into aps they are just a gimick to get kids and the
mentaly chalanged to buy them i.e. south park and my home town
if nintendo wants to do a good job they should make there next gen system
better by looking at software in place of hardware and put a dvd or blu-ray
player or something in and get rid of there special codac for pictures
i would like to put my pictures from my computer on my 3ds and console
and i am still mad at nintendo for what they did to sony back in the days of s.n.e.s. for thous that dont already know sony and nintendo made a deal back when the s.n.e.s was first launched the original playstation was to be a add on for s.n.e.s. but after sony made all of there psx units nintendo went with phelips for there graphics prosesers thats why i hope sony blows nintendo out of the watter much like they did with sega witch whent

hopefully it will be 2006 all over again, were Nintendo blew everybody out the water. I dont think Nintendo will strickly make the new wii HD with online play, Nintendo are smart, they know just an upgraded Wii wont cut it. I cant wait, only a month too go before E3, and then i can find out what date i have too start standing in line in front of bestbuy for the new wii lol

Nintendo has been after the Wii a bit..."meh" for me, but deep in my heart I hope they do well, although I won't buy their console day 1, they have miles and miles to go especially in online interaction. Only time will tell...

Good strategic move on Nintendo's part. With the probability of new Sony and Microsoft consoles coming to market in no less than 3 years, Nintendo is being proactive and getting their new system to the public when people are beginning to look for something new. Nintendo understands that with the release of motion control gaming that spans all three consoles, it needs to now show leadership and foresight on what to do next, b/c if it drags its feet, and waits to release until the other companies do, comparison's will be made, which Nintendo, who seems to try and model itself similarly to Apple, does NOT want. It needs to separate itself by staying ahead of the curve, and this early release helps them achieve that. With a release outside of the natural console cycle, Nintendo is keeping their customer base happy. If they waited until the other consoles release, they will be giving up a competitive advantage that they need. This 2012 release will further separate Nintendo from the "pack" and bring loyal fans back, without having to worry about those fans trying to decide which console they want, if they were all released at similar times. One choice is better than three. Nintendo understands this, and that is why it is a good decision to get started early.

I just hope that Nintendo brings back that old school feel. When I was young I would come home from school and turn on the 64 and play Star Fox, Legend of Zelda and Mario. I bought every Nintendo console since then, but I haven't felt that same feeling of shock and awe. I beg Nintendo to bring the feeling back with this new console.
Bring the Shock and Awe.

not a wii fan at all..excellent for the kids..im an oldskool hardcore gamer with an enormous amount of hours played on any and every system developed..with prob thousands of games..gonna give nintendo credit bc they are very creative and at this stage to announce a new system is very 'ballzy'...they know they have to bring the pain to top themselves, ps3 and xbox...prob will get ingenious and somehow figure out how to place the motion sensor already builtin to the unit, and completely come out with a brand new and advanced unit that blows us away..and so they can jack the price up to 500bux from the start..cant wait to see what they do..either way, regardless there are plenty games to play on my ps3 or 360 and computer..'Bbbring It'
