UPDATE: Sony Confirms that PSN Users' Personal Information Was Obtained By An Unauthorized Party
As of this morning, the PlayStation Network is still not functioning. According to Sony, the PSN was taken down by the company due to an "external intrusion," in other words, you can't play your PlayStation 3 online because someone apparently either tried to, or was successful at, accessing the PlayStation Network unauthorized. There is no update on when we can expect the PSN to be back up.
Here's the official statement from Sony's senior director of corporate communications and social media, Patrick Seybold:
"An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share."
While people claiming to represent hacking group Anonymous have both implicitly taken responsibility for the outage on their facebook page and denied having any involvement on their website, right now, there's no way of telling who is behind the intrusion.
It's possible that the PSN Outage that happened on April 4, for which Anonymous did take responsibility, is the real culprit here. Sony's response to the DDoS attack of a few weeks ago may have been to fight against future DDoS attacks by updating their network, and maybe part of that investigation and update involves shutting down the PSN for maintenance.
That possibility fits in perfectly with the most recent statement the company has issued, particularly this sentence:
"we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th."
Note the "we turned off" part of that sentence. Sony seems to be making it clear that no one "took down" the PSN but Sony itself, which, if we take Sony at their word, could imply this was not a DDoS attack, and thus, probably not the work of Anonymous, as a collective. It could be individual "members" of Anonymous, though, working independently, as Anonymous itself has said.
In a sense, the best case scenario is that Anonymous is behind the outage. In the past, when Anonymous targeted a site or network, they generally used a Distributed Denial of Service attack -- in other words, orchestrating networks of computers to "hit" servers with info requests all at once. The service is then overloaded and goes down -- bam, network offline temporarily. Think of it as a brute force attack with a sledgehammer. It kills the network, but in a sense doesn't "hack" it. No unauthorized access is obtained.
While I'm sure Sony has a ton of encryption and security processes in place to prevent anyone from causing real damage to their network and protect users' information, even the possibility of a more sophisticated, targeted hack of the PSN is troubling. After all, Anonymous members having a laugh at the expense of gamers and Sony is an inconvenience and a pain, but professional, criminal hackers could potentially cause much more serious problems. Let's hope it's nothing of that sort.
The bottom line for users: The PlayStation Network is down. We don't know why. Sorry for the bad news, but there's no word now on when the PSN will be back up.
Stay tuned to G4tv.com for updates on this story as they develop.

With all that is going on in Japan and Sony being a Japanese company I would not be surprised if they are just moving shop. Media is keeping Japans Nuclear Reactor (won't let me post city name) under wraps and I am sure Sony doesn t want to get caught in a fallout. Its probably easier to tell the world your identity has been stolen than the truth that the radiation is out of control.

Truth be told, i do not believe the group Anonymous did this. Group members, sure. But not the group. There is no real reason for an attack on the PSN. They don't need your credit card info. They are not thieves. They are people who are standing up for what they believe in. When the wikileaks issue arose, they attacked BofA. If you were going to try and get financial info, wouldn't you do it then? And they didn't even hack them. They just brought the site down. I can't say for sure who it was or why. But saying it was Anonymous is nothing more than Sony trying to save face. BTW, Anonymous does claim all the attacks they do... and they haven't said that it was them...

Sony s online service has been down since Wednesday as a result of an external intrusion, with reports later emerging that the downtime may have been due to a firmware hack that allowed folk to pirate PSN content using fake credit card numbers.

Yea it sucks having the PSN down, but I find it funny how every time it goes down, everyone wants Sony to give them compensation for not being able to use there FREE service. Now games like dcuo compensation would be understandable since we do have to pay for it, same with PSN+ members which in all honesty I have psn+, I do not expect compensation, just information on when it will be back up.. But in away Sony really has no obligation to issue any compensation if it's not there fault. That would be like telling your internet provider you want compensation because some jack hole where to somehow bring down the internet everywhere in the world. Everyone argues that it is the companies fault for being hacked, infected, ect... and people say that they should "compensate" when its an outside source causing the issue and not actually the companies fault. Just keep in mind, even though you may have an anti-virus program on your computer, it doesn't mean you are completely virus free.

I totally agree with One True Gamer 100%!
I have all the systems, so I can go online elsewhere...but online isn't EVERYTHING! Last time I checked, you can still play games offline. Well...except for MAG, DCUO, Warhawk, and quite a few others...hmm...okay, so it does suck! 0_o
So, this is what I purpose to Sony for what they can do to please their customers...
#1 Give everyone one free month of PSNPlus!
#2 Give DCUO players one free month of online play.
#3 During the firmware & PSN updates, be sure to include the infamous Other OS mode, since you jumped the gun thinking the hackers would use it to perform the current mods. By taking this feature away, you played yourselves, and you played your customers who bought it because it was a selling point to them.
#4 And lastly, give us back 100% Backward Compatibility just like before with the older 60GB models. You played your customers again by taking this feature away, only to lured them towards an inferior version with more HDD space. Little do most know they can go to Best Buy, Amazon, or where ever...and buy a 500GB (2.5 sata) drive and put that bad boy in for under $60 - $80. Then you have enough nerve to re-sell those same games that gamers already own through PSN, just so they can play them in sub-par HD...a shame really, when there are emulators out "there" that has graphic filters and run @ 60fps / 1080p for PC!
PS3 - Built with cell technology, it does everything...that's your slogan...
I say, stop you're lying Sony, or prove it. You can start with the four things I just mentioned.
I kinda went off-track with my little rant, but whatever!

This isn't the last time but in fact one of many more hacking issues to come for Sony.
ONETRUEGAMER
Sony should just admit they got their asses hacked and are having a hard time !!! Their's no maintenance or anything like that because sony would've warned us about this in time.People shouldn't complain because they're not paying for this mediocre service at all. Only the psnplus users should complain . Although it does suck not being able to play killzone3 or socom4 online all this time ,it's still a free service. Oh well good thing I also have a pc and xbox360 to play online with !!!
