Did Anonymous Take Down The PlayStation Network?

Sony Confirms Premium PSN Service, Details

Sorry, PS3 gamers, The PlayStation Network is still out of commission as of this morning and what caused the outage to the PS3's online service remains unknown, leading to speculation that hacker group Anonymous is responsible.

As we reported earlier this week, the PSN went down on late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Sony issued a statement on Thursday on its European blog, referencing the possibility of "attacks" on the network. Then later said it could be a "day or two" until it comes back up. Suspicion immediately fell upon Anonymous, a loose affiliation of nameless hackers and internet denizens.

A few weeks ago, Anonymous "declared war" on the PlayStation Network due to the legal battle between Sony and PS3 hacker GeoHot. The case was settled, and it was presumed the "war" was called off. Perhaps not...

Last night, a member of a Facebook page created in the name of Anonymous posted an update that seems to take credit for the PlayStation Network's outage. It reads:

"Take a break from online gaming for a while.....it will help your skills, your health, and your emotional levels, which by the way are a bit out of order if they are being shackled by the PSN being down. We have no qualms about our actions, even though it may affect fellow anonymous or supporters... we hope they understand the bigger picture."

With a more recent post reading:

"Art thou infuriated?"

Lest you think this proves Anonymous is behind the PSN outage, consider the following statement, posted last night on an "Anonymous" website under the heading "For Once We Didn't Do it":

"While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps wa not related to this incident and takes no responsibility for it. A more likely explanation is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous' previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is actually an internal problem with the companies servers."

So are Anonymous behind the problems with the PlayStation Network? It's impossible to say. Because Anonymous has no real structure or hierarchy, there's no way to tell if any statement issued in the name of the group actually represents the views of the group. Anyone can claim to speak for Anonymous, so nothing "it" says really means anything... until it does.

The PlayStation Network has been down now for over 24 hours, and it has been over 16 hours since Sony has issued any kind of statement on the matter, which leaves only questions... and a lot of free time for PlayStation 3 users. If you're wondering what you can still do with your PlayStation 3, check out this guide I put together.

So what do you think is behind the outage? Any theories?

I dunno what's worse, the fact that PSN is out or having to hear about it over and over again and have these xbots troll till the cows come home, and am i the only one appalled when i see comments from guys that claim that don't take sides cheer about the fact that PSN went down either from an unknown cause or from anon? i say to them "some neutral gamer you are" and i'm not hating on someone because they want to own multiple consoles if you want to that's fine, but the ones that brag about being neutral on these posts that grind my gears and to them i say good luck cause i'm not falling for that again. -_-

Everyone Stop over-reacting. Its like the newest flu strand, everyone is screaming franticly like its dooms day. Sure games i like such as DC Universe i cant play, but im not giving up ps3 all together. Also we play online (except DCUO) for free so 1 or 2 days isn't bad. Finally, this may be off subject but who cares about Call of Duty anymore? The franchise has gone downhill since MW2's release. Every year the new one comes out and its the exact same as the last one except they add a new completely overpowered gun. Those are the 2 things bothering me about forms right now.

Somebody needs to go down to Glen Rock, New Jersey and punch the real person at fault here in his face. We all know this is George Hotz related. It's quite possible that this is all a cause of his exploit. Hackers are using the PS3 to attack the network and cause these ddos attacks. I for one know if I ever see him in person his ass is grass!

this is a real problem...for gamers who rely on online play and fames as well. This is why it is important to have long and/or non repetitive single player. Since mk released...I've literally only had 6 online matches...I'm to busy w the challenge tower. Have beat arcade lader w the top 4 characters and will start story mode after challenge tower. on a side note....cyber subzero gave me a bit of a problem lol

Of course it was Anonymous. They are just saying they didn't do it to get some people back on their side.

My netflix account is pretty much null and void for the moment thanks to this little event. But it's ok. I'm not that affected. I don't support the actions of the SCEA in relation to the Geohot situation. At any rate, it's saving me the 10 bucks I would have spent on that Ghostbusters downloadable. Besides, I'd rather be playing D&D.

Ok ok I know I am late to this, but I thought it was another isolated problem for me, this whole inability to sign in at first. But as time past I just thought I was going crazy, because my internet and wi-fi on my PS3 and 360 were both working, but now I know somebody just shut it down. Now I am not the biggest online player and I still have access to my trophies so I am not to bummed out about those aspects, but I am a man who enjoys purchasing games and demos from the PS store as a plus member (which I hope they extend my membership a while longer to compensate for this time) and I have been unable to do such for a while, so I am a little bummed out about that, but yeah I definitely understand some peoples' points on here about wanna come home and unwind with some videogames and some online play against a buddy of their, I mean who wouldn't want to that? So yeah I hope who ever did this gets over themselves soon and always the PSN to be back up soon, but wouldn't it be funny if Sony was responsible for this as some kind of marketing plan for a new game (not sure what game though) or a social experiment?

Anon is smart by not claiming resposibilitly on this. When it goes to court they have plausible deniability
