Sorry, PS3 gamers, The PlayStation Network is still out of commission as of this morning and what caused the outage to the PS3's online service remains unknown, leading to speculation that hacker group Anonymous is responsible.
As we reported earlier this week, the PSN went down on late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Sony issued a statement on Thursday on its European blog, referencing the possibility of "attacks" on the network. Then later said it could be a "day or two" until it comes back up. Suspicion immediately fell upon Anonymous, a loose affiliation of nameless hackers and internet denizens.
A few weeks ago, Anonymous "declared war" on the PlayStation Network due to the legal battle between Sony and PS3 hacker GeoHot. The case was settled, and it was presumed the "war" was called off. Perhaps not...
Last night, a member of a Facebook page created in the name of Anonymous posted an update that seems to take credit for the PlayStation Network's outage. It reads:
"Take a break from online gaming for a while.....it will help your skills, your health, and your emotional levels, which by the way are a bit out of order if they are being shackled by the PSN being down. We have no qualms about our actions, even though it may affect fellow anonymous or supporters... we hope they understand the bigger picture."
With a more recent post reading:
"Art thou infuriated?"
Lest you think this proves Anonymous is behind the PSN outage, consider the following statement, posted last night on an "Anonymous" website under the heading "For Once We Didn't Do it":
"While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps wa not related to this incident and takes no responsibility for it. A more likely explanation is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous' previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is actually an internal problem with the companies servers."
So are Anonymous behind the problems with the PlayStation Network? It's impossible to say. Because Anonymous has no real structure or hierarchy, there's no way to tell if any statement issued in the name of the group actually represents the views of the group. Anyone can claim to speak for Anonymous, so nothing "it" says really means anything... until it does.
The PlayStation Network has been down now for over 24 hours, and it has been over 16 hours since Sony has issued any kind of statement on the matter, which leaves only questions... and a lot of free time for PlayStation 3 users. If you're wondering what you can still do with your PlayStation 3, check out this guide I put together.
So what do you think is behind the outage? Any theories?

HA!! Honestly, no matter what brought this around could have been anything, hackers maybe, serious updates maybe, maybe Sony just doesn't care, I mean 97% of their users use it for free right? But to say that Sony should stop Play Station is total BS, why would they stop? The only people who say this are the Microsoft fan-boys, I had a 360 once, got a PS3 for inFamous, went back to my 360 and said "WTF am i doing with this?!?!?" Burned my 360 the next day, so to say that Sony is done makes no sense. In the long run the only game console I see possibly burning out is the Xbox, as long as no more Halo games are made, i mean, what else is a 360 good for?

Reps to the guys who hacked PSN it might be the coolest thing that has happened in gaming yet it shows how much Sony pays attention-"NONE" but shame on whoever did it for not doing something useful like hacking Microsoft's Xbox live if you want to make a statement do it on something people pay for, not the free playstation network. No one knows the intent of the hack or who did it for sure all i know is we can't blame this one on PETA.....yet, look at it this way we can all go outside to remember what outside actually looks like it's good for you just don't take cover in the mall and run through it with a bat thinking that it is actually invaded with zombies.

Have been reading around that the cause for the PSN outage is Japan-related. Some people claim an issue in Japan wouldn't affect PSN world wide. I don't know what to believe. Here's a link to one of the random sites that came up when I googled for comments about Japan being the cause:

If I'm Sony and it's an internal glitch I don't know what story i go with.
I mean are you a company that can't protect your selfs against attacks when 'War' is declared or are you a company that can't write script correctly.

This is so awesome of Anonymous. They couldn't of done like guerilla warfare or something? Magnatize/EMP Sony buildings? Messing with innocents isn't cool - you're crossing the lines dudes.
Seriously, Anonymous just entered "Generic Pokemon Villain who think they're right" territory(Most recently Team Plasma, but there's Galatic, Rocket...)
Not cool.

Now the Sony is charging for PSN they should someday be able to afford the maintenance and upgrades that's required.

It makes no sense that if they were motivated by personal ill-will toward games, and the gaming culture that they would attack the smaller of the online gaming communities. This "attack" to me was not for say the better of the gaming community, but rather a personal grudge against Sony shrouded in pretty words to cover up that simple fact.

Man Mortal Kombat comes out and this happens
.....Well online fighting is out for the day apparently.....Mortal Kombat pulled a Fatality on the network I guess lol.....Flawless victory!!!!!!
