Sorry, PS3 gamers, The PlayStation Network is still out of commission as of this morning and what caused the outage to the PS3's online service remains unknown, leading to speculation that hacker group Anonymous is responsible.
As we reported earlier this week, the PSN went down on late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Sony issued a statement on Thursday on its European blog, referencing the possibility of "attacks" on the network. Then later said it could be a "day or two" until it comes back up. Suspicion immediately fell upon Anonymous, a loose affiliation of nameless hackers and internet denizens.
A few weeks ago, Anonymous "declared war" on the PlayStation Network due to the legal battle between Sony and PS3 hacker GeoHot. The case was settled, and it was presumed the "war" was called off. Perhaps not...
Last night, a member of a Facebook page created in the name of Anonymous posted an update that seems to take credit for the PlayStation Network's outage. It reads:
"Take a break from online gaming for a while.....it will help your skills, your health, and your emotional levels, which by the way are a bit out of order if they are being shackled by the PSN being down. We have no qualms about our actions, even though it may affect fellow anonymous or supporters... we hope they understand the bigger picture."
With a more recent post reading:
"Art thou infuriated?"
Lest you think this proves Anonymous is behind the PSN outage, consider the following statement, posted last night on an "Anonymous" website under the heading "For Once We Didn't Do it":
"While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps wa not related to this incident and takes no responsibility for it. A more likely explanation is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous' previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is actually an internal problem with the companies servers."
So are Anonymous behind the problems with the PlayStation Network? It's impossible to say. Because Anonymous has no real structure or hierarchy, there's no way to tell if any statement issued in the name of the group actually represents the views of the group. Anyone can claim to speak for Anonymous, so nothing "it" says really means anything... until it does.
The PlayStation Network has been down now for over 24 hours, and it has been over 16 hours since Sony has issued any kind of statement on the matter, which leaves only questions... and a lot of free time for PlayStation 3 users. If you're wondering what you can still do with your PlayStation 3, check out this guide I put together.
So what do you think is behind the outage? Any theories?

I wonder what Sony or PSN plans to do for the people that play DC Universe Online. Games like this can only be played online and have an online subscription fee. I do not think it's ok for people to pay for something they can't use! I hope Sony or PSN realizes this and compensates these people.

What I find to be even more ridiculous than "Anon" is the fact that people are actually trying to justify the actions of these people (or person), okay if "anon" took out XBL and WoW server then it would be a problem right? I don't play online but I have a problem with some one taking my luxury away and saying I need to take a break from something I hardly play. Yes this is about principal. Anon is a moron, if you try to justify this you too are a moron. I mean is the gaming community so far gone, to the point where they start cheering for a company with beyond decent games that has helped the gaming industry as a whole find a new audience to fail? I really think many of you have sunk to a new low. And you do not need online to enjoy a great video game. Disappointed in a lot of you but what do you care? You're hiding behind your keyboard, like the big man/woman you are.

Regardless of the truth, Sony looks like a bunch of inept morons. They're dealing with the issue like punks, and I, for one, think that it's pretty sad.
I've been a PS owner since the PS1 in the '90's... Now I'm a new XBox owner.
1. Sony is Japanese... Microsoft is American...
2. I get to fight for Prestige 15 all over again.
3. Way better connection to XBox Live than PSN (if and when PSN works!)

screw hackers, how is this helping? only thing thats gonna come out of this is a surcharge on psn for people who just want to play a GAME
Lord_Ruinous
Like I've said before, not being able to play online for a few days is no big deal. I've got a house to tend to, cars to work on, and women to chase after. Plus, I still have a Mass Effect 2 file to work on.
zerorobocop
yes i think it was a group of hackers that did this to psn. Theirs always that group of people who have to ruin everything for everyone. I hope that sony files a law suit against those hackers so they learn their leasson.
BananakinSkygrrl
Honestly, it's really pathetic for people to do something like this (if it is in fact hackers). The bigger picture here isn't about Anonymous' ridiculous "war" with Sony, it's about the idiotic people who take these actions without any remorse for the consumers that pay hundreds of dollars for these Sony products. The audacity of people disgust me.

@deadfish
credit cards are unnecessary, as they sell those scratch off cards worth 20-40 and 50 dollars. maybe its just because im canadian hearing about americans constantly abusing credit cards but ill never own one.
that and i dislike the idea of credit in general.
hell, i keep a prepaid mastercard if i really want to order something online.

they are legion, for they are many, yet they are one
DjSkizzo
you can still watch netflix on your ps3. go into Netflix and as it loads the screen will appear to sign in to psn. hit x to sign and it will say error and sign you out. hit circle to go back to netflix and should load up. it may take a couple of times of doing this but it works just fine
Straight Noobin
I still have XBL. Suckers
deadfishinthesea
hang the people who did this from a ant tree with peter pan peanut butter spread all over there body and look the other way for 3 days.
just think all the credit cards ps3 has of you all tucked away in there vault scary thought?
think about it if there was no ps3 or xbox where would we be?
i have seen all the boosters on black ops they have terrible records
even when cheating they suck.
PokeyFrantzen

Fatality!!!!!

reps to the guys who hacked PSN it might be the coolest thing that has happened in gaming yet it shows how much Sony pays attention-"NONE" but shame on whoever did it for not doing something useful like hacking Microsoft's Xbox live if you want to make a statement do it on something people pay for, not the free playstation network. No one knows the intent of the hack or who did it for sure all i know is we can't blame this one on PETA.....yet, look at it this way we can all go outside to remember what outside actually looks like it's good for you just don't take cover in the mall and run through it with a bat thinking that it is actually invaded with zombies.
