Did Anonymous Take Down The PlayStation Network?

Sony Confirms Premium PSN Service, Details

Sorry, PS3 gamers, The PlayStation Network is still out of commission as of this morning and what caused the outage to the PS3's online service remains unknown, leading to speculation that hacker group Anonymous is responsible.

As we reported earlier this week, the PSN went down on late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Sony issued a statement on Thursday on its European blog, referencing the possibility of "attacks" on the network. Then later said it could be a "day or two" until it comes back up. Suspicion immediately fell upon Anonymous, a loose affiliation of nameless hackers and internet denizens.

A few weeks ago, Anonymous "declared war" on the PlayStation Network due to the legal battle between Sony and PS3 hacker GeoHot. The case was settled, and it was presumed the "war" was called off. Perhaps not...

Last night, a member of a Facebook page created in the name of Anonymous posted an update that seems to take credit for the PlayStation Network's outage. It reads:

"Take a break from online gaming for a while.....it will help your skills, your health, and your emotional levels, which by the way are a bit out of order if they are being shackled by the PSN being down. We have no qualms about our actions, even though it may affect fellow anonymous or supporters... we hope they understand the bigger picture."

With a more recent post reading:

"Art thou infuriated?"

Lest you think this proves Anonymous is behind the PSN outage, consider the following statement, posted last night on an "Anonymous" website under the heading "For Once We Didn't Do it":

"While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps wa not related to this incident and takes no responsibility for it. A more likely explanation is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous' previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is actually an internal problem with the companies servers."

So are Anonymous behind the problems with the PlayStation Network? It's impossible to say. Because Anonymous has no real structure or hierarchy, there's no way to tell if any statement issued in the name of the group actually represents the views of the group. Anyone can claim to speak for Anonymous, so nothing "it" says really means anything... until it does.

The PlayStation Network has been down now for over 24 hours, and it has been over 16 hours since Sony has issued any kind of statement on the matter, which leaves only questions... and a lot of free time for PlayStation 3 users. If you're wondering what you can still do with your PlayStation 3, check out this guide I put together.

So what do you think is behind the outage? Any theories?

psn being down is not the end of the world. you can do other things with the console. now im not a ps3 owner, but i have not put my 360 on xbl in well over a year, and i dont plan to. but i have fun though. thats bcuz my friends leave their house. we can move around and play games anywhere. we dont need any online. bcuz we have real friends.

as for anonymous.... if sony thinks it was their right to make an example out of george hotz, they anon is free to make an example out of sony. dont do anything if you wont want it done to yourself. be the example sony. the ps4 might come out a lot better bcuz of these problems right now. you never could tell...

How about playing games WITHOUT multiplayer in it? Or at least going through a single player campaign?

For those of you who don't know, Anon would say if they were behind this. They gain nothing by denying it. If you honestly think that they are worried about the laws in a country that some of them don't even live in, you are wrong. Plus, it is against their own rules to hurt consumers and they already apologized for when they did bring PSN down for a day.

P.S. I'm not an Anon. Just using my brain and trying to get all the facts.

I just want the psn to resync my trophies. I bought a new ps3 and when i put a game in the new system all my trophies for that game reset to zero. I just need to resync to get my trophies back. Why anyone wants to hack the psn is beyond me. Probably some pissed off gamer who couldn't win online so he/she decided to take the psn down to "show us all". lol. Hackers need to be caned and their systems broken over their heads

Well with anon coming out and claiming they did it, I for one am pretty damned furious. not because I lose my PSN (obv I have a pc i can game on to)

But for the simple fact that they didn't think it through. WTH are people so smart doing not using thier brains ? W/e they do to sony is irrelevant. From my understanding they're attacking the PSN due to sony's less than clear practices in an attempt to teach them a lesson.

This is epic fail, not only is it not going to change the way that any of the companies work other than making them more anal retentive, it only really damages us users who are innocent in the entire case.

What makes them think they have the right to even involve this many innocent people to try and ''teach sony a lesson'' ? Truely wish I could meet the anon group just once so I could break each and every one of thier jaws for just going about it half assed and leaving everyone from seniors who've just learned to turn thier system on, to 5 yars olds who dont even know what's going on. I want u to think about it anon, not only are u delcaring war on a singular node of a much larger beast, the majority of the people affected aren't even involved and dont really care.
