Did Anonymous Take Down The PlayStation Network?

Sony Confirms Premium PSN Service, Details

Sorry, PS3 gamers, The PlayStation Network is still out of commission as of this morning and what caused the outage to the PS3's online service remains unknown, leading to speculation that hacker group Anonymous is responsible.

As we reported earlier this week, the PSN went down on late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. Sony issued a statement on Thursday on its European blog, referencing the possibility of "attacks" on the network. Then later said it could be a "day or two" until it comes back up. Suspicion immediately fell upon Anonymous, a loose affiliation of nameless hackers and internet denizens.

A few weeks ago, Anonymous "declared war" on the PlayStation Network due to the legal battle between Sony and PS3 hacker GeoHot. The case was settled, and it was presumed the "war" was called off. Perhaps not...

Last night, a member of a Facebook page created in the name of Anonymous posted an update that seems to take credit for the PlayStation Network's outage. It reads:

"Take a break from online gaming for a while.....it will help your skills, your health, and your emotional levels, which by the way are a bit out of order if they are being shackled by the PSN being down. We have no qualms about our actions, even though it may affect fellow anonymous or supporters... we hope they understand the bigger picture."

With a more recent post reading:

"Art thou infuriated?"

Lest you think this proves Anonymous is behind the PSN outage, consider the following statement, posted last night on an "Anonymous" website under the heading "For Once We Didn't Do it":

"While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps wa not related to this incident and takes no responsibility for it. A more likely explanation is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous' previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is actually an internal problem with the companies servers."

So are Anonymous behind the problems with the PlayStation Network? It's impossible to say. Because Anonymous has no real structure or hierarchy, there's no way to tell if any statement issued in the name of the group actually represents the views of the group. Anyone can claim to speak for Anonymous, so nothing "it" says really means anything... until it does.

The PlayStation Network has been down now for over 24 hours, and it has been over 16 hours since Sony has issued any kind of statement on the matter, which leaves only questions... and a lot of free time for PlayStation 3 users. If you're wondering what you can still do with your PlayStation 3, check out this guide I put together.

So what do you think is behind the outage? Any theories?

and people said i have a small phalus for riding a sportbike.....we should just start an un-stoppable list of rumors about anon, sort of like chuck norris only not nearly as cool. like, did you know? collectively, the members of anonymous has only had sexual encounters with a biologically alive person once.

i don't play online games often but do get content, demos and ps3 updates. who ever is behind it is only hurting us gamers. yes it hurts the people of psn, but they have so much money coming in that this outage is only change in the pockets. for all we know a disgrunteled worker is the cause of the outage.

Sony was just a target this time and i hope it gets back up soon. but to everyone that is waiting for the PSN to get back online just wait it will be fixed soon.

This really hasn't effected me much. I have great single player games for my playstation. I actually got around to beating a few games i stopped playing because of black ops.

I'll admit i was mad beyond point when i found psn down ( no zombies ='[ ) But i realized there is always going to be a problem in life just wait for it to come back on, So Ive been hitting up story mode on all my old games that i neglected since black ops came out, getting those trophies i left behind the first time, and its actually been working , yea i still want PSN back up but i rather they handle what they need to handle first instead of going through another "maintenance" after another

Well as an independant artist I'd say on average I spend at least 8 hours working for every hour I spend playing my PS3 or Xbox, and most of the games I play are offline single players anyway.

Well I dont know who did this or why the PSN is still down but only thing i am losing is updating my Trophies.
I wish I could complain, but its really hard to complain at something you use for free. I like the idea of Playstation Plus but this really makes you think that maybe Sony should charge for online play. I mean they really do need to hire people who can actually take care of the Network properly and a small fee to play online like Xboxlive would work out great. I mean Playstation has some exclusive online games like DCUniverse and MAG, those players are the ones that are suffering and I am sure they are Plus members too. So I guess I am saying Id rather pay for something to make sure it works, leave the free users to their Trophy updates and PSN stores and stuff.

I am not for console wars but Xboxlive Users do have a point in this case, paying for online really does have benefits. The only problem I had with Xboxlive was when my dog chewed the Ethernet cord and when my 360 got the Red Rings of Death. But its the Xbox Support thats the problem besides RRoD when it comes to a 360.

So overall there is benefits in paying to play online and I hope that it does go up soon, I am waiting for FF4 Complete to go up on the PSN so I can get it.

As for the PS3 techs who are trying to fix it, keep up the hard work, we know sony is not to blame.

Good thing i have xbox live as well as ps3 witch is better for online multiplayer anyway ... and if it is anonymous shame on them just because they have a petty resentment toward playstation thats no reason to do anything to people who use ps3/ psn that have nothing to do with the lawsuit hackers dont want to get sued then don't hack if youknow something is wrong and do it anyway then be prepared to suffer the consequences and the fact that they hide whoe they are as "anonymous" means they are themselves cowards and afraid of getting caught and know what they do is illegal grow up be a man and accept responsibilily for your actions
