It's Earth Day! So what did you get the planet? If your answer is "nothing," then you'd better run out and get something. Suggested gift ideas include turning off every light in the room, not using your gigantic can of aerosol hairspray, and walking to the 7-11 a block away instead of driving your car. The planet will be eternally grateful, and there's nothing worse than trying to live on a planet that hates you. Talk about awkward.
Here's just one of G4's many presents to the planet, our list of favorite green video games and green characters. With an emphasis on the green. Combine this with the we energy-saving night light installed in the bathroom here, and we're set for several Earth Days. Hopefully. Please don't go all 2012 on us next year, Planet Earth. Read on for the list of pixelated greenery that keep you in the green all weekend.

Luigi
This poor guy has had to play to play second banana to his brother Mario for all of his life, and he's only been able to step into the sunshine on his own a very few times. It's high time we focsed on Luigi and put Mario in the backseat for awhile. Yes, he's not pigmented green, but green is his signature color, and that makes him okay in our book. Luigi can take us through the galaxy anytime.
This game manages to take one of our favorite bands and cram them into video game form, which is almost always a good thing. With a stellar song list and a fantastic career mode, you can virtually live the life of a rocker, and see how things all began. Like The Beatles: Rock Band before it, this game injects you directly into rock and roll, only this time around the music is a lot more current.

The Incredible Hulk
Forget the cheesy but lovable television series with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferigno, and ignore the way the Hulk has been tossed around from movie franchise to movie franchise. This big green guy was made for one thing: destruction and devastation. The best way for him to dish that out is to allow you to take the controls and SMASH. There was the fairly decent Hulk game based on Ang Lee's 2003 film, but the best Hulk game is The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Seriously, Marvel, Disney, whoever: remake this thing pronto.
Sonic the Hedgehog is coming back in Sonic: Generations, which puts both Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic in the same game. And what would a Sonic the Hedgehog game be without Green Hill Zone? This iconic level is one of the mainstays of the Sonic series, and it's been given an overhaul that you can peep in this new gameplay video. After all the Sonic games that came out last year, Generations looks like it's giving Green Hill Zone the love is deserves. Plus, does that blinging ring collection sound ever get old?

Green Lantern
This guy gets props for putting both the word green and the color green in his alter ego, and he has an entire planet out in the galaxy that thrives on the stuff. Normally, Green Lantern isn't the first person that springs to mind when you talk about video games, but with the upcoming film and the game adaptation Green Lanter: Rise of the Manhunters coming up, we're giving him special consideration. We took a look at the game recently, and we'll have a full report for you soon. In the meantime, just think about how often you've wished you had a power ring of your own.

The Warp Pipe
Long before Portal was zapping you into other locations, Super Mario Bros. was taking you to unknown realms via the Warp Pipe. It's been a mainstay ever since, and remains as entirely awesome today as it was when it first appeared in the original Mario Bros. back in 1983. Since then, they've appeared in nearly every Mario game, served multiple purposes, and been the video game equivalent of the Boom Tubes that the New Gods use to get around in the DC Universe. Did I just out myself as a giant geek? There is even an entire Warp Pipe Planet in Super Mario Galaxy 2. So just reflect on that while you listen to this.

Thane Krios
Let's look at what this green-skinned guy from Mass Effect 2 has going for him: he's from a reptilian race of aliens called the Drell, he's an assassin, and well, there's the whole skin thing. But does he let any of that get him down? No. He's devout, devoted, and extremely good at what he does. How many times have you seen an assassin ask for forgiveness from his victims? He's also a possible love interest for your female Shepard, so that's a plus as well. He also looks like he could be Abe Sapien's cousin, which should net points from Hellboy lovers.

Green Mana
Magic: The Gathering already had an enormous following behind it when it released Duels of the Planeswalkers, folding in even more addicts to the realms of card-playing and mana-tapping. With the next installment in that game series due later this year, and another core card set on the way. Players of both of those versions of Magic know that green mana is extremely important, depending on your deck. And how do you get that green mana? By tapping a green land card, of course. It's also a mainstay in games like World of Warcraft where you wield magic, and even the Doom offshoot Hexen where magic powers your weapons.

Blanka
You might know the guy, but do you know what lies behind his green skin? There's a sensitive monster lurking back there. Dpeending on which game's backstory you follow, Blanka ranges from everything to a former boy named Jimmy who was separated from his mother in a plane crash and learned his zapping power electric eels, or he's a beast lured from the wild. For me, he repreents hundreds of victorous matches in the arcades of the 1980s. I angered plenty of players who said that using Blanka was cheap, but for those of us in the brotherhood of Blanka, he was a perfect powerhouse performer.

The Health Bar
Sure, the Health Bar on your HUD isn't always green, but if there's a large bar on the bottom or top right or left, gamers immediately know that it's the health bar. It becomes the ultimate thing that you must protect, and you can't let it dwindle to zero lest your onscreen hero crumple and die. Whether it goes from green to red, represents your mana, your rage, your inner fire, the state of your shields, or the fact that you're targeting a friendly and not an enemy, green in your HUD has been a longtime pillar of game design and is obviously here to stay. It just works best when it's your health bar. Amirite?
What are your favorite green things in games?
