The PlayStation 3’s motto is “It only does everything,” but since last night, when the entire PlayStation Network went offline for some as-yet-unknown reason, it might be more accurate to say "it only does some things." So which things can you still do with your PlayStation 3?
The PlayStation 3 Can Still…
- Access The Internet: Although the PlayStation Network is borked, your PS3 console should still be able to access the internet as if nothing is wrong.
- Play Single-Player Games: As far as I am aware, there are no single-player games that require a functioning PlayStation Network in order to work. You should still be able to play single-player games you downloaded in the the past as well.
- Play Local Multi-Player: This is the perfect opportunity to get a friend on your couch and re-experience the joy of couch co-op.
- Earn Trophies: Although you won’t be able to show off your accomplishments to your pals, you’ll still be able to earn ‘em. Presumably, when the PlayStation Network is back up, (which could take as long as two days), your friends will be able to see your new single-player trophies.
- Play Blu-Ray Discs And DVDs: You’ll still be able to watch Monsters Inc. on BlueRay, don’t worry, and that's almost as good as playing Portal 2's co-op, right?
- Stream Media From Your Computer: If you use your PS3 to watch movies or play music stored on your PC, you’ll still be able to enjoy it.
The PlayStation 3 Can Not…
- Play Any Games Online: As far as I am aware, any game that features online play cannot work without the PlayStation Network, rendering some online-only games like MAG totally unplayable.
- Access Steam: With the launch of Portal 2 earlier this week, Steam access has been added to the PSN, but because you can’t access the PSN, no Steam for you.
- Access the PlayStation Store: You won’t be able to buy new downloadable games or content until the PSN goes back up.
- Access “Cloud-Saved” Games: Portal 2 for the PS3 allows users to store their games in the proverbial clouds, for retrieval on any PS3 that’s connected to the PlayStation Network… which means no PS3 on Earth, at this second.
- Enter PlayStation Home: Not being able to sign on to the PlayStation Network means not being able to visit your fake virtual Home home either.
- Play Netflix Movies: You won’t be able to watch Netflix without logging into the PSN, and don’t try to get clever and access Netflix with the PS3’s web browser; it won’t work. You’ll be told the PS3 browser doesn’t support streaming. Bummer, man.
- Play Hulu Content: Ditto
- Make Toast: This is the case whether the PSN works or not, but it still makes me mad.
I think that just about covers everything… except the things I forgot. If there’s anything you know about parts of the PS3 that aren’t working, let me know in the comment section below. Also: Anyone want to make a prediction for when the PSN will be up again? My guess: 3 PM PST today.

I have no problem with Netflix or regular internet usage, just no psh. I'll wait til it's fixed. Have to wait and see what happens later this week.

Actually you can access Netflix. When you get the prompt to sign in go ahead and try and let it sit on the failed screen until you see the home page for netflix come up and then hit O. Voila! Netflix access. It has been my primary source of entertainment since Wed the 20th when the PSN went down. Although I am seriously irked since a certain car I require in GT5 can only be bought online and thus I am basically deadlocked until I get access again. I really wish they'd just give a definitive date on when the network will be back up.

you can still watch netflix. just go to netflix then it'll tell you to sign in, then just press x to sign every time it pops up. it should only pop up like 2 times or so, after that it shouldn't pop up any more while you're watching movies

Derp you can still use NetFlix! you will just need to go through 2 or 3 fail sign ins but you will get to the page with no further interruptions!

Well im pretty upset.. that i cant access the store only just buying Psplus before this crap happened.. and the only game i actually dl was Red faction: battlegrounds.. (useless except for training missions) *sigh* so to pass time might as well play Gran Turismo 5 Endurance rounds :D

It's one thing to report psn being down,but to keep posting articles for the 360 guys to have a field day about it, well on the bright side i have my pc to fill the gap and the ps3 still actually has games coming to it.

I've always played single player. That's all that matters. It can be down for 2 years I'll be playing solo. I don't need or care for multiplayer. Games do NOT revolve around multiplayer

they should update about the whole thing about not being able to use netfllix cuz i have no problem accessing it u just have to click log in a few times then ur in lol. no one to blame :P

Guess what im soo good that i can still watch netflix just when it says to sign in do it and then press the ps butten and it will load takes a few min and you can still watch away dont know why that works still tho you think everything would still work then but heck im the best thats why thats the only reason it works is me.

The netflix statment isnt true.. it will ask you yes to log in.. do not back out/press circle. just hit enter and continue to login. it will either give you an error msg of sorts or "playstation network is under matinence. this is fine hit to continue.. it may ask one more time it may not. just continue as normal and try. even thou it gives error msg you should still be able to get into netflix and watch movies.. ever since psn has been down i havent had a problem watching netflix if you just follow the instructions i gave you.

PS3 user all way say "hows it feel paying for online...suka?" Well right now great! Sorry :( i am going to go play some XBOX live. Good luck seeing that error message on playstation... :)

YOU CAN STILL USE NETFLIX, just click sign in when it asks, then hit circle when it shows the error. it will still load up
