PlayStation NetworkThe PlayStation Network is down across the globe, with users across Europe and the United States  reporting an inability to log in or use the PSN. While Sony says it's looking into the matter, the company acknowledges it could be a cyberattack.

On Sony Europe's official site, the company posted the following notice:

As you are no doubt aware, the current emergency outage is continuing this afternoon and all Sony Online Network services remain unavailable. Our support teams are investigating the cause of the problem, including the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party. If the reported Network problems are indeed caused by such acts, we would like to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service. Our engineers are continuing to work to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers’ continued support. For further information, please refer to updates on PlayStation.com, here on PlayStation.Blog and via our @PlayStationEU twitter feed.

Sony was recently the target of "Anonymous," a loose collective of internet pranksters and activists, due to its lawsuit over hacking of the PlayStation 3. The group (or really, a nameless person claiming to be a member of the group) issued a statement saying Sony "abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information about how your products work", "victimized [its] own customers merely for possessing and sharing information" and of violated "the privacy of thousands of innocent people who only sought the free distribution of information."

Since Sony settled the lawsuit that caused the initial threat from Anonymous, you'd think the hackers would have moved on to other targets, but perhaps not. As of yet, no group has taken credit for downing the PSN, and the results are not in as to what caused the actual outage. We'll give you more information as it develops.

i don't like being not able 2 play my online games , but when sony trys 2 sue some one for using there system the way they want is wrong. we pay our hard earn money to buy a ps3 it is ours not sonys. i hope some 1 makes a off brand ps3 that will play all system games and do every thing sony don't want us 2 have... the outage sucks but if it shows sony where in charge so be it.

Wonder if the hackers are also trying to get our credit card info... hmm then again Sony is probably taking precaution by turning off the server for now.

I think this still goes back to Geohot. He jailbreaked the iphone and he did the same with the ps3. The fact that he is fighting a lawsuit over the freedom we should all have with our own systems might have been enough to set someone very smart off to a mission. Think about it, its like being sued by chevy for you customizing your camaro. Why should we be controlled with what we own? With what you paid for? Sure there are people abusing that freedom, but isn't it Sony's job to provide us with that security? This is raising awareness for many people and I personally am glad that I did some research. I think this is for a good cause. Why should we be limited to do what we like to what we paid for when we are not a part of a contract? This fight could lead to so many new possibilities. New product support businesses, new software and support to push our consoles to the limit. The freedom to really own what you spent your money for. Apple already lost against Geohot and now you and I can all do so many more things with our Iphones, LEGALLY. I think that this mess is just a form of a wake up call for Sony and all of us as their consumers. Its only a matter of time until the same happens to every other product like xbox 360 and other operating systems. Sure we may be loosing a few days of online playing time, but if in the long run we wind up being able to enjoy our consoles to the fullest in the future, I wont mind this delay at all.

this is just an errant thought, but could sony have staged this just to 'sick the hounds' on Anonymous? Im not against that at all but im just curious if Sony would stoop to something like that?
No flaming please im just curious

Ok jusst to put thIngs in perspective... Sony and anon are in the midst of a cyber war. Anon claims its attacks. How do you all know that sony didnt make these outages to try and make it look like anon was behind the attacks? How do you know sony isnt running a secretive smear campaign against anon? Of course everyone is gonna blame anon. But anon doesnt seek to disrupt gamers. Theyve said the first one was wrong. They owned up to it. They are on OUR side as gamers. They only want to correct injustices of large corporations. Dont be so quick to blame. Think about the big picture.

But the Europe Playstation link you provide holds no cyberattack reference at all. It simply states they are looking into the problem.
