It's not often that professional gaming teams nail high end sponsorship deals, but Team Evil Geniuses has just secured one with Monster Energy drink. This is the first time that Monster has aligned with a pro gaming team and for the eSports industry this is a pretty big deal.
Joe Hagofsky, Monster Energy's Gaming Marketing Manager said, "Monster Energy is supportive of and enthusiastic about the growth of professional gaming on a global scale."
Team Evil Geniuses began in 1999 and describes itself as the premiere professional gaming team of North America supporting pro gamers in titles like Counter-Strike, Quake, StarCraft 2, Super Street Fighter 4, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and World of Warcraft.
Scott "SirScoots" Smith, Evil Geniuses' Chief Executive Officer said, "As we continue to advance the growth of professional gaming, it’s essential for us to align with brands that are like-minded and passionate to our vision. We’ve found that in Monster Energy and we’re thrilled for what’s in store for 2011 and beyond.”
This type of sponsorship deal is unlike any other in the current eSports scene. First of all it's extremely difficult to get any type of sponsorship for professional gaming teams. When teams do get them, it's almost always from smaller, unheard of, companies or products. The implications of a leading energy drink sponsoring a team bodes very well for the future of eSports as it shows the growth of the scene and will help to push it into a more mainstream view.
"For years, professional gaming has been financially supported mostly by the companies directly tied to gaming," Smith told us. "A new era is now dawning with the arrival of mainstream lifestyle sponsors like Monster Energy. These are the brands that will help us all elevate professional gaming to a whole new level."
