
There's a small battle for the legacy of Valve's Portal 2 going on right now on review aggregation site Metacritic. While professional reviewers are competing to see how effusive they can be in their Portal 2 praise (the Metacritic score for the PC version is 95 out of a 100 right now), the reviews from actual, rank-and-keyboard gamers are less than outstanding (75 out of 100 for the PC version, at the time of this writing). What accounts for the discrepancy? At least partially, it seems due to gamers anger over some of Valve's out-of-the-game decisions.
While it's hard to assign intention to an aggregation of individual user-reviews, a look at the negatives comments about the game that have been added recently reveal what looks a lot like internet "protesters" driving down the final score of the game.

So what are the gripes of these protest user-reviewers? Here's how the broad themes break down:
- "Portal 2 for the PC is a direct port of the console version." Some gamers are convinced that Valve created Portal 2 for the console market, posting things like: "Apparently, the text in the PC version of the game discourages users from "turning off their consoles" during saves, leading some to assume this means the game was developed for consoles, then ported to PCs. While the evidence of this contention is pretty thin, I contacted Valve and asked 'em, but haven't heard back. Hopefully, I will soon, and I'll let you know.
- "Portal 2's online store is a rip-off!" Some PC gamers are, it seems, pretty angry over being asked to pay for DLC, as well as expressing dissatisfaction in the prices they are being charged. Or, as metacritc critic Lehandyr put it: "Pay for gestures, pay for hats, pay for a 1 **** day DLC and pay for 4 **** hours of gameplay. It isn't a bad game but I don't wanna pay for things that I ACTUALLY PAID FOR. And yes, I liked Valve until this game but this is just pathetic. You lost all that users that trusted you Valve, all of them."
- "Portal 2's ARG promotion was lame!" The ARG, which called for gamers to download and play indie games from Valve's Potato Sack in order to unlock Portal 2 early, was not without its critics, who felt that asking gamers to buy games they don't necessarily want in order to play they game they do want was little questionable. When the end result of an entire Internet's worth of gaming effort only shaved a couple hours off the release of the game, many gamers were plenty steamed. As meta-critic user Douglas put it: "I wish I had bought the game and my internet was off until today, so I couldn't know anything about Valve screwing customers by a marketing scheme."
- "Portal 2 is too short!" Many metacritic reviewers are pointing to game-finishing times of under four hours. I think you'd have to speedrun it to do it that fast, if it's possible at all, but hey, when have facts ever gotten in the way of internet gaming rage? Here's an example of a "too short" quote, from gamer saulout: "It's a 50$ game that single player you beat in 2-3 hrs...coops another 2-3 hrs." Personally, I don't care about game length. Just as I don't think The Godfather would have been better if it was 5 hours longer, I tend to judge games based more on how good they are, as opposed to how long they are.
I'm going to try to remain as neutral here as possible, while not hiding the fact that I loved Portal 2 like a seal loves fish, so I won't point out what a bunch of whiners the Metacritic haters are. Instead, I'll say that connoisseurship is a good thing. Professional critics--people who take games seriously enough to make part of their living from them--are probably better able than anonymous internet dwellers to comment on the quality of a game, as they have their names attached to their opinions, as well as their reputation and future employment at stake. Plus, pros probably play a lot more games, a lot more "seriously" than some guy on the internet.
That having been said, if this "protest" thing continues to happen and negative scores continue to come into sites like Metacritic, I think Valve and other game manufacturers could learn a lesson from it. Specifically about how the touchy, shrill hivemind of internet gamers are likely to react to marketing "stunts" and changes in the way that revenue is generated in games.
As anyone who follows games already knows, Valve has a reputation for creating high-quality products and generally giving a toss about the opinions of the PC gamers who make up the core of their fanbase. But like many passionate relationships, the interplay between Valve and its most devoted admirers can get a little co-dependent. The PC gaming community has set expectations so high for Valve (and Portal 2) it's hard to imagine how the actual release of the game could measure up, in spite of Valve's Herculean effort.

When you add a profit motive to the mix, gamer-anger toward Valve is even more understandable. It's nice to think that the people who make games are doing it because they're cool gamer-guys/artists, and they just want other people to be happy. But at the end of the day, Valve is a company like any other, and its motive is to make money in order to meet payroll, make more games, throw awesome E3 parties, and fatten up owners' bank accounts.
We wouldn't have games like Portal 2 within any other economic system, so I'm not hating on Capitalism but pointing out that things like an online store full of two-dollar animations and silly hats pay the bills for Valve. It's not like you need any DLC to finish the game; it's all cosmetic. But still, PC gamers are less accustomed to DLC-for-money than console gamers, who have been dealing with it since at least the day's of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion's expensive Horse Armor.

The takeaway: High expectations, anonymity and passion can add up to some very strong emotions being expressed on internet forums; emotions that don't necessarily translate into reasoned "scores" from amateur critics.
So where do you fall in this matter? Are you in the pro-Portal camp, or are you more like "Screw Valve! It's a rip-off!"

Yes, having to pay for the DLC was a concern however the game has substantial depth and with the ability to build your own maps, make machinima or download some very challenging single player (SP) and multiplayer (MP) maps free online content the value add for Portal 2 is growing. I have had many hours of fun making machinima with Portal 2 in addition to the standard SP and MP run through.

I have said this many times and will say it again, PC players are ungrateful for what they get. PC players get the Sacrfice DLC for L4D1 and 2 for free. They complain about it the DLC not being the best campaign. Xbox players have to pay 560 MS points for the DLC and we did enjoyed it for what we got. Grow up PC players, stop being spoiled brats.

There is definitely some over-reaction to the situation over the ARG and in-game store. Valve stated emphatically that they'd never charge for DLC back in 2007. What they sell in the store are purely aesthetic items, and not content, and I think Valve saw the business model of LOL and other, similar, free to play games, and thought that was actually a pretty reasonable business model. This is of course supposition on my part. I don't actually know their rationales, but this is something I strongly suspect.

Though the tone of the statement in the article behind the link doesn't sound like that as much, I really sort of suspect that's something like the rationale of Valve, which I'm pretty much ok with, since I don't plan on buying every bit of colorful crap to dress up my portal 2 bots in...Unless they make a full on hooker outfit for peabody, Leapord print paint job, Eye-shadow, big painted on lips and a handbag, plus leapord print skirt. (Sorry, pretty much off topic there)
The ARG amounted to the game being available to PC gamers the same time it was available to consoles effectively, and I sort of suspect it was done with that in mind. Though I'm unsure. Like Jay Gaskill said in Feedback, had it unlocked a week early, or similar (even Friday/Saturday) I think it would have been fine. I was pretty peeved at the large amount of work, low yeild result we got. Though I did literally enjoy playing defense grid, which I bought specifically for the ARG (I already had six of the thirteen games in the Potato Sack, so buying the entire thing seemed like a bad idea) for something like 14 hours over the weekend.

I really enjoyed the ARG. I had a blast following the people far smarter than myself who solved the puzzles. I enjoyed the Potato sack games. I probably would not have tried them had it not been for the promotion for Portal 2. I would have missed out on 13 really interesting and fun games.
I have to say that unlocking a few hours early for the amount of effort many of us put in was less than desirable. I think the final portion should have run for longer before hand with the chance to unlock the game a few days early rather than a few hours.
Ultimately, Valve made good on their promise by rewarding those who put forth the most effort by giving them all their games including Portal 2. I, unfortunately, did not get all the potatoes, so I did not receive a free copy of the Complete Valve Collection. Even so, I'm really happy with how Valve treats it's fans.
It is unfortunate that the dissatisfied few can make such a ruckus while the majority of us are Portal 2 and enjoying the hell out of it. I feel bad for those who are complaining. They're really missing out on a great experience. Portal 2 is nothing short of amazing and I'm excited to finally have it in my hands!

Obvious trolls. A lot of them were complaining about dlc, I guess they didn't realize they weren't forced to purchase it. Also a lot of the bad reviews said the game was 4 hours long, you would have to be highly intelligent to beat it in 4 hours. I'm halfway through the campaign with about 4 hours of play time and I've haven't been stuck on any puzzle for more than 10 or 15 minutes so I know that those trolls are full of crap. I do agree that the game is to short for a $60 purchase though.

If I can beat a game in one night and have nothing to do after that...then it sure as hell aint worth 60 bucks....
The first game was great....got it in a bundle with 2 other games, it was fun, it was new, it was challenging (somewhat)....Its predecessor is just not a stand alone game and it wasnt challenging, not even in the slightest bit.
Feels like I got suckered into buying the game...what with all the hype carried over from the first installment and the non-stop ads on tv, so basically I bought the name.
PC gamers want to be separate from consoles....if I want to play a game casually and not really be challenged I'll pop in a game into my PS3.....If I want to be challenged and engaged into the game, play it for 8 hours straight and still not be 1/10 done with the content I turn to my PC games

How can you say professional reviewers know more than regular gamers? The generaal audience is not PAID by game advertisers to influence game reviews. I would think that other gamers (as a whole) would be the BEST source to get a review, not from a website that gets paid to give a game good scores.

You know what... i'm sick of PC Gamer complaining when something doesn't go their way. They sound like a bunch of spoiled children. PC Games can get modded with customization beyond imagination. The games are cheaper, they get a lot of stuff that will NEVER be on a console, and in the case of Valve, they gave you free DLC in the past while I had to pay for all of mine... I don't care how bad they felt, they didn't feel bad enough to give me a refund. So just because you have to pay for something or it's not up to some high holy standard you set, deal with it... I'll gladly give my money for Portal 2 on the 360, and I have no plans to buy ANY of the cosmetic DLC, why cause I DON'T WANT TO... see how I did that.. I chose NOT to buy something that has ZERO impact on the game.

let me start off by saying in general i am a fan of most of valves products.this has nothing to do with the deals at steam!
BUT! some of you people give valve far to much credit and only remember the love valve use to give you as a pc player and a ported orange box!
sure the orange box was a chalkfull port with alot of games but the only new stuff was portal!
left 4 dead and left 4 dead 2 didn't nearly get the support pcer's were use to with counter strike and team fortress!
and to think portal could support a full 60 dollar release is dicey. let's not reward valve for what they use to do only for pc players but judge them on the here and now and all systems their products come out for.

I'm getting so sick of PC Gamers bickering all the time, why would developers bend over backwards to flesh out a PC version of a game when the majority of people who play it are just going to pirate it anyway? And its probably the most shallow thing you could ever do, judging a game solely on its graphical or technical fidelity. So what if you can only see yourself rendered in two portals, that's more than enough to create the convincing mirrored effect. It's so childish, as if a game not looking as good somehow makes the gameplay worse. What would you rather have a game like Crysis with good graphics and terrible gameplay?

The temptation to 'squeeze every dollar' out of a product is too much for businessmen, even the great game makers at valve. People sit in boardrooms and discuss how they can generate even more revenue out of an outstanding product and come up with things like the potato sack indie option, when it is completely unnecessary. Game makers look at their competition and say: "Look, DLC is a GREAT way to make even MORE money." or "Gamers love to buy useless crap to add to their avatars, why not add this to our game.
I've watched this steady decline into the 'money pit' by game makers happen year after year ever since WOW showed you can make a ridiculous crap load of money from a product. There is nothing WRONG with Portal 2, it is really a great game for those who like puzzle games. Adding all that extra hoopla wasn't going to change that, only detract from it's image.

I have Portal 2 on PS3, and by extension, on PC as well. I haven't gotten around to trying it on the PC, but what I see here is PC owners with a superiority complex. Yes, the PC costs more, but you are getting cleaner graphics. Do you have to buy the silly hats in the store? No. So vote with your wallet and don't purchase it if you don't like it. It's that simple.
It's a game. Is the game fun? Go with that. I personally consider this game fun and entertaining, and I will rate it as such. I consider it game of the year material.

The complaints on Metacritic are complete BS.
The claims about it being a console port are completely unfounded. I am a hardcore PC gamer, and usually one of the first to notice when a game is a dumbed down port, and in the case of Portal 2, it is not. Valve has always been extremely supportive of the PC platform, and has never made a game that doesn't work properly on the PC.
Most of the complaints however, are about the ARG leading up to the release, which was a little bit of a dismantlement seeing how it didn't release that much sooner than it was supposed to, but the people who bought into it shouldn't have bought the Potato Sack just for Portal 2. I don't know what they were expecting to happen if they bought the Potato Sack, but it seems pretty stupid to me to be complaining about the ARG when the review is supposed to be about the game, not the circumstances around it's release.
The length of the game was a bit short, but it was still longer than other games that are being released. It would have been nice if they had gone into more detail surrounding Cave Johnson, the history of Aperture and the creation of GLaDOS, but the game was still amazing.
The item store made me laugh more than anything. I've sunk over 1,000 hours into TF2 as it's one of my favorite games, and seeing the item store in Portal 2 just made me laugh, as well as the corresponding post on the TF2 blog about it. The game should be about the gameplay, not the items. People should stop focusing on that and just play the damn game.

Too short? Did everyone forget how short Portal 1 was? My very first playthrough without knowing how to solve everything only took 2 hours. Portal 2 took at least 5 hours the first time through. So they effectively doubled the gameplay time without causing it to drag
