Of all the mongering I do, rumor-mongering is my favorite. Today's monger: God of War 4 will be released in September of 2012. We don't even know that the game exists, but we're already predicting the release date! How's that for rumoring?
The word comes by way of the next issue of unofficial PlayStation mag PSM3, which will be on stands next week and contains the following text:
"PSM3 has heard from another source that God of War 4 is coming, and will hit in September 2012...Our source works closely with the God of War universe, and let slip he'd be working on a related project at the same time."
I asked Sony about the rumor, and they responded with, "We don't comment on rumors or speculation about our products," which is not a big surprise.
Maybe the strongest evidence for the existence of God of War 4 is that Sony would be crazy to not have the game in the works -- it's a hugely popular franchise, after all.
Although the last Kratos outing was the finale of a trilogy, Sony has publicly said that God of War 3 was not the end of the series, as far back as March 2010. Producer Steve Caterson said:
"Well, God of War 3 is the end of the trilogy," Caterson told IndustryGamers. "We didn't leave you on a cliffhanger but I think it's not the end of the franchise. I'm looking forward to do something different if we can."
- RATING: God of War 3 review
My idea for the next God of War game: Kratos leaves the Gods of Olympus behind and takes on the pantheon of current gods -- you know, God, Satan, Buddah, Vishnu -- and really mixes it up. I know this will never happen (too controversial!) but wouldn't it be awesome? What do you want to see in the next God of War game?
