A very complex puzzle called the Portal Alternate Reality Game (ARG) has been revealing quite the interactive story over the past few weeks and has just got a lot more interesting as some Half-Life 2: Episode 3 clues have emerged. The ARG is what lead to the recent Potato Sack Bundle frenzy where PC gamers were playing massive amounts of indie games in an effort to get Portal 2 released a few days early. The new clues in the ARG come from some morse code that played over Steamcast, an unofficial Valve fan radio show. The morse code read: It’s not over the others have been compromised.
Since Valve has been supporting indie games so much through the Potato Sack sales, it's no surprise that the company also wanted to do something else within the community. The Valve ARG Wiki also received an encrypted file that when accessed said:
—LOG FROM [ REDACTED ], BY J.H. TO C.J.—
1. We designed the entire thing to be very, very durable. It was easy to get the materials since everyone’s been thinking
it’s a simple icebreaker ship. Ha.
2. We have made sure to strip it of anything not necessary, so that we have plenty of space for it. It doesn’t have any
backup supplies in the event the crew runs out of food, though. And there isn’t much food onboard in the first place.
3. In the event you need to send it off all of a sudden, use the OR box with code ‘hb1′.
That’s all, C.J. Not much else I can tell you other than this won’t leave a blight on our record. Mesa is going to be sore
when they see what we’ve done.
We can gleam a few Half-Life 2: Episode 3 clues from the two messages. First off, as Aperture Science, (the research facility in Portal) is Black Mesa's (the research facility from Half-Life's) rival, Black Mesa could be considered the "others" from the morse code message. Also, C.J. from the encrypted message could definitely refer to Cave Johnson, the CEO of Aperture Science. We're not too sure who J.H. is at this time, but I'm sure we'll find out soon. The encrypted message also obviously mentions Mesa in the final line and also a nod to the Borealis ship from Half-Life 2: Episode 2 with the icebreaker ship line.
When Portal 2 comes out tomorrow it will surely reveal even more hints that lean towards the announcement of Half-Life 2: Episode 3, or even potentially Half-Life 3. Have you been following the ARG Puzzle and are excited about these clues?

Let's stop with the HL3, please. Valve still has to release the last episode of HL2.
I'll be happy with an Episode 3. Valve has said it'd be ambitious, which pretty much explains for the most part why it's now going on to year four without word from Gordon Freeman.
An HL3 announcement would be icing on the cake. But we all knew from the start Episode 3 was going to be big. Suddenly people think that just because it's been delayed a couple years suddenly Valve's just doing HL3. The leaps of logic boggle my mind.
However I'm starting to see traces of Episode 3 popping up, either in ARGs or in hidden little treasures in Valve's current releases. I predict in at most a month a full-scale Episode 3 ARG will be underway, and in two or three months, FINALLY Gabe will just say "Episode 3, this holiday season."
That, or Valve will blow us away in E3 this year with it. The long-awaited conclusion to the Half-life 2 saga that started in 2004.
Maybe an ARG leading up to an E3 blowout. Valve would totally do that.
Then word from Valve may or may not come out on development starting on Half-life 3. My money is on them being rather hush-hush about it. Maybe releasing another Portal game or expansion for Half-life 2 in the style of HL1's expansions.
Then BOOM: HL3 will be out, say... 2014, 2015, brand new game engine, just like how HL2 moved us to Source from GoldSrc. A lot of people seem very uninspired and want to call that new engine "Source 2." Valve wouldn't call it a lame name like that, people.
Anyway, predictions for Episode 3 itself:
1. We aren't going to start right away in the arctic. I actuallt expect that a couple action chapters will actually take place at White Forest and outlying just to give us a last taste of the eastern European environs. I mean, there was still more or less a Combine presence in the area if advisors were feeling confident enough to storm the base and kill Eli. Thus...
2. ... The expected trip to the north won't even start until chapter 3 at the earliest.
3. Despite the fact Aperture Science is obviously going to be important to the story, we aren't going to see Chell or a Portal Gun.
4. Good money on there being a GLaDOS on-board, however. And yes...
5. ...that GLaDOS will be a very VERY important part of the plot.
6. Another of the science team is certain to die. My money is on Mossman, if she's not dead already.
7. Kleiner and Dog won't die because they are too comedic to die. We already finally said good riddance to Lamarr in Episode 2.
8. Gordon will, despite probably the greatest triumph humanity would ever achieve in the HL universe, remain silent through all the celebrating.
Now for some less certain predictions.
1. We might actually learn the GMan's true nature, and...
2. ...that will end up being central to Half-life 3's story whenever Valve actually begins work on that.
3. The teleportation technology on the Borealis will either be an ending splitter, akin to the ending of HL1, or...
4. It will not, but its use might end up being catastrophic not only for the Combine and end up being what ends up defeating them in the grande finale, but end up possibly dooming earth as well. After all, the Borealis incident was supposedly very catastrophic for Aperture science, perhaps the very thing that ultimately ended up ruining the company aside from GLaDOS taking over Aperture Laboratories. Keep in mind no one outside of Chell and maybe, MAYBE, a few others are even aware Aperture Science as a company basically met its end NOT at the hands of the Combime.
5. That GLaDOS would have Cave Johnson's consciousness in it just as the Enrichment Center's GLaDOS has Caroline's. However, this might be hard to pull off, given the fact that Cave has been shown to be a bit zany in Portal his personality just might not fit in the more dark story tones of Half-life 2. Then again, GLaDOS in Portal ended up not taking on too much of Caroline's actual personality traits. Could be the GLaDOS on the Borealis might actually be sane, thus:
6. The Borealis GLaDOS will be a GOOD GUY. Perhaps spending the decades after the Borealis incident and the Seven Hour War wondering if he can do anything to help earth. (Even the actual canon GLaDOS hints that she would oppose the Combine with all her might if it came down to it. Pay close attention to certain things she says during the final battle of Portal 1. She's definitely making some pretty direct implications about the Combine. But still, the difference between Portal GLaDOS and Half-life GLaDOS might actually be that HL GLaDOS is not nutty and not homicidal.)
7. Alyx will spend a good portion of Episode 3 trying to cope with the stress she's been under since HL2, which was made all the worse by watching her father get killed by the Combine. This could be extended by...
8. Alyx unintentionally causes a nearly fatal setback to the entire resistance at a moment of truth when thoughts of how her life sucks cause a breakdown.

A theory: the Borealis' purpose was to travel the world for portal gun field testing, but for some reason, the whole ship got teleported. Flash forward to HL3, and Freeman acquires a portal gun and has to fight off the Combine with it as he moves through some portals, but by the end of it the Portal Gun becomes unstable (as has been noted in the gun blueprints) and destroys the ship just after he escapes with whatever the Advisors were after. Could be some opportunities for some Portal humor, where a copy of GLaDOS also runs the Borealis and decides to 'test' the Combine soldiers while you watch.

i think i'm gonna go play the orange box. i never really felt the need to, considering how i have portal: still alive. but this franchise just has too much critical acclaim for me to ignore.

SirCitadel: Because it's been a really, REALLY long time, so we should be getting HL3, not Episode 3. Expansions don't take 4-5 years (pretty sure Ep. 2 came out in 2006, I think..), that's why a lot of people would rather they just skip that and get HL3 out. If they wanted to continue and finish up the story arc, well, they should have by now, it's been 4-5 years! We should of had it by 2008, maybe 2009, at the latest, seriously. I can't even remember what went on in Ep. 2 and what happened at the end, because it's been so damned long. Expansions that last around 10 hours and that use the same in-game graphics as the original game, normally take around a year or less to come out, certainly not 4-5 years. Heck, we got Undead Nightmare around Halloween and that (if you do everything and take your time) is around 10-12 hours, and it included a MP component. RDR came out in May, so let's see, that's around 5 months. I rest my case.

I honestly don't know why I care about this so much. But I do! I guess it is because the other games in this series resonated with me. It was because they created a sense of a real world that existed before you started playing and that would continue after you stopped. It was the first to use such sophisticated physics that allowed you to interact with the world. You can't turn around today without playing a title that pays homage to this series. It would make my gaming year to hear ANYTHING about this game's progress. Please let this cake not be a lie.
SirCitadel
for the love of all that is holy. they are NOT going to announce hl3 before episode 3. NOT. why is everyone so obsessed with that? theyre just numbers... in a name! it wouldnt make sense to launch a fully fledged sequel to a game thats story arc is left open. even IF they have a new engine (which they wont) its not going to be called HL3. go ahead, thumb me down - but every time a g4 staff member brings that up, i want to scream this out and i havent. until now. so im sorry.

I can't wait to pick this up tomorrow

Ep 3 should have already came out and now HL3 should be coming out but it will not mean anything when whatever they decide hits the market. (HL2 best game ever till 3 comes out but then again I'm hoping Postal 3 comes out soon also ... ha ha ha ha )

J.H. is currently thought to be the current captain of the Borealis.
Also, half-life references are not unknown to portal content. They take place in the same universe, and the ARG referencing half-life is not a big hint at episode 3 or half-life 3. Possible? Yes, but I wouldn't get hyped just yet.

Valve thank you for being the only gamiming company that keeps me on the edge of my seat waiting to finish a campaing years later I love you xP, btw Portal 2 will be awesome and I will give my body to science when HL EP3 comes out
Symicide
I'll be very sad inside if it's only HL: EP3 and not Half-Life 3
it's been so long i think a full Half-Life is in order.
notmillyvanilly
oh i just hope it is half life 3 and not episode 3.... that would mean a new game engine from valve!!
IntelliMoo
Probably L4D3 would hit in 2012 before any HL. lol
wolfman2010

CounterStrike 2 would be nice

Man I want HL3 bad but it seems like it's been so long since the end of HL2 episode 2 that I'm starting to lose interest I hope Valve hurries up and announces HL3 before I'm completely done with the series. On a side note I'm not really to interested in portal 2 The first was ok but not good enough to make me want to buy a full priced stand alone sequel.
redran2
abotu tiem it shows up
