Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

Adam is back for this week's Feedback, aren't you glad? After a few miserable weeks of relatively small release titles, this week brings three hugely anticipated games with Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, and SOCOM 4: US Navy SEALs. The panel has been fighting their way through Mortal Kombat and shooting their way through SOCOM 4 quite a lot over the past few weeks (and Morgan is somewhere lost in Portal land) and we would love to hear your questions about these games and other industry news.

The panel this week will include Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb, Jake Gaskill, and first time Feedbacker Donell Tucker who specializes in fighting games. Be sure to write your burning questions about these games, or whatever else you want to talk about that's gaming industry related, in the comments section below and tune in to Feedback every Wednesday.

With the romurs spreading around about a new Wii system is going to be reveild at E3 do you guys think that Sony and Microsoft are going to step up and release some new consoles the following year? Or is it really too soon for a PS4 or Xbox720? To me I think the whole HD Wii is too late and the only thing better than the consoles we have now would be consoles so powerful there is no load time EVER

With nothing coming out for the Wii this year expect maybe the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (won't hold my breath for that one) and with rumors of a new Nintendo home console. Do you think that the Wii is on it's way out the door and do you feel the Wii has lived up to our expectations?

With developers like Crytek and DICE asking for the next generation of consoles to feature such tech specs as 8GB of RAM, do you think the next generation of consoles could possibly rival some of todays high quality gaming PCs?

With a new Mortal Kombat, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter 4, and even a Street Fight/Tekken cross over. Are we seeing a new surge in fighting games or is this just nostalgia style fad?

Do you guys believe there is a legit generational gap forming in the video game community?

I find that many opinionated polls such as your "Videogame Deathmatch" have been showing not only a fanboyism to consoles, but also to generations. Taking franchises that have spanned system generations like Zelda and comparing them to great series that have taken place in one console generation like Assassin's Creed is really showing a blurring of what is needed to be considered great in the eyes of today's gamer. It seems those opinions can in many cases be related to what systems the player has had access to in their lifetime.

I've noticed recently that the more information I have about a game, the less likely I am to enjoy the game when I play it. For instance, in Mass Effect 2, trailers and tv-spots revealed pretty much all of your possible companions. Because of that, half of the game (the part spent finding those companions) was ruined because I already knew who I was going to get when the mission was done.

So my question is, do you think games should focus more on surprising us within the game, instead of enticing us by "revealing the secret characters" outside of the game?

With alot of the major releases in the last few years being franchise based, I was wondering what old franchises from previous console or pc generations the Feedback team would like to see come back. I personally am interested in the new X Com game.

The Force Unleashed 2 got criticized for only have a 5 to 8 hour long narrative, but some of our favorite shooters barely exceed that length in their own campaign. While it was unacceptable for The Force Restricted 2 to have a short singleplayer, it was perfectly acceptable for the FPS's because they had multiplayer. If The Force Compressed 2 had multiplayer, maybe it wouldn't have been as bashed as it was, but when is it ever acceptable for any game, including The Force Inadequate 2, to lack a long and fulfilling experience? The addition of multiplayer certainly doesn't give any game that right.

The general consensus is that the majority of video game stories are terrible. Yet storytelling is a process that has been refining itself since the dawn of man. Disregarding issues of interactivity, why do game stories suck? Why aren't video game writers borrowing from the proven tools used by other mediums?

With Portal 2 launching with cross platform play between its PS3, PC and Mac versions, do you ever see it as a feature that might become a bit more of a standard feature in future game releases?

Mortal Combat, Portal, and SOCOM are all great franchises that defiantly deserve their place in the video game world. All of these game franchises started out with very little people talking about them evolving into a worldwide phenomenon. Yet many games have all gained fame among us while other great games (i.e. Arma 2 and Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead) are still waiting for their chance to get into the spotlight at E3 and PAX. Meanwhile other games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops get all the attention not, fans, and great reviews, causing the some mainly in the PC community to think the developers have worked hard enough to get. So my question to you Mr. Sessler is success in the gaming community determined by how much potently the game has or how much money a publisher is will to spend to promote the game at E3,PAX, and the streets of LA?

In your opinion, what is the greatest contrast between story and gameplay mechanics, meaning great story but terrible gameplay?

I don't really have a question, but I do want you guys to talk abit about this Crysis 2 issue.

It's about a grain glitch, on the 360 version, which many people are experiencing.

Here's a rather large thread on Cryteks offical forum for Crysis 2 about it. But no fix, or no real word on the issue from Crytek. So I would love for you guys, to bring it a little out in the open. I don't want something like this to stay unfixed.

Here are 2 links about it:

When Miyamoto stated at Nintendo he used his imagination and past experience exploring caves to come up with Mario and Zelda. Now he has his wife and little girl, so now we get exercise games, Kirby's epic yarn, and easy to play games for non-gamers.

My question is this: If he had a 16 year old son what kind of games would Miyamoto be making now?

This is really more of a suggestion than a question, but here goes: G4's recent "Videogame Franchise Deathmatch" has given me the idea for a "Feedback Deathmatch". Basically, we take all the people who have ever appeared on Feedback and vote, round by round, until the ultimate Feedback personality is decided. This would just be a thing on the website, you guys wouldn't actually have to fight to the death in real life. Unless you want to.

I have never participated in an ARG before and actually have never heard one until this massive Potato Sack ARG from Valve popped up. Although the main focus is/was for the Portal 2 release, some speculate there could be other clues leading to a new Vavle game or even some announcement about Half-Life 3.

What ARGs have you participated in? Do you see them, specifically in Vavle's case, more as marketing schemes for increased sales? Do you think we will see more of this happening as downloadable games become more predominant?

With the new Nintendo console rumored to be coming/announced, do you feel this is a good time for a new console? How do you feel it would effect both Sony and Microsoft's if it was true?
