Morning Hangover #71 -- Andrew Looks For Feedback, Patrick Has TV Envy

Adam is back for this week's Feedback, aren't you glad? After a few miserable weeks of relatively small release titles, this week brings three hugely anticipated games with Mortal Kombat, Portal 2, and SOCOM 4: US Navy SEALs. The panel has been fighting their way through Mortal Kombat and shooting their way through SOCOM 4 quite a lot over the past few weeks (and Morgan is somewhere lost in Portal land) and we would love to hear your questions about these games and other industry news.

The panel this week will include Adam Sessler, Morgan Webb, Jake Gaskill, and first time Feedbacker Donell Tucker who specializes in fighting games. Be sure to write your burning questions about these games, or whatever else you want to talk about that's gaming industry related, in the comments section below and tune in to Feedback every Wednesday.

Will future 3DS games be all about the 3D aspect, or will game developers realise that not everyone used the 3D function and make it more about the story and character development or will developers make it both of those creating the perfect game for said system

Is there any way for me to find a list of average gameplay times for different video games?

    Dear Feedback,

I've been a dedicated fan of the Nintendo franchise since the beginning, (still have a working gamer gauntlet) but with each new platform since the Gamecube, I've found myself deviating away from it more and more.

Where Microsoft and Sony are of the mindset to "Adapt or Die" in terms of their titles, it seems Nintendo is either refusing to evolve or that it's reached it's physical limit. Their also on the bandwagon for finding new indie companies and new franchise-like characters to lead their companies.

Nintendo, however continues to recycle and resurrect legends from the past, and unlike Joss Whedon, I feel that rarely are these renditions ever big hits like they were in the past. Instead it seems they're focusing more on the niche technologies of the current timeframe (3D) or by offering what their competitors already have.

Do you think Nintendo needs to adapt in some way beyond their norm, and do you think that the possible Wii 2 can Weather the storm against it's competitors who continue to change along with the nature of gaming?

With single player and campaigns in games becoming shorter and shorter and multiplayer becoming more common in games that have no business having a multiplayer game mode such as Bulletstorm or, in my opinion, the Uncharted series, do you think that eventually all games will be centered around multiplayer and will have little to no single player or campaign game modes?

Any idea what's going to happen in Portal 3 or thoughts on what you would like to see? I know that Portal 2 is still new but come on, we don't need an official announcement to know that there's going to be a Portal 3.

The majority of shooter games feature a shorter than average singleplayer campaign; the game's focus then shifts to multiplayer. Arguably, the whole point of a lot of first person shooters are the online interactions, so why hasn't anybody thought of an MMO shooter?

One of the areas that many people feel the Mass Effect series has failed in is that of the romantic relationships. I m wondering why major sites like G4/X-Play did not fault the game and BioWare more for this. Why aren t we faced with the decision to save our romantic interest vs. saving a colony? Why doesn t the game put our romantic interest in harm s way and force us to rescue them or vice versa? Why don t the other characters, who may have also been romantically interested, play dirty or otherwise change because you did not chose them? Love certainly isn t the top priority for a game like Mass Effect, but it just seems so shallow comparatively speaking; a little side-boob just isn t enough anymore. What are you opinions on the matter?

Greetings to all on the pannel.
Last night, and a great deal of this morning, i was experiencing the sequal to one of my most treasured of games, Portal. Infact, it is the reason for my zombie like state while i try and pretend to not sleep here at universtiy.
Anyway, my question is, games that force a higher level of thinking are becoming a rarity these days with the exception of rts, which itself is starting to dwindle to only a few major franchises, as most studios now go towards a more mindless, explosions everywhere style of game, which to be honest has its perks. Why do you think it is that only developers such as valve and the indie community that seem to be the only source of these 'higher level thinking' games? Portal 2 has shown that there is a large demand for games of this manner, it seems odd that not many are tapping into this.

Also I would just like to point out that 'fesstercom' has a brilliant question, but why not just take portal and portal 2 (and other games that require higher level thinking) and set it as homework, it in itself teaches many focuses that are on the curriculum (at least the current NSW Australian curriculum anyway) why not set a game as homework and teach our kids skills through something most of them are bound to do anyway?

Portal is an interesting game because it teaches the player principle ways to overcome obstacles, then builds grander challenges based off these simple principles. The player is then able to apply what it has learned before in unique and creative ways to overcome these more complex challenges. Do you believe that games could be designed that bring the same learning process to today's educational system?

With the resurgence of the fighting game genre, the recent releases of MVC3 and Mortal Kombat and the upcoming Street Fighter cross Tekken, will we soon be over saturated with fighting games in the same way we have been inundated with military shooters in the past? Can we really have too much of a good thing?

Recently a game was released called Dungeons. All of the hype on the game prior to launch came from the fact that it was billed to be the spiritual successor to the popular Dungeon Keeper franchise. Reviews of the game were okay at best to very poor at worst. Most of the better reviews were only given by people who had not played the original series. Is this comparison fair? Considering that everything from the artwork to gameplay concepts were plagerized from the earlier games. And do these "remakes" really have a chance at success? Or do we place to much emphasis on our old memories of how much fun these games used to be?

With the constant advancements in the video game industry and innovative games like Portal it must be overwhelming to keep up as a critic. How has your profession evolved in its analysis, expectations and critiques of this ever changing medium?

I know this question comes late. But with the excellence of Portal 2, and a 5 out of 5 for Mortal Kombat. With the games we know are still set to come out later this year. Could this be the best year for Video Games? In terms of the amount of games that recieve an Xplay 4 or 5. Or just the fives. I guess I'm asking for an opinion from the critics point of view. Its only April and we still have a lot of good games coming down the pipeline.

My question is about X-com. With 2k rebooting the series, I wanted to know if you guys think that we need a remake of this game. It runs the risk of disappointing or gratifying fans of the original game. Personally, I would be very happy with a re-skin of the original with the same gameplay, updated graphics, and some more variety. One game that was remade very well was the 1st Resident Evil on the gamecube.

    Hello everyone,

I hope you are doing well. My question can go to anyone or everyone. I wanted to know what your initial thoughts were about Portal 2's early release scheme where they were to release the game earlier depending on how many people purchased and played their potatoe sack independent game pack. The game didn't release much earlier but I imagine they did sell a lot of $30 game packs. I personally think it was genius business wise but what do you think of it as a gamer?

    Best,
    Andrew

My question is for the entire Feedback crew. If you had your own personal fatality, what would it be?
