Portal 2

The big story today in video games: The potential early release of Portal 2. I’m on the fence as to whether Valve’s ARG ending is a frustrating bait-and-switch or an amazing way to promote the burgeoning indie gaming scene, but still, it’s happening. So I tracked down some of the indie developers behind the games that make up the Potato Sack Bundle to see what it’s like to be in the middle of a video game firestorm.

I asked Jeff Pobst, the CEO of Hidden Path Entertainment, the company behind Potato Sack game Defense Grid: The Awakening about how his game came to be involved in the ARG/Portal 2 release. “GLaDOS has invaded Defense Grid and has brought new content to our game and it sure seems to have something to do with launching Portal 2 early as well," Probst said. "We're blown away by this and amazed how many people have gotten involved," he added.

Dylan Fitterer, developer of Audiosurf, said, "My first reaction to all this is surprise that the Audiosurf servers are holding together! Maybe GLaDOS is helping them somehow?" when asked about his response to the sudden uptick in internet-fame for his game.

Alex Neuse, creator of Bit.Trip.Beat, told me, "It's kind of fun and kind of scary at the same time. I mean, we were expecting Valve to be all angry with us once potatoes started showing up in our game, because we thought it was hacked. But then they went and created this crazy Potato Sack sale thing, and that's been wonderful for discovering new fans."

"Judging by the action taking place on the GLaDOS@Home site, I definitely think gamers will be able to release Portal 2 early," Neuse said. "Especially if they stay plugged in and avoid eating, sleeping, exercising, or otherwise taking care of their personal hygiene."

When asked about scale of the gaming world's reaction, Neuse said, "We have no idea what's going on. We cannot keep up. Things are posted faster than humans are capable of posting things. In fact, this interview is probably already u---"

Next stop: Playing Portal 2 early!
