This morning, Valve dropped some details on Steam for the PlayStation 3. Steam, previously only available for PC, will launch for the PlayStation 3 with the release of Portal 2 on Tuesday. Here's what it will offer:
- Portal 2 will feature cross-platform matchmaking, gameplay, friends, chat, and achievements between the PS3 and PC.
- Steam on the PS3 saves co-op Portal 2 game progress and single player saved games to the "Steam Cloud," enabling players to pick up where they left off on any PlayStation 3.
- The Steam overlay for PS3 provides access to both PSN and Steam friends, displaying their in-game or online status and providing a quick pathway to text chats, player profiles, friend requests, and game invites. Steam Achievements are earned in at the same time PSN Trophies are earned and are also accessible within the Steam overlay.
- Linked players of the PS3 version of Portal 2 can access and play their copy of Portal 2 on any PC or Mac by redeeming an in-box access code on their computer. The Steam client verifies the linked customer and then lists Portal 2 among their library of Steam games for PC and Mac.
Steam on the PS3 provides access to all of these features once the player links their PlayStation Network account with a Steam account, which is done within the game. A Steam user can login to an existing account, and anyone new to Steam can create an account with the click of a button in Portal 2.
I don't know about you, but this has me seriously re-thinking the pre-order I've placed for the 360 version of Portal 2. Most of my friends have 360s, and I like the achievement system, but damn, these features just sound way too good to be true.
For more information, visit Valve's official Steam for PS3 site.
So what do you guys think? Does this represent the dawning of a new age of cross-console play and cooperation?

Hey Lucidity, what you got to say about this I wonder? Also do not forget, Valve is not being PS3 biased, they wanted to do the same for the 360 but greedy Microsoft would not combine XBL+Steal like Sony is doing with PSN.

While I do still believe that consoles are far inferior to PCs with regards to the First-person perspective games that Valve puts out, you are not gonna hear me complaining about the player base expanding to add those of console gamers and diversifying the crowd a bit.
Now what I am wondering is if they are going to try to also make their SDK work for the PS3 somehow, or if they are going to offer more PC/Mac codes for the PS3 version of their games to further increase participation in adding community made content as well. In that regard, most players never cease to amaze me with some of the clever designs and unique events they can dream up.
Either way, still seems like one astonishingly huge step in the right direction, go Valve!

I already pre-ordered my PS3 version a month ago...still feels weird wanting a Valve game on a PS3 and not an Xbox. It's like backwardsville

Awsome! go valve way to make an impact.

so maybe this could lead to other valve games to be available for the ps3 like l4d1 and 2? sweet

I wish this meant that I could play the PS3 version since I already pre-ordered the game through steam. maybe someday.....soon possibly
is steam going to be an app on its own on ps3? cuz then that might work

Portal....just isn't my type of game. That being said...this whole steam thing and ggetting a free steam copy if you buy a ps3 version is freakin rad

I myself have personally canceled my 360 pre-order to go ahead and order the PS3 version. After evaluating many of the for mentioned features. I myself have mostly 360 user friends. But this deal is just far too inciting. Buying one copy to get a free PC version. Being able to play at the comfort in front of my TV. Then to transition to a laptop at a friends house and resume the very same game. Sign me up.
I applaud Valve for giving to the fans with such a gracious feature with the integration with multiplatform.

I think I will be purchasing it on ps3 instead of xbox 360 I was in the same boat thinking of getting the xbox version but I want it to work with my mac

If I were to buy Portal 2 now, it definitely would be for the PS3 because of these features. To get a PC copy for free along with the PS3 version is awesome; it would be great to play the game on my laptop if I were traveling and away from my PS3.
