Activision adressed the future of Guitar Hero in a recent interview with GamingIndustry.biz. Turns out the series isn't as dead as we thought, it's actually just taking a long nap. Activision's Dan Winters said:
“Actually, just to clarify, we’re just putting Guitar Hero on hiatus, we’re not ending it. We’re releasing products out of the vault — we’ll continue to sustain the channel, the brand won’t go away. We’re just not making a new one for next year, that’s all.”
Activision wants to focus their money and time into games they won't have to take many risks on, like Call of Duty. Last week Tony Hawk said his franchise wasn't canceled either and we could see another skateboarding game as soon as 2012.

Of all of Activisions major franchises, the one that needs the to take a rest of CoD. A lot of the technical aspects of it are out dated. Give the developers time to make a new engine and do some actual changes to the way the game works.
Back on on topic. 2012 for a Tony Hawk game or GH game might be a bit soon unless we are talking late 2012. Even then we better get at least 16+ months between releases.
