The first episode of web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy has hit.
What started as a bizarre one-shot trailer with gruesome, pseudo-realistic imagery has evolved into this 10 episode action-packed web series. "Evolved" in the sense that (at least in this first entry,) it has slightly toned-down the grotesque, over-the-top aspects of that trailer from last year and comes out of the gate with more of a solid, realistic action style. As a result, while it still deviates heavily from the style of the iconic fighting game franchise, it simultaneously has more of the feel for the game's mythology.
Check out the first episode just below.
WARNING: Profane language which melts children's ears is used in this video.
So, we have Mortal Kombat original, Kano (Darren Shahlavi), a mercenary, smuggler, and just all-around undesirable human being running an underground robot factory. (Even low-down criminals are embracing geek aesthetic.)
Besides getting an introduction to what will be his famous laser-eye-thingy which becomes fodder for his fatalities, he also gets to interrogate a sexily-chained-up Sonya (Jeri Ryan). Oh, but s*** goes down when Jax (Michael Jai White) runs a rescue operation that results in some epic battles.
I'm actually pretty impressed with this first entry. Last year's trailer was intriguing, but its abundant references to the game in that gruesome-realistic context, almost made it seem that it was trying too hard. This time, the realistic deviation is coupled with more subtle references to the games. (Kano's eye-piece, reference to Stryker, robots likely to become Cyrax and Sektor, and Kano's knives.) Director Kevin Tancharoen was pretty effective in making it all come together nicely this time.
Have any thoughts on this first episode?

The thing I do not get is this belief that there has to be 'realism' to comic book and video game movies. This mentality is what ruined movies like FANTASTIC FOUR-RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER because 'Hollywood' believed that audiences would NOT except Galactus as a 50 foot giant man in a blue/purple space armor. Instead, they make him....a CLOUD? I'm sorry, but what you see in video games is NOT real, so it should NOT be made where the characters are human with no super powers, no special abilities, just humans fighting humans- THAT would be BORING. I DO like what I see. and hope there is more to come, with possibly longer episodes, but that will only come with time and the success of this web series (of which, it would be awesome to be picked up by HBO, SHOWTIME or AMC).

Off to somewhat of a slow start, but leaps and bounds better than any live action MK that came before. I like it being a bit more down to Earth and not so fantastical and colorful. Gritty is good. Dark is good. Looking forward to ep 2.

Meh...kind of lame 1st episode in my opinion. No cool fighting sequences. Just a boring gun fight. Needs more fighting!

10 episodes, eh? If each one is ten minuets like this, thats about two hours. They are essentially taking a movie and splitting it into 10 parts AND making it free. I just hope they dont try to make everything realistic. I want kano and Jaks to get their robotic parts, and I want supernatural stuff (esp. when it comes to scorpion and Sub-zero). Not a big fan of the games (Im not into fighting games, outside of tekken), but I love the story and mithology of the series and I hate how hollywood feels it neccesary to make everything realsitic. Realism is BORING!

Ugh....It could of been an amazing movie instead.

I hope this starts the heavy trend with networks to take shows that can't pull the numbers they want, and turn them into web based series. IE (firefly, V, Heroes, ETC.)

When the season is over and the DVD is released, Kevin will have made the movie he originally wanted. I love it when things work out like that.

So I take it this is meant for people who know about mortal Kombat... I thought it was entertaining but confusing.

that was actually a nice web series. The gun play and future style weapons are a nice touch. Just waiting for Jax's arm and leg and Kanos face.
