EA and FUNimation Entertainment, the leading distributor of Japanese animation, have announced today they're working with T.O. Entertainment to produce a Mass Effect anime feature film. The film will be based in the Mass Effect universe, and, "will tell the tale of an epic science fiction adventure set in a vast universe filled with dangerous alien life and mysterious, uncharted planets," according to EA.
Casey Hudson, executive producer of the Mass Effect series at BioWare will also be the executive producer on the film, so we trust that it's in very capable hands. "Over the last few years, we have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media," Hudson said. "Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us.”
Production on the film has already begun and it's currently scheduled for a 2012 release.

This is exciting! I hope they remain true to the canon.

I Love Anime, Good Anime. They're isn't many great new anime in the past 2-4 years but if you think a CGI film would be better, it'll probably go to a Anime/Japanese Studio so it'll defeat the purpose (actually it might be both like Iron man). I liked the Dante's Inferno film (done like Gotham Knight and Animatrix) so if it's done by the right people Great.

EA, I hoped you learned your lesson from Dead Space...

Reading the headline I was not happy. I thought they were saying ME1 was going to become an Anime movie (since a ME1 Movie has been confirmed in talks by the Doctors at BioWare).
But as long as it's not the story of Shepard, sure go ahead, do an Anime. It can't be as bad as I feel the comics are. (They are just too short and too jumpy for me to like)

Normally I would think this was silly, but the melodrama of Mass Effect seems to fit much better than, say, Halo. Didn't really like the Halo one, something about the Chief posing like a samurai didn't sit well with me. Just hope they don't add a race of creepy humanoids with cat ears.

Even in the capable hands they have it in, any game-to-film that I have seen has been: "great concept, piss-poor execution". I really am holding out for this though. I want it to be good, but gamers have seen too many terrible renditions of their favorite games throughout the years. Doom, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Hitman, etc..they've all been horrible or very sub-standard compared with the series they come from. Maybe having someone from the Mass Effect series will play a key role in whether or not this will be worth buying/watching or if it stays on the shelf.

I hope they make it a CGI film and not a cartoon although I'd rather have live action then both of those I'm pretty sure thats no going to happen.

I haven't watched an anime since I was a kid(aside from the always awesome Ninja Scroll) but my love for Mass Effect might change that.

There is a mix judgments on the anime projects: Halo Legends, Animatrix, and Batman Gotham Knight. However, I enjoyed them all and I find that each varied in quality and contribution to the material respectfully. One shouldn't judge a Mass Effect anime based on any missteps done by the aforementioned animes. It's a different company, a different IP, and a different project all together. To judge it because one didn't like previous video game animes is like saying I didn't like the motion capture of Polar Express so obviously the motion cap of any subsequent movie will be crap too. Producers and developers consider its predecessors and account for perceptions of the audience. Don't assume that Bioware will make the same mistakes, not to say they absolutely won't. However, it is very compelling when a video game developer does a better job at story telling of the Star Wars universe than the creators at Lucasarts

I think it will go pretty well. The only reason why Halo Legends wasn't so good was because it wasn't made by Bungie. This is being made by Bioware and not some company who will ruin the story. Cam't wait to see it!

Hope the animation is good and the story interesting, as well as the characters, since Mass Effect is all about the unique characters. If this wont turn into the stupid, flirty idiocy that is anime today, then I will consider watching it.
Back in the day, anime was good and there were a lot of unique series, but these days, they are just plain stupid rehashes of each other all the same.

the devil may cry anime was beast if its like that ill watch it

Why don't they just make an awesome CGI movie like Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
MajorMadness44
The Best Game is now becoming the best movie.......How awesome is that..

I'd have been much happier about this information if their animation partner had been someone the likes of Production I.G., Madhouse, Gainax, or similar. I'm not familiar with T.O. pedigree.
And I agree also that the Halo anime was garbage--weird art direction/animation with a weak/forgettable story (odd considering how much money MS has to throw at it; a top shelf anime series in Japan only costs about 10-15 million to make; less than what they pay some Jr. VP at MS).
