EA is about to spend over $100 million on a Battlefield 3 marketing campaign to try and change the mindset regarding when gamers think about modern warfare games, Call of Duty is the first franchise that comes to mind. At the recent Ad Age Conference in New York, EA head John Riccitiello, said that Battlefield 3, "is designed to take down [Modern Warfare 3]. There will be a couple hundred million dollars of marketing going against these two products going head-to-head."
Them's fightin' words! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 hasn't even been announced yet, but if the two arguably best FPS franchises are going to be competiting so heavily against one another, then there's a good chance that FPS fans are going to be getting their hands on two very good games come this fall. Other triple A games that have had huge marketing campaigns include Homefront, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and of course, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

you can spend as much money as you want on advertising, but if the game sucks, you will look like a fool for not spending that money on the actual game. i hope that isn't the case.

@fuji-phoenix - Since like... Call of Duty Modern Warfare if not before that. I mean if you want you could throw Halo's name in there but it's really not.
@EKG - Of course it will be online pass enabled, it's an EA Game. And how exactly does Online Pass encourage piracy? Do you know of some magic tool that allows you to connect to an EA Server without the Online Pass? Do you really want to be making jokes eluding to you partaking in Piracy with Sony currently trying to crucify GeoHot?
And after my disappointment with Homefront (short short short SP Storyline although potent and frustrating MP both on technical aspects and the MP itself) I'm a little excited for BF3. I've never played the other ones so who knows. With EA's Bankroll it should be good.
My biggest problem is that just like every other Shooter in the world it will have Explosives. Which means I will constantly be killed by random grenades, C4 traps, n00b tubes and the like. I don't understand why FPS makers are afraid to make a FPS without cheap explosives.

since the fiasco at Infinity Ward I think it's doubtful that Modern Warfare 3 will be awesome =(
Anyway, this is looking very promising. I've liked the previous entries in the series very very much.

Millions of dollars in marketing means ... TV. In prime time.

Now hold on a minute! Since when is Call of Duty one of the best FPS franchises?

It looks good, I just hope it is different from Call of Duty. If the campaign in particular is linear, super focuses, super scripted game then I am not even going to give it a second look. If, howeverm it is more open and encourages experimentation like Crysis 2...Well then, we would have a day one purchase.
The multiplayer is going to be great regardless so I am not worried about that. I will rent it just for the multiplayer (unless there is some kind of Online Pass, then I will have to get the game through...uhum...other means).
Scams like the Online Pass encourage Piracy!
