EA is about to spend over $100 million on a Battlefield 3 marketing campaign to try and change the mindset regarding when gamers think about modern warfare games, Call of Duty is the first franchise that comes to mind. At the recent Ad Age Conference in New York, EA head John Riccitiello, said that Battlefield 3, "is designed to take down [Modern Warfare 3]. There will be a couple hundred million dollars of marketing going against these two products going head-to-head."
Them's fightin' words! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 hasn't even been announced yet, but if the two arguably best FPS franchises are going to be competiting so heavily against one another, then there's a good chance that FPS fans are going to be getting their hands on two very good games come this fall. Other triple A games that have had huge marketing campaigns include Homefront, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and of course, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Sadly I think this is what the franchise needs, just better advertising at this time because the game's going to be epic, the main goal at the moment (outside of making the game itself) should be promoting the game so that casual gamers see the game and purchase it like so many do on a whim with the COD franchise.
I'm all for spending that money on the game but if something as awful as Homefront can sway people's minds with good advertising then something that's actually good should do amazingly well.
Great advertising can make or break a game's net profit even if it gets a mediocre rating.

I can see why there spending so much on this game. Most people who love Battlefield are people who played Battlefield 2 and 2142 on the PC. And if we go by the general stereotype of non hardcore gamers playing MW2 are people who were only 5-8 or have only played games on a console. All it takes if one of there buddies who goes to G4 or IGN to say " COD MW3 is coming out in X" (X= Month of MW3's release) and they are sold.

Modern Warfare 3 has to be amazing to keep people from leaving the franchise. The average gamer (who doesn't really visit G4 or IGN, for example) might still buy MW3 just because of brand recognition, but I don't see a lot of more core gamers hanging around if MW3 isn't very good. Like I said before, if Battlefield 3 is just as good as Bad Company 2 and you add these new awesome visuals, this game is going to be awesome.

it will be awesome if battlefield 3 can take call of duty off the throne ............well im pretty sure I speak for everyone when I say we all think BFBC2 was better than MW2 and black ops but it needs to be official sells wise and EA wont milk the series to death by putting out a new one every year and if the rumors about the next MW being pay to play battlefield will certainly crap on call of duty because how many people are here are willing to pay per month to play the same game that MW2 is ? next headline "call of duty worst sell in the series is this the fall of COD? " haha cant wait to see that on the headlines
MasterOfWeed
Yeah they're learning from BC2 because BC2 was really under advertised compared to MW2 and that's probably why it wasn't super popular even though it was a great game.

They didn't need to spend a dine in marketing to get me to buy it. I also kinda wish some of that money could be put into more features for the game, but the that's the nature of the business I guess.
KillerStefan
They should invest that money into the game itself other then wasting it on a marketing campaign.
Nothing wrong with marketing, but that's just outrageous.
jma1024
@fuji since it is the number one selling franchise kinda means its the best
Wozman23
I won't be playing either game, but I'll be rooting for the underdog.

@TheBRADLeyB - Put aside your worries as far as explosives are concerned. If BF3 follows the same model as the last few Battlefield games, they're going to do a great job balancing them. Grenade kills are still going to happen, but the 40mm GL actually takes a bit of skill to use - its hardly a "noob tube". Besides, people tend to save their explosives for destroying vehicles and buildings anyways.
If you've never played any of the other games, it's still not too late to give Bad Company 2 a chance, either. It's an awesome game, but takes some adjustment if you're used to more "accessible" shooters like CoD.

come on even though i love FPS games isnt calling them the best fps games like saying the smartest retard? theyve just gotten so popular because its what kids think is "cool" to play.
Tpurch05
I like how pp dis on COD when they sit there and play it all day. They just suck and they no it. But im looking forward to both games. Im a fan of both.
quaddrag440
Battlefield series blows COD outa the F$#ing water, COD died with the release of MW2...period

Im getting Both BF3 And MW3 if they are actually planning to release it iwth all this competeitition .(Though see all this competition, MW3 Will have to bring so much big of an overhaul that it can entice People with Work and school to play for Hours on in, ). Im also getting SKyrim, mE3, ac3, And possibly a Max payne 3. SO i have alot of gaming.
For those of You that like to Bag on COD saying its a BAD GAME. Please. COD is easilly one of the best franchises and games of all time.
Though as seeing as their going for such of a big marketing campaign , Im not just guessing anymore that this multiplayer is going ot be amazing.......As looking at how so many people who arnt traditional Gamers are buying shooters like battlefield and COD for the multiplayer.

Well if we are seeing producers spending this much money just on marketing that means one of two things. The game really really blows. Or the game is really bad ass and like this article states competing against one another. Battlefield 3 all the way. Whats Call of duty???
JustTheBeginning
Game probably cost less than 50 million, yet spend 100 on advertising... nice. Cant blame them though, if it means the demise of CoD I am all for it.
bradleyquist
Hmmm....maybe they should use that $100 million and put it into the game. Seems like a game is better when you make it better and not when you just say it is.
