EA is about to spend over $100 million on a Battlefield 3 marketing campaign to try and change the mindset regarding when gamers think about modern warfare games, Call of Duty is the first franchise that comes to mind. At the recent Ad Age Conference in New York, EA head John Riccitiello, said that Battlefield 3, "is designed to take down [Modern Warfare 3]. There will be a couple hundred million dollars of marketing going against these two products going head-to-head."
Them's fightin' words! Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 hasn't even been announced yet, but if the two arguably best FPS franchises are going to be competiting so heavily against one another, then there's a good chance that FPS fans are going to be getting their hands on two very good games come this fall. Other triple A games that have had huge marketing campaigns include Homefront, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, and of course, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Its 2011, Any FPS should have at least 50 maps at launch!! That what they need to spend their $100 million dollars on, I should be able to play the game for days without remembering where the hiding spots are. I know its about money but still in a real life battle situation your not going to know ever single detail of the map!! It would be revolutionary to Battlefield 3 with so many maps you have to play it 2 days or for you to make your own maps

Just reserved this earlier this week, to say I can't wait for this to come out is an understatement. I can already guess on where the first TV ads for this start to pop up. I give it about 1-2 weeks into the NBA playoffs, or during a game of sunday night baseball on ESPN, and more than likely an extended ad for it will pop up. Calling it now.

Why do people slam COD so much? Is it because they're not good at it??
I will most likely be buying both and enjoying both. I like both franchises..

hmmm... now let me C wich of these 2 games will i get? aha ill get both of them and if the other games sux then down the sewers you go and i think y'all know wich ones going down the trash haha....

It's so obvious battlefield 3 is going to be the best shooter, battlefield is great and cod is a cartoon shooter at best.
MrNicEgUy76
some of you are talking about destroying the cod franchise completely but i don't know if i would want a demise to cod but at least a top flight game which will draw people away from the cookie cutter yearly releases, if BF3 takes a serious claim to the military FPS genre then hopefully it will make Activision take a step back and realize they need to work on the quality and longevity of their titles. Good competition always breeds higher quality at a cheaper cost.

Ya, IW lost their leadership and COD MP has been pretty stale. If BF 2142 came to consoles we might not even be talking about COD the way we do, that game is flat out incredible. I won't be buying both, I'll be going with BF3 all the way.

Man, here we are discussing how a video game company is spending a substantial amount of money on marketing. I wonder what $100 M could do in Africa. (Although I do agree, it is what needs to be done when competing with Cod) Sometimes I wonder...

All you haters.......i say this
COD IS The modern day Unreal tournament for Console gamers..as for PC itsa FRAG FEST COD 4 with its 64 players indeed.
Battlefield is literally a..tactics and team play maelstrom. a game that can give you a feeling of epicness wander lust as you take the field one step at a time. or it can be a brutal scathing experience making you feel like your cowering behind cover while your brutally being attacked from all sides.
and yes i love battlefield for what epic fun it is...but after a few to many beers, il be playing COD for its simplified fun.
as for spending 100m......well why not.

I disagree with a lot of you. I don't want Battlefield 3 to kill CoD. 'Cause then they're just gonna come and ruin our game. Let it stay "#1" And we'll all sit back and enjoy BF3 and watch as CoD continues to be a F#cking laughing stock.

What really intrigues me most about this game is EA and Dice's confidence. They've clearly demonstrated the power of the Frostbite 2 engine and now with such an outlandish marketing campaign it seems as though they feel the game is a force to be reckoned with. I'm still a little nervous that they would be focusing on trying to joust CoD from its position.

@jackmoss: What are you talking about? Are you implying that Bad Company 1 and 2 were bad? I ve played every battlefield game to date and logged hundreds of hours on every one, however my favorite one by far is BC2! Are you implying that the battlefield community would be better off without the Bad Company line? If so, than Battlefield 3 would not look like it does now. The Bad Company games were a springboard for Frostbite and ultimately Battlefield 3 and if DICE had not spent years on their development than Battlefield 3 would not look like it does now at all.
@xFlamexOfxHellX: I would like to see a character customization screen like the one in Black Ops, where you can see how your character changes with the different equipment you use.
@ JohnJRambo47: amen!
@ jma1024: The games sales have nothing to do with the quality of the game. Black Ops for example was a huge step down for CoD and a HUGE disappointment for many of my CoD playing friends,(I have actually converted many of my friends to Battlefield because of how terrible Black Ops was.) yet it is one of the best selling games of the year mostly because of the huge percentage of kids who beg their moms to buy it for them.
I don't think that EA should spend $100 Million on ADVERTISING! I think they should use that money in the game itself. We all had things that we didn't like about every Battlefield game; that money could easily be used to fix those inevitable problems. I believe that EA should spend the bare minimum on advertising so that Battlefield doesn't turn into Call of Duty with thousands of kids screaming at the top of their shrill little voices with their microphones in their mouths. I would rather have them play CoD and not soil the Battlefield games.

I miss CoD4 but BC2 keeps me coming back again and again still. The battlefield series from 1942 have just been more dynamic creating a more fun environment which somewhat lacks the repetition that CoD suffers from.

ok i have read most of the comments here and for someone that been keeping a eye on bf3 i can say that i most likey going to be a good game but all of you saying why dont they send the 100mill on the game they probly did its been in the work for 2 1/2 year and they have to pay for the R/D for the new engien they built for the game COD the next one is not build a new engien (its ture look it up)and another thing adverting is not cheap and to be runnimg a ad campain for 6 mounth around the world its going to cost a lot. and for the rest of you say if its so good why not let word of mouth bring in the sales 1. thats takes to long 2.it gets your game out to people that might not have played a Bf game before and 3. its to get a lot of the xbox and ps3 gamers a way for cod cuz we all know this game need no ads for the pc but pc gameing is not as big any more and if you want to make 400mill on the first day like COD does your going to need to send big
JohnJRambo47
I hope it works and I hope the game trailers they've been posting stay true to the actually game play and not just a couple of glorified sections in the game they're trying to display. After COD stabbed most us in the back with Black Ops with a drop in quality from MW2, I'm am definitely ready.

A hundred million dollars - Do you actually believe that ? Companies that hype their products by lying about their costs rarely survive in the end. This is nothing more than a "Sucker Punch " from good old EA .
When it comes income tax time on this game, I suspect you will see that the true cost for total advertising is listed on the return at about six to eight million dollars. Thats about the average advertising costs for most great games like Call of Duty , Uncharted , etc.
If it's so good EA , then why would you ever contemplate spending a single penny more on advertising, when word of mouth alone will put sells to the max.
As a company, you only spend those kind of dollars, when you know your product is a true turkey.
"A Hundred Million Dollars" - best laugh I've had in a long time !

I'm going to wait and see how Battlefield 3 multiplayer customization looks like, cause if it looks like the other DICE games then I'll be sticking with the "imaginary" Modern Warfare 3 coming later this year (maybe).
Don't get me wrong but Battlefield 3 looks incredible, but if their main focus is taking down Call Of Duty then they need to fix their multiplayer classes.
jackmoss
You're not a fan of Battlefield games unless you've played one prior to Bad Company 1.

Just cause it's the number one selling doesnt necessarily mean it is the best. Ever since CoD 4 was released it was viewed as an awesome game and marketed well. A lot of people buy the game cause the brand has become a trend. It's like Halo, it became a trend. When someone who doesnt play a lot of games goes to a game story they know people are always talking about CoD and Halo, so what do they do? They assume it's a great game and they buy it. Not saying they both aren't great games but thats just how things become. Battlefield has always been a great series but not really marketed like other games. My favorite CoD was Modern Warfare, I've played all of them since, but they werent better than MW they were just slightly different in their own way. There isn't much evolving in the CoD online experience and I think that will be the inevitable reason for the death of CoD in the future. Compared to most other shooters I'd almost refer to CoD as the Street Fighter of FPS'. doesnt change much from generation and it's like an arcade. I honestly don't even think you can compare CoD to Battlefield. Both are built of different principles of gameplay. Battlefield strives for a more realistic battle time of gameplay and CoD is more arcade/deathmatch. Basically it comes down to what people like and what they want to play. I would say I'd like people to play Battlefield more but I don't want some of the people who only play CoD style with their shooters(going for kills rather than teamwork). Battlefield takes quite a bit of teamwork to win and do good in matches. For me, it gives me a longer lasting enjoyable experience because it forces me to try and apply myself in a match.
